I think the demon symbolizes that unsettling feeling of getting older and dying. The more older you get, or the closer it gets, the more it scares you. I think the reason why it appears in their 18th birthday is because it is an age that is considered mature. The mind starts thinking about the future more, and that's what made them aware or finally see the demon. It also kinda makes sense that the mother says it's what made them thrive. The fear of dying and growing old pushes everyone to live a life that's worthwhile. Edit: Keyword: "symbolizes"

the thing i can't figure out is this: it's implied that the sentinel gets gradually closer over time as your death nears. it really couldn't be any other way. it's been in the family for generations, and if it could go from "he's far away" to "suddenly in your face" then it wouldn't be useful at all, death would sneak up on you as easily as anyone else. so it's weird that there were at least 2-3 people who already had the "gift" who seemed to be completely surprised by what happened. had they just stopped keeping an eye on their sentinel for years? did the sentinel just bamboozle them all, all of a sudden, in a way he never did to their ancestors?

I noticed how Emily's Sentinel left the frame and wasn't anywhere near her the moment she entered the door way while the 3 other Sentinels were directly next to their own charges as the earthquake intensified. I don't know if it was intentional but under the presumption that this was an older constructed house being under the door frame might've been the safest place in the earthquake. (This does not hold true for modern houses.) I like to think that she just narrowly escaped death by jumping back where and when she did.

Hello fellow overthinker, I’ll try and explain in depth. This person has just turned 18 and is explained by her family that she has a gift. The gift is that there is this demonic/supernatural entity that appears once you turn 18, and this entity determines your life span. It does based on the distance it is from you; so if it’s very far away, your life span is very long, vice versa. Now some people might see this as a curse, knowing when you die might seem like a good thing to know at first, but it’ll naturally make you want to change fate’s course and alter the date of your death. In the video, the entity now appears much closer to her, and some of the other family members’ entities also have come closer. It doesn’t say diectly, but it appears that something like an earthquake happens, which takes the lives of most of the family members, specifically the ones who had their entities very close to them. @@KushTaco20 I thought the same thing, but an earthquake seems like a rather weird way to end it all. Not as "scary" as I would have imagined. My initial thought had been that the sister (or whoever that disapproving lady was) left the room to go get a weapon and then killed them all, and that's why all of their monsters were there: because they were about to be murdered by a family member who... maybe had had enough of the monster thing? I dunno. And then the champagne glasses toppling over and that was just because of the, like, scream of the monsters propagating through from whatever universe they're from or whatever.

This is a great horror film, it isn't like those getting cursed or something haunting you type, instead the people in this story died because of natural cause, they just use the creatures to tell them their death date getting near which strikes more fear in people since people fear death. This short film is like the Dollmaker, using a new perspective to tell the story

Oh I get it.. This does mean that when you turn 18 that's your first step to dying.. Either of old age or something. This means that when we turn 18 we become mature enough to know that we will die someday and that death is just waiting for us. Sometimes death is closer than we thought. Even if everybody thinks that death is not now, but you know. You know death is right in front of you. The older you are, the nearer it is. ..in this film, I'm guessing they were near them since some of them if not all are gonna die. The sudden earthquake might be the cause. The family just had a way to see death and be protected by it (in a way that they could potentially avoid getting killed) at least until they truly come to the point that they will die at their destined time....IT comes nearer when you're in danger and when possibility of dying is added... IT comes nearer when you grow older....Some in the family also said that most of them went insane... I could understand... Who would be comfortable with that look and that sound... Is the management so low on funds that they had to resort to zombies in a black suit.. At least if theyre zombies.. Let them have a nice face and actual ability to talk and you know... User friendly?... They should really watch Black Butler.. But just the abilities, face, elegance and companionship.. Not the 'I'll eat your soul once you die thing'.... Eh... Not sure though

I think they presented a face of Death i.e. Body undergoes this process of decay ( post mortem stages). Now, this could be interpreted in a way that they are not going to have a peaceful death but a death of ugly kind. That's why 'they were seeing ' their death as such ( which makes them someways responsible for their vision {The reason for insanity in family}). Or the production team wanted to have a scary face to add to intensity of horror. They anyways didn't have a quiet , peaceful death, one prays for.
