"Barking up the wrong tree" comes from hunting with scent dogs, where the dog (or often many dogs) would follow the scent of some arboreal mammal such as a raccoon or squirrel to a tree the quarry had climbed and stay there at the base barking to alert the human where they were, but the quarry had gone up the tree and then crossed across the branches to another tree entirely, with the dog unaware that the tree the scent trail had led them to was not the tree the quarry was in anymore.

Actually, certain types of hunting hounds literally bark up trees to help locate and secure the prey. Sometimes those hounds get mistaken as to which tree the prey is in due to either chasing a cold scent trail or chasing after a different target that's not the desired prey. So, when someone says "you're barking up the wrong tree", it refers to chasing a false lead or making an incorrect assumption.

I think Josh may actually be correct regarding Flinch Free not affecting Strongarm Stance. From my own experience as a Lance user, I am confident in saying that Flinch Free does not really do much for you when blocking so you can still get screwed over by teammates. And I guess that if Flinch Free doesn't work while you're blocking, it probably doesn't work on counters either. Which is... honestly pretty absurd the more I think about it.

To Cotton, yeah it does activate the counter even with flinch free. I use Lance and most of its counters get activated by Bow or HH. It suucks big time because it puts you in a bad spot, I even tried to get lvl 3 Flinch Free and it still happens. That's why I don't like playing Lance with a Bow or HH user in multi-player, I have gotten killed many times due to that.

getting hit by a teammate with a flinching attack does trigger the counter with or without flinch free

"If you had flinch free it (ally hitting the counter) wouldn't have happened" as someone who has, for two entire games totalling almost 3 thousand hours, died dozens of times because of people hitting my lance counters or was unable to turn around using power guard as the counter (necessary to then go to powerguard, though only there by a tiny few frames if you're fast enough) would get hit first by someone else or even running out of energy by getting stuck blocking a flurry of attacks- no, flinch free does not work on counters and by god we need a shield flinch free.
