Arsenal could've swapped in an outfield player and he'd have done better at these PKs.

As a goalkeeper, Raya was signalling which way he was going to go 5 business days before the man utd players kicked the ball. And he dived 3 times to his left for 3 times in a row . I feel like after going that way 2 times, he tried to reverse phycology by going it 3 times. He wasn't great in that shootout.
@rafael_lana14 күн бұрын
Tbf going same side in a row can be very effective, specially if you're getting close. Most players when nervous default to the opposite of the dominant foot anyways, the most comfortable place to strike it, more prevalent in lower leagues too. So that part I don't blame him, is the obvious body language that ends him

I have a theory. Because Raya is only 6ft with t-rex arms, he needs to dive earlier to get to the corners. And I reckon he was basing his dives simply off research of the takers, not actually reacting to what they were doing live.

@chibbyranjo12 күн бұрын
There are schools of thought to penalty saving, but Raya failed the entrance exam to all of them with this performance. Keepers quite often have a dive planned ahead of time. Think Jordan Pickford for England against the Swiss in Euro 2024. He makes it a mental process. “All I have to do is save ONE and it gives my team a chance.” But it’s clear that Bayindir’s process was all about giving the taker the bare minimum of information ahead of striking the ball, and a reliance on his size and agility to react in time to make saves. You wouldn’t accuse Pickford and Bayindir of having the same approach to the physical art of saving penalties. Maybe it’s harsh on Raya. With the exception of Bruno Fernandes, there’s not a lot of historical data on penalty taking from the rest of United’s chosen five. Raya may have been flying blind heading into the shootout and decided that the only thing he could do was to go early and try and treat it as a 50-50 chance of saving. In reality goalkeepers only have a roughly 25% chance of saving a penalty. And all this from a United fan. Penalties may be a weakness in Raya’s repertoire. Statistically speaking though, concentrating heavily on a 25% chance of success is not good gambling. Raya is a sweeper for his team, an extra player in possession and allows Arsenal to push an extra man into attack, especially against ten men. It wasn’t his fault that his teammates threw him under the bus after 120+ minutes of play, by performing so poorly in front of the opposition goal. On the day Bayindir demonstrated the average odds of saving penalties in the shootout, and Raya didn’t. I watched twelve years of David De Gea in goal for Manchester United. He wasn’t good at saving penalties. And yet, probably one of the finest goalkeepers of the last 15 years. You’d never say De Gea was incapable of making incredible reaction saves, it was his whole game. He played like a hockey goalkeeper, with his legs, and it made him unique and a world beater on his day. But it remains, he wasn’t good at saving penalties.

Disagree, most penalty takers don't have the confidence to change their target at the last millisecond, especially young players or those not aren't used to taking penalties like Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, and Amad. As somebody who was also a goalkeeper until I was 18, and also managed to get myself a fractured cheekbone, I can confirm, he fucked up. Raya did what I used to do, but there was a slight difference between the two. He commits so early, and I used to as well, but as I shifted my weight to one side, the same way Raya has, as soon as that weight planted, I would shift my extremely low center of gravity, and throw myself the other way, easily getting to the post, to purposely throw the striker off cue. Worked at least 75% of the time, if it wasn't a save, the sudden change would cause them to mis-hit it entirely

I have to disagree. Yes Raya went early but only Fernandez punished him. All the other takers picked their spot, head down and just hoped. None of them noticed Raya went early and as such, if Raya had guessed the right way for any of them, he would have saved them. I do agree that he should be holding his position as long as possible but that wasn't the worst penalty keeping performance I've seen. Edit: A few days later, Burnley vs Sunderland ended 0-0 with Trafford saving both penalties. He moved very early on both which in turn meant he could cover the whole left hand side of the goal. Taker had his head down both times and went left - outcome? Both saved by Trafford. Like I said, going early can mean saving some penalties which would not be saveable otherwise - the key is to only go early if you are confident the penalty taker is not a stutterer.

Z, come on man... You have to do a little more research. What you said is true, most professional keepers can get to the corner without jumping early. But Raya isn't that guy. He's 6'0" on a good day with longer cleats on his boots. He isn't the best at jumping as he's been done over the top a few times. Him falling over with his hands stretched to max won't cover the goal, he won't get even close. In exact contrast to that Bayindir is 6'6"... It's like watching the NBA and watching someone a half a foot taller shot blocking someone. It looks bad because it's a huge size mismatch. Bayindir's height, let alone his reach, and jumping capabilities means he's getting to any corner and he can jump later due to his size. Raya can't, he's a small keeper. He's a defensive midfielder playing keeper who happens to have good reactions and can catch the ball. He was obviously coached to jump early as Man United usually are good penalty takers. His reaction save during the game shows when he's not coached to jump early(jumping to the side most often the taker goes) to get to the corners he's good enough to block most shots. It's like when you play lower league football and the goal keeper is 5'7" and the regulation goals are 24'x8'... I'm shooting high, I'm chipping you in the match for the disrespect.
