Hornby Holmes J83 - Simple improvements

Another simple makeover on a basic Hornby loco.....this time the J83 tank.

I do like the J83 and your weathering does look good. In a twist of fate, I bought an R3668 Hornby J83 from 2007-08 that was lightly factory 'weathered' from one of the Old Smokey sets. I then spent many hours with cotton buds and various non damaging chemicals removing the weathering to return it to it's original toy like appearance! That's train modelling for you 😄

It certainly is......mind you I am not a great fan of factory weathered products so probably would have done the same, Regards Keith

Gr8 Job - A lovely little Loco, this is how I love the Hobby from my pov - I was only ever gonna run GWR, (😁 famous last words 😜), but it’s infectious to say the least. My Teak Clerestory’s look amazing after a “few improvements”, and didn’t Cost a fortune - ‘AppyDays!😆

Super painting work KV, really improved the look of this loco. Agree with you about masking fluid, very useful but tricky to remove. I tried this method of masking yesterday and found it difficult to remove without scratching the paint underneath.

Gentle scraping with a blunt cocktail stick to get a piece big enough to pull away with your fingers sometimes works, it is tedious, but worth it in the end, Regards Keith

Looks very lovely, I like the J83 mostly because of the Hornby model, not too much of a fan of the strange shaped front cab spectacle plates and very empty cab but an X04 motor magnet would have sat there years ago

Hmm... all very well thought out. Maybe it could have done with adding a basic floor into the cab, with a bit of plasticard, but that's just me speculating.

I think you are right and it may be a job for the future but to be honest it doesn't notice when the loco is running on the layout, Regards Keith

All of the pre war trains came out of the foundry in gloss paint. Why mess a pretty model with muck and muddle. Alot of work for what.I don't know. Us boys and our chuff chuffs eh.
