I strongly believe that this family created this religion as a coping mechanism. Poverty can take a huge toll on a person's mental health. We often start questioning our luck when things don't happen like the way we wanted it to happen. I think this family felt the same thing that "if we pray to Allah so much then why isn't he helping us ? Is Allah even real ?". This story is slightly similar to peer-e-kamil. :Like the father(Hashim mobeen) chooses some other religion and told his family to follow him : but the daughter(Imama hashim) refuses and follows islam and run away from the family. :The elder brother(waseem) later dies because of the religious reasons. Just a correction brother in Islam there is no such thing as west direction is considered bad. Only direction in Islam is the direction we face when we pray namaz. As a respect we tend to not point feet towards that direction This direction in Islam is towards the kabaa(sacred mosque in Mecca) which can dynamically change based on where u are.

There was no direct orders to kill apostates in Quran first of all, and secondly the law of apostasy is not an Islamic law. It was inducted in the Islamic system in the later period, namely, during the Abbasid empire. The concept of apostasy emerged with Christian backgrounds. After the fall of the Roman Empire in the seventh century, Christians accepted Islam on a mass level. At the time there was no system for education and training. Although these Christians converts accepted Islam by reciting the kalimah, but their practices somewhat remained as before. So, they inducted the concept of apostasy in Islam, with an Arabic name, i.e. irtidad. The Arabic equivalent of apostasy is irtidad. It was only later, maybe two hundred years after the Prophet, that Muslim fuqaha or jurisprudence, devised this law that apostates from Islam should be killed. These fuqaha emerged in the Abbasid period, in the period of Muslim empires. This law that they devised has no sanction in the Quran. It was formulated by the fuqaha, and I don't believe in the fuqaha on this matter.
