Costco HP 14" laptop DIY Upgrade [TUTORIAL]

DIY tutorial for upgrading the internals of the Costco HP 14" laptop. [CLICK HERE! INFO BELOW!]
Model numbers:
14-df0023cl (2018 model) w/ i3-8130u processor
14-dq1033cl (2019 model) w/ i5-1035g4 processor
You’ll need:
1. Hairdryer, which helps with softening the adhesive on the rubber feet. This makes the feet much easier to remove.
2. Phillips head Screwdriver
3. Plastic card or spudger to assist with lifting off the rubber feet and with removing the back plate clips from the body.
Steps:
1. Remove the rubber feet to expose 4 screws.
2. Unscrew the 6 screws (2018 model) or 8 screws (2019 model) from the underside of the laptop.
3. Use your plastic card / spudger and wedge it into the body of the laptop. Take your time and work around the entire body to undo all of the backplate clips.

Great video! Been searching all over for a similar model to my HP14s cr 1008tx as I've been trying to add a 1tb HDD to it. I realised that HP does not provide a HDD caddy or the SATA cable hence I'm kind of stuck on what to do next. Which caddy would work the best? As it would require one that houses a power supply unit too right?

I have the 2019 (i5) model. Do the RAM cards have to match when you upgrade/replace. For instance the computer comes with a single 4GB RAM card. Can I add a 16GB card and have a working total of 20GB? Or, do the RAM cards have to match like 4gb with 4 gb giving you 8gb, 8gb+8gb=16gb, etc.?

No they do not need to match, but it's preferred to have matching clock speeds so that you're not wasting the performance of your third party RAM stick.

Hey! Thanks for the video. I was wondering if the heat sink is made out of copper, nickel or aluminium? I saw one of the user mentioned that the heat-sink was copper plated and can be paste with liquid metal. If it does, I might as well give it a try and see the performance and thermal of the laptop gets even better.

Hey Hao, I personally have not tried to apply thermal paste to the CPU so I cannot confirm whether or not the heatsink is copper or not.

Kevin or anyone, how can I find a laptop like this one where neither ram is soldered. There are laptops where either one or all ram cards are soldered. Like Lenovo flex 5 is only 600 with 16gb ram...soldered. 16gb is great, but what if I want to more in the future?

Yes, you can. For the 2018 model you had to buy a separate SATA cable to connect the drive to the motherboard, not sure if you need to do that for the 2019 model though.

You should be able too, do it for capacity not speed, 266mhz wont make much diffrence

At the end of my video at 4:16 I show how to do that. Keep in mind you'll also have to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 onto it, or copy the OS image from the 128 GB SSD over using something like Macrium Reflect.

I just upgraded mine to a 1 TB Sabrent m.2 nvme ssd. Has to make recovery drive on a USB stick first, then switch out the SSD, and boot back up with that USB recovery drive

You would probably need some spray adhesive. I did the rubber piece removal on my old laptop with no problems. Remove it carefully, because there are pegs that go into the holes where the screws are. Keep it intact and you should be able to reinstall it.

Check the description for the RAM I purchased. If you have a microcenter near you I suggest getting the inland premium, not sure on pricing for that though. As for the processor, it's not worth your time to upgrade that, nor is it really feasible.

The old way with 4 separate round rubber feet/ one in each corner / was better. These new HP rubber feet strips are so stupid. Are there to cover some screws. But lots of good advice here........Such as heat them up with a hair dryer. This un-glues them, plus keeps the glue intact for when you put them (press them back on, then heat them up again w hair dryer to liquefy the glue) (use a pen as a rolling pin to apply more pressure onto these rubber strips) back on the laptop underside. I have a 17.3 HP laptop but with same damn rubber feet strips. Thanks KenL, now I know how to deal with them. The new HPs with NVMe drives and no dvd players are very fast and sleek slim.

I'd say the amount of effort and time required to replace a laptop processor is not worth it. It's not like a desktop where the CPU slots in..a laptop processor is soldered onto the motherboard. There's other compatibility issues too in which you need to keep in mind.

Anyone know if there's a larger HP battery that will work with this thing to fill out the empty 2.5in bay and give it longer battery life? I can't get software to stop the fan speed from going nuts and that's impacting the battery life since it spins really hard when anything is launched ie when the CPU boosts (i3-1005g1). XTU doesn't work on it yet so I can't reduce voltage and there's that thing with the fans. While I'm at it...anyone tried repasting it? I still have a tube of NT-H1 lying around.

@@andesian2 None so far unfortunately. My battery's still going strong aftee 1yr but once time comes to replace it I hope to put a bigger one in it. I only had one laptop that didn't last long enough to need a new battery, and that was a Lenovo that literally fell apart. I didn't drop it, the build quality just sucked.

I believe the CPU can support up to 64GB of ddr4 3200 RAM but I'm unsure if HP capped it or not. There is space for a 2.5 but I'm unsure of any extra components required to connect it to the motherboard.

Hey, I have this laptop. EDIT: forgot to mention I got the i5-1035g4 version. Be sure to buy ram that is clocked at a base high speed, not based on its overclock. Some people have bought ram labeled at 2666mhz, but after installation its at 2400mhz. I took a chance, with HP, since they lock their bios. I bought 2x8gb hyperx CL17 ram at 2933mhz, and after plug n play, its running at 2933mhz! for space for a new SSD, i dont think so, the back cover has these ridges that support the empty space, but you can upgrade the m.2 to a NVME ssd.

Yes, the rubber feet have adhesive on them so you can simply stick them back on.

I also have another question I got the 2019 model and I installed "cpu-z" on it and it said that there was only one ram installed that only had 4GB. Does that mean that you can only install 1 stick of ram or is that there are two slots and you can add another one and that hp only installed one for some reason?

Glad the video helped. Imo, perform all the updates on the laptop to get it running most efficiently. I believe if you use the HP Support Assistant program it will show you all drivers and firmware that need to be updated.

They have sticky 3M on the underside of the feet. If that came off then you might need to use glue

you can replace one and not both, yes. However make sure the clock speed matches up (for ex. 2666 MHz to 2666 MHz).

I added 4gb but I hate the Fan in this notebook. CPU is amazing, GPU is a made for 2D (Videos websurfing)... 3D gaming is dreadful. ISP screen and CPU are amazing though.

Yeah, fan is the one downside of this laptop. In the slickdeal thread there's some steps you can take to reduce how often the fan runs which makes it a little more bearable.
