Yep, I was one of those who left it too late! (damn!) Looking forward to re-motoring an old Hornby Coronation Scot, she runs OK but a bit notchy... about 40 years ago, I used to have an HST just like that (and the centre coach had lighting too!), sadly - like so many childhood trainsets, it was sold off by my mum when I left home, er, 30 years ago. Recently scanning a certain auction site, seems there weren't that many around with lighting? I did find a few with the "plunger" pickups like mine had, but not as many as I'd thought.

I think the patina on your model, the darker yellow and just the overall look is far superior to Charlie’s more modern unit. That’s exactly how I remember them looking when they were fairly new, rather than the lighter, more lemon yellow of Mr Bishop’s model. I’m sure you’ll go on to treasure it for many years to come.

Another fantastic video Charlie. As luck would have it, my dear dad bought me a Hornby class 43 HST in the early 80’s. Having seen your video, I’ve just looked in the loft and dusted off my old DC loco. I’ve got my order in with Mark’s ‘Horns & Whistles’ eBay shop and looking forward to attempting the heart transplant you have just demonstrated…..what could possibly go wrong!. At last an upgrade to some old Dc stock , being im not Dcc its a relief to see a person ( and i know your a Dcc fanatic ) like yourself taking time to do what you have just done and thats baught life back into our old locos , I have 2 Intercity 125s both from early Hornby and after constant cleaning and running are showing the signs you have just put forward in this video , Now rather than selling them on as used and abused im toying with the upgrade and at a fair price i can keep the old stuff rolling . never give up! unless it's the Bachmann > Mainline splut chassis locos, they need new chassis, all the hornby stuff is easy to dcc, just cut the wire and solder the chip in place 😉

I say that so you will better understand how much I LOVE England and everything about the Mother Country. Converted my R069 1979 HST last weekend, with CD motor, led directional lighting in both power and dummy upgraded to DCC & added TTS Valenta decoder. Runs sweet now and so much more responsive.

I know it's an old video so it's probably been pointed out in the previous 616 comments already; but Mark is correct in his clip description, they are "E" Clips, not Circlips. It's not an alternative name for the same clip, they are different clips altogether. I converted one of my Class 37's to a CD motor, goes like a rocket, I must get around to fitting a resistor some time. Love your videos, keep 'em coming👍

Crikey on the £360 plus price; its their choice just as it is ours as to whether or not to buy. So better and more fun to recycle is the name of the game, you are becoming a real green channel now! Great to see a replacement motor (shame Mark will not ship overseas) and nicely demonstrated thanks. FYI I have successfully dcc converted two Ringfields 40 year old variety ones. Another tip is if lacking starting torque to check and re magnetise - it's easy to do and I have recovered a number of my 50 year old childhood Triang Hornby locos. Thanks Stephen

Charlie, Thank you for a great video on the conversion/upgrading of the Hornby Class 43. I also think you have made an extremely valid point regarding the cost of products coming out of the Hornby stable. I cannot understand why models produced by Hornby from the 1980s command such high prices today. Equally since buying up many other European companies - including Lima - why these older less detailed models cost so much is lost on me. Does Hornby really expect us to believe that the cost of producing an ex-Lima Mk3A sleeper truly is £44.99 or an ex-Airfix Mk2D is £49.49! Given that the Accurascale new highly detailed Mk2B is priced at £49.96, Hornby's inflated prices are not justified. I know the Airfix coaches were ahead of their time, but a model from 1976 being priced roughly the same as the latest tooling technology 46 years later? Really! For a more direct comparison, look at the Hornby CDA triple pack: £84.99. Then take a look at the Accurascale CDA triple pack £62.46. This is a fair comparison as both toolings are new and model the same wagon. A signifcant price difference is also found with the MHA triple pack from both companies. Hornby - £72.99, Accurascale - £62.46. Given that Hornby is signifcantly larger than Accurascale, you would think they would be more competitive? In short, Hornby is killing the hobby with these prices. I would like to see more videos of detailing or upgrading older models. It would really bring back the 'modelling' in railway modelling. Keep up the good work.

