This game feels like a fever dream, and i mean a bad one at that. The Monkey spouting random bullshit that ocasionally turns disturbing and ominous for no reason at all while following you from room to room even when dead is in itself something i can't explain why i feel so uneasy towards. Like, his entire presence feels *wrong*, an actual anomaly in an otherwise silly horror game. ...am i thinking too hard about a game involving an buff doge chasing after you, or does someone else also feel this aversion towards the little shit?

Fun fact: monkey that follows you from the gifs and stuff is from an actual tv show from Japan called “Ōkiku naru Kobut” that ran from 1959 to 1988 that was also shown in Latin America. But here’s the odd/creepy thing about this: the original Japanese version is considered lost media; meaning that there is no known saved or archived episodes from the Japanese version, but some clips of the Latin American version are still floating around which is where we got the viral gifs of the monkey from. It's disorientating because of how frequently you move from room to room, the often tiny size means you never see far, and knowing that Big Doge not only can smash through walls and doors, but frequently teleports around, with the monkey often getting in the way while spouting "moral support", yeah it's hard to relax.

7:38 Ive seen this on a myth debunking video actually, when someone's head is decapitated, their neurons dont stop right away, but basically after a few seconds the head is "alive" but more or less brain dead, bc the neurons that process higher thinking (like thought processes) are among the first to die out. So basically the brain STEM might function for up to 20 seconds, but the person wouldn't be AWARE of anything beyond maybe the first 5 seconds or so-beyond that, its essentially just nerves twitching. IDK if Manly will actually see this, but hopefully I can answer the question for SOMEONE at least!

The decapitation thing is actually true, we figured it out during the french revolution when a scientist was guillotined, he set out to keep blinking until he died to figure out how long it took decapitation to kill you, and he did it for around 20 seconds. Like, we obviously did some more studies and whatnot after the fact, to determine more specifics, but mainly on other decapitated animals, since ya know, pretty hard to sew a head back on when it's already dead. So the french revolution test is still our standard awnser. Also I can't believe how fucking scary they made buff doge. Like obviously there's the ambiance and the confusing layout, the unreliable UI, and the fact its voice is never subtitled, but also the fact it can knock you through several walls in a *maze*, that then the walls regenerate is scary in its own right because it's a consequence for failure that isn't just a restart, and in the already disorienting rooms, it's an arguably worse punishment then just starting over.

Out of everything the devs could of added to the series, they decided to add a robotic monkey that follows you around spitting out old memes and sometimes becoming creepy. I wouldn't have had it any other way. Also not sure if anyone already mentioned it, but yes the decapitated head fact is true! A scientist experimented on a death row inmate. Immediately after his head got cut off, the scientist shouted his full name, and he opened his eyes in reaction.

About the head staying conscious, we're still not entirely sure. There is a fleeting amount of EEG activity (they tested rats back in 2011 with an average of 4 seconds EEG activity after decap). But as for actual consciousness, awareness of external thought, we don't know. We only have anecdotes of people *looking* aware

On a side note, there were some studies done about a decapitated head surviving after being guillotined, but what did that mean? Studies on pigs too, and rats showing a slow death wave of electrical activity. So if your brain's neurons are still firing for 4 to 30 seconds afterward, is that biological death or the death of the self? Kinda hard to do research studies on it tho for obvious reasons... I think the rearranging rooms is a really impressive bit of code that adds a lot to an otherwise pretty standard “horror maze.” It’s genuinely like that nightmare you have where a monster is chasing you in a maze that doesn’t inhibit him but you can make any sense of. It’s even more impressive that it takes place out of your sight and you almost never catch it doing so despite it happening clearly one room away. Further still, think about how much this would add to other horror games with maze like sections?

This was surpringly scary! I think it unnerved me so much because it played greatly on the feeling of "uneasiness." I think thats the whole concept of backrooms in a nutshell, when we see pictures of them we get a strong feeling of "wrongness" because of all the empty space. It puts us on edge until we find something 'familiar' again. The monkey's presence and unsettling dialogue really played into that whole "I'm extremely unnerved but I don't know why." It was the little things that did the most I feel. When you're only given tiny pieces of a puzzle it makes your imagination run wild looking for answers. That's my take anyway!

I think the monkey is a sort of companion that lives in there but has some sort of connection to the doge, like a living puppet agaisnt his will. The red painting saying "don't trust the monkey" is actually the doge making you to kill him since if he's alive he will alert you constantly if he's near, and you can see that because when his eyes turn white it's actually doge talking.
