A set of hornpipes for the ITM course I'm teaching. Played on Pilgrim tenor banjo and accompanied by me with Oakbridge Irish bouzouki. The dots and chords of this version are at muualla.net/Boy...
The latter two hornpipes are locally known as "Hornpipe I" and "Hornpipe II" and it took some research to find their proper names.
(I'm still bit undecided if I should record the melody or accompaniment first. Both seem strange somehow...)

Hornpipes played at the right speed and not to prove how fast you can do it. Well done

Nice hornpipes. I'm Irish but most of the well known hornpipes popular in Ireland are in fact English tunes - probably due to the sea-faring history of na Sasanaigh/the Sasanacs. Go raibh maith agat. /Thank you.

martini. also many irish fiddle reels are scottish.scotland being the home of fiddle reel music. the origins of these two tunes in ireland are obscure.they may have come from the repertoire of james hill a scottish fiddle player who lived in the north of england and composed a few horn pipes.

@@brucecollins4729 Yes indeed. Most reels played in Ireland are Scottish; Miss McCleod of Rassay etc. The reel known in Ireland as "The Bucks of Oranmore" is almost certainly a Scottish reel called "The Bucks of Aranmore".... 🎶 etc.

Thanks! The link to the sheet music for these is in the in the description. I haven't seen collections of tenor banjo tabs anywhere and they're a bit more laborious to produce than the notes. I guess as these trad tunes are always played in open position there really is only one way to fret a certain note, so not much advantage in tabs over notes. (if you can read it that is)

@@jamesbrophy7116 I also can't read notes fast enough to play by them, and have learned most of the tunes by ear, but it's good to be able to read them to check some details. The last tune seems to be a bit obscure, the hand-written sheet I have for that is titled "Hornpipe II" and "Where's the Wife" was the only suggestion of a name I found when trying to identify the tune. Apparently someone recorded it in the 1970s (thesession.org/tunes/10736)

I'm trying to replicate your sound. I bought myself the same banjo it's a step up from my sx banjo. I think you have a great way of playing. I have ripped some of your sets and listen to them in the car hope u don't mind. are you hooked up to a speaker. what strings do u use.
@NiiloSirola
@NiiloSirola 7 жыл бұрын
Much obliged! I'm not using amplification, I just stick a mic in front. My strings are D'Addario LE011 - LE018PB - LE026PB - LE036P, and I use a 0.73mm Dunlop plectrum. After that I guess it's down to the right hand technique - where and which angle you pick etc.. I tend to pick quite close to the bridge and slightly mute the strings over the bridge with my palm to stop them ringing all over the place. I'm self-learned and this seemed to work the best for me...