Thanks to you and 00Bill I have brought a couple of OLD spares and repair 060's and a almost unused 1976 Dutchess of Sutherland. One of the 060's was a Lima GWR Pannier and I fitted a CD motor from Strathpepper Junction and a TCS-T1P decoder which just fits into the tender. Even though the Dutchess had not been run, the magnet had lost a lot of its power and there I replaced it with a N52 Neo magnet from Bowelrscroft. If I want to fit a decoder to the Dutchess I only need to fit a small piece of kapton tape between the peg that electrially connects the two motor bodies. My journey into DCC via an Ardinuo is not progressing well as my poor old Range Rover P38 keeps getting in the way. Again thanks for your videos, watching them is almost more fun than 'playing' with the trains themselves.

Very nice "how to" Charlie. I've replaced a few old Ringfield motors with CD Drive motors which is what the one you got from Mark looks like. I 3D printed my own mount brackets but it's great that they are available as a kit like this for a reasonable price. I usually fit one of the tiny ESU DCC chips while the loco is in pieces as well. Quite easy for most locos. Cheers!

Hi Charlie, can I recommend that when using a soldering iron to shrink heat-shrink that you consider using the rightangle formed by the soldering iron tip and its retaining nut. This provides 2 surfaces for heat transfer and keeps the solder on the tip out of way. Phil, Geelong, Aus.

Good job, Charlie - another excellent video, thank you! Hope the thumbs have recovered, and looking forward to 'Part 2'. On the question of exorbitant pricing there is no doubt that at 3 or 400 quid a shot (and the same for goods wagons at £70 or more a pop) you need deep pockets to indulge yourself with them - and this is going to seriously limit the number of people who treat themselves to one. Consequently, it's unlikely they'll be selling tens of thousands of them. But then, look at the level of very fine detail, and the choice of liveries they're often made available in. Researching, tooling, finishing and assembly to that exceptional standard for relatively small batches of product isn't going to come cheap. So thank you to these manufacturers for their efforts, and good luck to those for whom that level of detail is essential and who are rich (or daft) enough to keep them in business. But in the same breath surely these companies are missing a trick here? I'd suggest for a significant number of model railway enthusiasts the level of detail you had on Steve's old '80's HST and comparably vintaged models is more than adequate - and if you could produce something similar to your top-end products but retailing at £40 or £50 a go there has to be a market that would be hungry for them. Sadly, I'd suggest the absence of 'budget' product is harmful in the long run to the hobby: how many people are put off starting or returning to the hobby when they see product at this level of pricing? Railway modelling is an amazing hobby that offers so many opportunities to while away the time, and it's great to see refurbishment of old stock being highlighted here as one of them. Getting an old loco to run again can be very rewarding, even if the end result doesn't meet the exacting standards of our 'finescale' colleagues! So maybe more videos like this one would do something to let people know you don't need to be related to Croesus, or have the mechanical skills of a Swiss watchmaker to feel proud of what you can achieve. Keep up the good work!

I watched a video the other day (could find a link, if anyone's interested) which followed a US model company creating a model of a US diesel loco from scratch. I have to say, it was somewhat eye-opening, the extraordinary lengths they went to... IIRC it took around 12 months from design to the point where they were shipping the first units; each of which had over 100 individual parts on it. Obviously a product aimed at "serious" modellers, and not mere hobbyists or - let's be honest, most of us started this way - kids wanting to play with trainsets. I'm just getting into the "modelling" aspect of model trains (rather than the big kid playing with toy trains....) but scouring eBay for used loco bargains, it does strike me that maybe Triang had it right when they didn't try to accurately model specific locos, rather they created something "a bit like what might have been used" & built it tough enough to survive an 8-year-old's play. Perhaps that's what's missing from the market right now? Speaking of exhorbitant pricing.... I'm looking to model the immediate pre-war LMS, and most of Hornby's rather limited range of suitable coaches are all around £60 each! Think I'll stick with converting old tinplate coaches instead...

