I recently bought this vintage Lord of the Isles Achilles Dean at The London festival of railway modelling and have been thinking about how to review it on the channel. Last week Sam's trains published a great review of a recent Hornby Isle and it got me thinking, is it worth buying new?
Let's take a look into the model history and see if my purchase was any good.

Hi, great informative video, Hornby have been rehashing their locos etc for years, overpriced 40/50/60 year old mouldings, their Railroad range is very old Lima mouldings with limited details and no lighting, the HM7000 system looks ok, the Americans have been using a blue tooth system for a few years now, great video, thanks for sharing.

Lovely video. I have about 4 Triang locos with deep flanges that used to jump and stutter on points , but then I discovered that the wheels were out of gauge. I set them to 14.4 and they all run over the points without stopping or jumping. I do , however, use Peco points both insulated and electrofrog and not Hornby. Don’t know if that might be something to look at to see if it helps with the loco over the points. Looking forward to your next video.

Thanks for the advice, I will have a look at the gauge. My points are a mix of Hornby and peco, so could be either. Next time I have the track up I will take a look. Thank you so much for watching Matt

I purchased one new in the early 1970’s. I replaced the gear set with a steel/brass 60:1 Romford set, much improved slow running. I am now building a 5” gauge live steam version. In my view the most handsome loco ever.

That will be lovely in 5" and stunning in steam! I had my 5" speedy running for a while great fun. Any way thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

Also having worked at a firm dismantling trains, and supplying salvage parts. The LNER teaks had at least 4 coates of gloss yacht varnish which would yellow with time.

I had a triang version and new hornby verions of this. Lovely looking locos but could never pull more than 2-3 coaches, after that just a lot of wheel slip, so I got rid. I'd buy again but only if they could pull 3-5 coaches comfortably. Great video, subscribed

Thanks for subscribing and thanks for watching and your kind words, may be I need to do a pull test on reviews? I only had the two coached so could be interesting .

You did well to get that at £30! The latest loco has more pick-ups and a different motor so it will run quite a bit better than the older ones if that matters. I suspect many folks won't use the loco on a track very frequently so its running abilities won't matter too much. That Dean Single replica you mentioned is at Windsor station btw

Thanks for the info about the Dean single, I didn't realis its still there, If I recall it was part of a Tussauds exhibition many moons ago? Time for a trip back to Windsor. Anyway thanks for watching.

I really like these even though they are not correct to the original with a huge gap above the bogie and longer front section - some people go to great lengths to modify these too. The newer models have pickups on the bogie and a different chassis and motor. I actually prefer the older motor as it is serviceable, you can renew brushes etc., newer one is sealed and prone to burning out. Servicing with Labelle gear oil and ptfe grease they run very well. I use an H&M Clipper controller and can get a slow crawl out of both rhe Triang XT-60 and X-04 motors. Collecting these I look for perfect lining, stickers and those whistles on the cab rooftop (often broken off). Your example does have some damage on the cabside lining, gwr logo on the tender and tender corner as well as some patchiness in the gloss finish, but then you could add another 20GBP or more for a perfect one with instructions and better box. All of that is not at all important if you enjoy it and get it at a good price. Pulling power uphill is not fantastic of course without magnadhesion on nickel track, but on the flat it is fine. Make sure the rear wheel rotates freely - this is often a source of drag, as well as the tender wheels. The coaches are lightweight so if running freely, little resistance. Yours sounded dry on the first run, cleanout, service with a good synthetic lubricant and it will be much quieter and smoother. I have all the versions except the latest and no reason to get it, especially with our exchange rate! I live in Cusco, Peru, at 3300m, must be a contender for the highest altitude Triang, Hornby, Dublo and more collection 😊

Wow, am am still in disbelief that my videos are being watched all over the world! Yep I think you win for the highest altitude!! Thank you for the insight and the information, I do plan to overhaul mine at some point, but for £30 I was pretty happy. I have only become aware of the magnatraction or lack of this morning so thank you. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Matt

You were luckily to get it for the price boxed. I have Lorna Doone a limited edition which came without traction tyres. Thanks for sharing your bargain. Regards Paul.

The latest version has a much better lining and paint work. Plus it has a new chassis and modern motor. It still runs poorly and IMHO is not worth the current asking price. These engines always tended to dip nose down once steel track was stopped being used. It was the magnadesion that gave it its grip on the track.

I hadn't appreciated it was a new chassis, I thought just the motor. Interesting point about the track. Thanks for watching and commenting .

Another interesting video. The older model is definitely worth getting as the new version is way overpriced. Keep up the good work.

The Triang Remembered one is DCC ready. It’s basically the same as the 2006 one which I own. The level of detail is pretty much the same even though it’s a different loco in the same class
