Enjoyed "Doon the Lum"? As in the benediction , "Lang may your Lum Reek". ( May your chimney continue to smoke ie stay healthy and hearty) Also "shoogled" shaking, swaying or unstable. Happy Burns Night tomorrow!

thanks to this video I was able to see how to remove the body from the chassis, was very confused about the pipes up until now. The one I got has clearly never seen a running life because it's so clean inside, so I wanted to get her greased up at least so she's ready when my tracks arrive

I wonder if the owner has code 83 track. Those older Hornby flanges are pretty deep.

My new favourite Scottish word - skoosh. I'm trying to use it whenever I can from now on 🙂

I too am expanding my vocabulary…along with “skoosh”, I now have a “mankey brush” on my workbench and am always on the look out for any “jiggery-faffery” in my rolling stock. Love ya, Bill!

I had a similar one, purchased for a tenner, a friend got it running after sorting the motor and a full lube, looks great

I replaced the entire underframe (motor/wheels/coupling rods/frames) by my own scratchbuilding in order to convert one to EM. The balancing/springing of the rear truck took a very long time to sort out and an 0-4-2 arrangement is a really difficult one to get right, especially with a light plastic body.

Great repair video. As far as I'm aware all the 14XX bodies fit the same way. All mine run well. I have kept the traction tyres. They are great with the autocoaches. Cheers Paul.

Great work Bill. I've had a few Hornby 14xx models over the years and the ones with Type 7 motors always have a noticeable motor/gear noise as they run, even in new or serviced shape.

Lovely little runner, Bill. Seems to be quieter now you've serviced it. Did it need remagnetising?

Lost count of the wheel and motor conversions to the 14xx that I've done. No two models sound alike, they all have their quirks and sounds! Definitely better for replacing the wheels and motor...the type 7 motor is prone to over-heating which is why I fit 5-pole motors. The rear axle spring is another potential area of trouble and a washer could be used to avoid axle wear and height reduction.

The similarity with the Airfix 14XX and the Hornby 14XX may be as a result of Hornby acquiring Airfix at some point. I have a couple of Airfix 'Praries' and they have the plastic insulation to protect the pickups from the chassis as you found in the 14XX. Thank you Bill for yet another informatie and entertaining video.

I first encountered those insulation strips on an Airfix Prairie. Fiendishly difficult to get everything lined up on reassembly!

They're similar because, as you suspect, they're effectively the same model (Though Hornby did simplify the drive mechanism). Airfix introduced it in 1978, but when they went broke in 1981 they sold their Ready to Run tooling to Palitoy. Palitoy then integrated everything into their Mainline line. When General Mills decided to exit toys and wind up Palitoy in 1985, the former Airfix tooling was sold to Dapol. Dapol then sold the tooling to Hornby in 1996. A surprising amount of the Airfix models are still made brand-new today. Hornby's (full price!) Mk2d-f are Airfix's 1976/77 range ones, as is the Lowmac most recently used for the Coke Bottle.

@@PeterJewell2 I totally agree - very fiddly!!! I've been trying to get hold of replacement sanding tubes for the Prairies but no one seems to stock them - I was wondering if they were available for the 14XX - it looks as if they are the same.

@@dfishpool7052 - I have two Airfix 61xx's sitting on my bench just now, and neither have any pipes from the sand boxes - didn't even realise they were missing! Wouldn't a short piece of brass wire do the trick?

@@PeterJewell2 Probably but I just wanted to buy replacements an push them into place but since they don't seem to be available I weill take up your suggestion - thanks.

I've owned around 20 of these, and they all have the same noise as this one, which is normal.

To me, it sounded quite thumpy over track joints. Maybe that was the noise?

Really good video, thanks. Interesting there's no traction tyres on that one, wonder how that was accomplished? Strikes me that it would be a great mod for those of us with small layouts. Anyway, thanks again, great channel, keep it up!

deeper flanged wheels running on finer scaled track cause a drumming noise as the flanges run on the rail chairs.

Need to swap the wheels on mine as mine has a set of traction tyres but you can't get them anymore. Anyone know where I can get a set from? My 14xx is part of the Titfield Thunderbolt set.