Don't forget to change the tyres while you're there with the wheels off. I just did a service on three such HSTs (not this new motor, but servicing the original with a cleanup and new brushes and springs). The decades-old rubber on the wheels came off in hard chunks. Replaced and runs much better. (Hattons, something like 12 quid, as I recall). Looking forward to learning about adding new red lights in the next video! Thanks, Charlie!

Not only did he change the engines but also gave each engine a service plus postage for I think a great price of £175(eat your heart out Hornby) I am a DC man and as you will have gathered It was around 1961 my trainspotting era makes up my model railway and I suggest to any of your members in the same boat as me get in touch with Mark. The performance of the engines is brilliant, I don't think I have had a A4 take off with a full load(intentionally ) as slow ever and the guagemaster controller has never been above 30. Definitely not. While we've got incredible models coming out now, some of the prices now are eye watering. There are lots of older locomotives that can be bought cheap and with a little work can be improved up to a good standard and you've had the fun of modelling along the way.

I wouldn't abandon the advise to just buy a new or more recent used loco. Depending on circumstances, that could be sage advise. There's those who'd cherish the chance to tear down & upgrade a unit, and those who can't or shouldn't. Since Steve asked, you're follow up was on point. And encouragement is one of your hallmarks. Consider, though, a mechanical novice who doesn't have an old unit. With the cost of new units increasing by the day, used units are rising too. It can easily be a money pit to buy an expensive old used unit to fix, ruin it , then buy a new one in frustration. The key is the individual's experience, confidence & willingness to accept the risk. So I feel both your initial and subsequent reactions have merit. PS - The innards of old locos are fascinating. I've never seen inside older UK power. Thanks for the trip inside.

Interesting diversion from your usual topics. I reckon you need a gear puller Charlie, and circlip pliers. 😁 'Now it must be the turn of the cogs.' 🤣 I use Labelle #108 too. Bought a bottle about 14 years ago. Still have enough to last another 100 years or so. Also the #106 grease with PTFE and Micro-Trains 231 (Kadee) Grease-em graphite powder which is great for knuckle couplers. It's much more fun to solder the wires before you put the heat shrink on and then desolder the wires. That's how I do it.

A very informative video and you gave an excellent conversion process for upgrading / replacing the old Hornby Ringfield motor assembly. The reassembled model looks and runs beautifully, much more responsive. Totally agree with you about modern Hornby, they're going to have to be careful as they are amongst those manufacturers that may price themselves out of business, maybe they need to reassess things and pull back production to the UK from China to save on shipping costs and the like.

I have fitted cd motors to all of my ringfield diesels, best thing I've ever done, it's given them a new lease of life. I am also considering buying more margate models deliberately to covert them rather than as you say buy new at great expense. Great video!!

Looking at the brand new versions of Locos and comparing them to the old - the level of detail is now so fantastic - look at the red lining and separate hold rails on the boiler of the P2 as an example of detail. To buy second hand older versions on eBay really depends on one's acceptance of reality to 'bodged' or almost right and possibly passable in the dark. But for this one must be prepared to pay the price. One is fortunate not to be in the recording industry where a good microphone can be £2 - 3 thousand - and more! Same applies to Cameras and Lenses in Photography!

I bought 2, second hand and I am in the middle of doing a video showing the replacement motor on the 6233 Duchess of Sutherland that I think came on the market in the late 1970s and converting to DCC. My other duchess is 6234 Duchess of Abercorn is newer, being a 1980s model and I am converting that one as well. The reason for the video is that although the 1970s Ringfield motor looked the same as others, some lugs were different and it only had a red wire to the motor. I am not as chirpy as Charlie nor that good at videos, Just look at some of the 40 I have produced and you will see for yourself. .......... Barry

I got a motor out of an old cd player or vcr marked 12v and it fitted inside the hornby motor block the same as this although i removed the brass bearing i recall. I bought a hornby class 91 in gner livery on ebay for pennies as it was rough and didnt run., It now runs silky smooth although mine wll do a scale speed of over 500mph as well as a slow crawl. It pulls a full 9 coach rake easy by adding weights into the chassis to aid traction. Id say its one of the most fun trains to drive on my garden track where you can get speed up instantly in between the corners. Really i need to slow it down with some resistors. Great vid Charlie as always. I would recommend this type of conversion to anyone with old hornby or lima locos. Lots of kits on ebay or find a motor and order the little cogs to fit. Add some lights, a decoder and save 300 quid. Hornby are others are just being silly nowadays with price.

