Love this approach of chopping up whats around and smashing it back together the way you need it. Changed the way I see the world, literally.

First class work.I am 84 and have been modelmaking for 76 years. I am old school and aprecciate something that has been scratch built/converted far more than the overpriced characterless ready made rolling stock which the majority of stuff I see at model shows consists of. I miss the wonderful conversion article which made the old5 60/70s airfix magazine such a treasure trove of imaginative articles and information. Thank you. More please.

That’s such an honour to hear! I’ve described my approach as “ultra analogue” before - no DCC, all old models, old techniques. I’m chuffed to hear this has resonated with the modellers who I’m emulating!

Great video, great to Australian content, and really great to see how you have made some of your rolling stock for your layout.

The nails as buffers is a very clever idea indeed, especially since most RTR coaches don't have spring buffers anyway. Painted up or regular, you can't tell. Awesome job my man, hats off!

Excellent ! Love the custom buffers

X-Acto sell a neat handle which fits the razor saw, making it easier to use. The handle has a collet arrangement to tighten over the tang. The Hornby coaches are sat on a guards van chassis, and the wheels at the end has always looked wrong. Anyhow your build is genius, going to be doing my own. Don't forget Lego blocks are perfectly square or straight to fit inside kitbashed models, the ABS will bond to styrene with the usual solvents.

A good DIY tutorial, as these original Hornby coaches can be found in abundance and relative cheap and a good base to start from. It helps you to enjoy doing great modeling on a low budget, noting wrong with that, it even can make you prouder to have one of these, than instead ready of the shelf. There are some things I would have done different, but for people who got no access to 3D printing, this is the way to go. And hearing the accent you must live in Australia or New Zealand and having British rolling stock send over must cost you an arm and a leg, so a very good alternative. Defiantly one of the videos to store in the favorite list.

What a cool project! I have lowered two of these coaches too, but nearly as good did too.

Love this, top bashing and very smart modelling!

Absolutely fantastic, youve totally transformed the cheap and nasty hornby 4 wheeler into something considerably more believable. Genius use of nails too. Love seeing such scratchbuilds, kitbashes and transformations of older stock. Great job well done!

THey certainly look the part, sorted the aesthetic issues with the coaches quite nicely

Great video I did something similar converting two of them into an Irish six wheel coach. These models have geat kitbash conversion potential.

Fun fact these old 4 wheelers basically are a cut and shut of the triang clerestorys on a brake van chassis which the prototypes were exactly that

Very nice! Love the use of nails for both buffers and vents. All this kit bashing/scratch building is getting me keen to give it a go on my next FreemOO9 module. I enjoyed the longer form content. Keen to see more projects you have in the future! Ps. I enjoyed the subtle Castle reference @32:59 "It's the Vibe and Uhhh, nope that's it. It's the Vibe."

I'll shine up my Australian card, on the knowledge that you thought I was referencing Australiana :P. 'Vibe' is the most common word I use at work, it just carries into the rest of my life! When I (finally...) get onto my Freem009 module, I'll absolutely be doing some mini-bodges :D. Hopefully it's not too finnicky

I run Hornby Dublo 3rail, but like these little coaches, have put four of them onto HD gaurd's van chassis. Result.

Interesting... I've done similar in the past but mainly to produce grounded coach bodies. Incidentally it is just as easy to produce six wheelers this way. One small point though, 10 thou is a quarter of a milimetre, not a half.
