Not all of us want 3 link chain couplings on 00 scale models, re the dodgy coupling, I would simply unclip the hook from the coupling bar, and just check the fit, perhaps it just has not been put in place properly! I’m conflicted on that. On one hand, yes. Seeing a proper Class D or 264 model would be interesting. On the other hand, their existing renditions have become icons in their own right, despite their inaccuracies, ‘Smokey Joe’ in particular. Retooling them could only work if the existing models stay in the catalogue.

They will stay in the Railroad range if this happens. Hornby still have lots of prototypes in both ranges, LNER A1/3, A4, P2, HST, 31, 67, just to name a few.

This is the kind of model that Hornby should produce for the Railways range every time. They are traditionally the leading manufacturer of of British prototype model railways and there should be an expectation that a Hornby railways model is not an inexpensive model but a fairly priced high quality one. This will allow Hornby to be the leader in model railways as they were in the Dublo days.

Can't say that doesn't look amazing. Feel Hornby could pull a good trick here and do a railroad one. Keep the vastly improved tank without the seams but give a different chassis without the sprung buffers and less under frame detail. Lovely but you don't see it 90% of the time so would give better scope for some affordable rakes. Hats of for them going all in though. Tricky model to do with the amount of variation over the years but a very good effort.

Have you considered doing a video on what the ideal finish for a model is? I know it is subjective, but everyone seems to prefer a satin finish to the often more prototypical glossy finish. Maybe you could get the airbrush out and try applying various finishes to a model and compare the results.

Fair review Sam. H certainly has stepped up once again with this one. A faulty coupling is of course an unforgivable sloppy miss which is a pity. How does the green compare to BP's corporate colour standard. We were wondering if BP have exchanged the RAL or Pantone colour with H, as well as for the TT version as we can remember. The camera can obscure reality for us viewers of course but it seems that the green is missing a dab of blue part percentage comparing to pictures of BP. Anyway, a good well overall step up by H. (Get it Bachmann for your GBP 45 Presflo and your GBP 50 Dance Hall ?). To be petty as usual, I can say that Roco put kinematic couplings in their wagons of this size... For the axles, you have a tool by DCC Concepts, axle bearing reamer, you can use to solve the stiffness problem. I have one, it's an efficient and easy to use tool (ref. DCF-BR2).

I have to say that for what it is, its just too expensive. I could buy quite a few ALL METAL, easy to build wagon kits for such a cost. It's at least nice to see that Hornby improved their coupling hook tooling, including the little secondary hook at the top thats extremely hard to make at home without machine tools. I think it may be useful to run a test with a few printed wagons using: parallel bearings in plastic, plastic pinpoint bearings, Alan Gibson brass pinpoint bearings (they're lovely and cheap too), and unshielded ('open" type) ball bearings (which are amazingly free rolling), to see the difference that it can make, a bit like your test of locomotive bearings. Thanks as always Sam.
@johnd88922 ай бұрын
Rolling stock is meant to run on a layout. So if the couplings are poor and it has too much rolling resistance then all the detail, not very visible on a layout, is not very important other than to drive costs up. Lucky this is from a less interesting recent era that i find no attraction to modelling. What is going on at Hornby with the pot luck approach to free running rolling stock? So many new releases run poorly.

Partly true. In reality, one or two barrier wagons might be required, but only for trains hauled by steam locomotives, to minimise the risk of sparks from the chimney igniting the fuel vapour around the tanks. If the train were mixed goods, the tank wagons would be placed a distance behind the engine for the same effect. This wouldn't apply when trains were being shunted, as the risk of sparks was much smaller. Having said that, there are plenty pictures of steam-hauled oil tank trains without barrier wagons, so the regulations were probably more complicated. Diesel/electric locomotives no longer needed to use barrier wagons for oil trains because of sparks, but certain other traffics still required them. Barrier wagons were additional load that didn't generate revenue, so would have been avoided if at all possible. Another possibility, if the oil terminal prohibited locomotives from entering the sidings, 'reach' wagons would be used between loco and tanks to allow them to be pushed into place. It is possible that some photos of diesel-hauled trains include a reach wagon that would be indistinguishable from a barrier wagon. So, Sam's train here would not need barrier wagons, but I think it very unlikely that milk tanks would be in the same train as oil tanks!