Another great video, Charlie. It’s a shame it didn’t come a couple of weeks ago. I’ve just added DCC sound to my class 31 with 3-pole Ringfield. I wish I’d known about these replacement motors at the time. The Hornby class 31 IMHO is a horrible piece of engineering so I won’t be opening it up again in a hurry. Keep up the good work. I always suspected the ringfield motor to be the issue with high voltage and current demands to start it causing issues with the back emf reading on the dcc chip.. Motor has come and fitted.. new motor spindel seemed to short to fit as you described. Had to cut some metal away but still fitted very well.. as a update regarding the ddc decoder, this now runs soooo much better now... Prompted by your video, I went one step further. I have put the latest HST bogies (regauged to EM) and drive motor into an old 1980s chassis and will be adding DCC sound and separate white and red lights. Total cost £150 including buying a 1980s HST as the victim. Much better than £369, and that's without sound...! And that's before I sell on the old bogies and ringfield motor..! Hi Charlie, first time I’ve commented. Heat shrink is the most useful stuff, but behaves so much better with a mini heat gun. I have this one from Hobby Craft, but near identical tools are available from around £10 from Amazon. Shop if around local craft stores might be even cheaper- when I got mine it was £15 for a black one “man tool”, but only £10 for an identical blue or pink version “for embossing and crafting”😁 Trust me on this, it is so good to use. You’ll end up using heat shrink far more often: it’s so much neater.

It always went fairly well but I guess time caught up with it and it sort of died despite my best efforts to disassemble and clean her 🙄 I saw a fella using a CD motor on a video some time ago but he was using a hot glue gun etc, so this kit looks perfect 🤩 I suspect he has a veritable production line running now. Evening Charlie, Thankyou for this video. I have 3 sets which date back to the very early 80s. Still run well but need to be updated. Slowly getting all the parts together to “upgrade” to better 12v motor and directional lights, with possible option of dcc and TTS sound. I’m gonna go for fitting an 8 pin plug socket that way can keep DC or DCC. When ready for sound and upgraded speakers can hopefully just swap out the chip. All is an adventure. Best part was taking the ring field motor apart and servicing putting back together and then running. Seeing the improvement of a model that that old! Or young again. Can’t wait for the next instalment in 2 long weeks. All best marc

Charlie, A friend of mine also has converted locs with this pickup arrangement: front truck left side and rear truck right side. Or the other way around. This DCC conversion worked fine until he tried to drive from one booster district to another. In this case, momentarily on the booster separation gap, the loc takes its “left power” from one booster and “right power” from the other booster. This resulted in a stall from the loc. He had to place additional pickups on the wheels without pickups and on both trucks to eliminate this problem. I hope this information is helpful. Regards, Jelle

@@ChadwickModelRailway Hello Charlie, Using a Stay Alive is an interesting idea. We did not try that. I can’t picture exactly what will happen electronically though. Our locomotives were old brass Overland USA locos. Placing additional pickups in the steam locomotive proofed to be too difficult and time consuming. It found its way back in the display case I believe. In the diesel locomotive (same brand), adding extra pickups in the trucks was relatively straightforward. That said, USA locos generally speaking do not have traction tyres. Pickups on wheels with traction tyres does not seem to be that effective to me. So, if you decide to try a stay alive when you encounter the same problem I look forward to your findings. Regards, Jelle

Good afternoon Charlie... I have just fitted one of the slimline, 9.5MM?, to an A3 Bittern, tender fitted. Also at the same time converted to Dcc. lucky there is space at the back of the tender to fit a protective plate to put the decoder on.. works well, the only thing with the slimline motor is its 6volts.. but obviously just set the CVs to top out the top voltage.. anyway enjoyed the vid.. still not got my shed built but am converting a loco a day :) cheers..
