Movies like American Beauty are the best way to work around the narrator dying. In that movie, the narrator literally mentions you'll see him die at some point, but you quickly forget it. In other movies, the narrator never mentions they'll die until it's already happened. I could see a game like this pulling a similar twist where the player dies and the ending reveals the narrator was actually telling you how he died the whole time.

"Why do you people stand still when people do weird prancing dances in front of you in the middle of the night?" Well, if they were intelligent horror protagonists, they'd be using that time to draw a weapon, take up a fighting stance, and issue a warning to back off. But most horror protagonists seem to be stupid. Edit: Honestly, I like the original Smiling Man better despite the aged graphics. Because there's nothing wrong with dancing at night. So why is it dumb to not want to attack or not be hostile to someone for that? Btw, the MC did yell at the man, and ran away from the man when he chased the MC. Many people don't carry weapon and don't want to start fights so it's realistic. It's not bad to not want to start fights.
