Yeah diversity is good as long as it's not forced. But just by the fact that you're bringing attention to it I'm guessing you're one of those people that have to check the boxes. Alter has lasted this long and has done this well because the vast majority of the writing of each story is good storytelling nobody is thinking oh my God this is so so diverse there are so many Black people there are so many Hindu people there are so many blah blah blahs. They're thinking this is an incredible story and I'm glad I saw it.

Hi! I loved this film! I took from it that the daughter resented having to take care of her ailing Mother. Beautiful horror short! Her ever increasing burdens! the generational trauma! Body Horror and Pyschological horror. I loved it a lot. Admittedly, I was confused at bits, especially as to why Ma kali kept coming over, but then it was clear at the end. Kali is also the Goddess of Time, Of Kal, of the end, of destruction, of new beginnings. So that's what happened. Time healed her baggages. Time took her mother away. Time ended her misery. :) Is this set in South Africa ?
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
Sunita here. Thanks for watching, and for taking the time to comment. We were using Kali more as the one who destroys to create new beginnings, so the idea is that she leads Ash to realise that she has to hand back the trauma and so let the burden die. She’s also the true mother, so in this spirit, she contrasts with the devouring mother who passed the burden on. The film isn’t set in South Africa, but it is about South African Indians. The idea is that the mother moved from South Africa to England, like my family did, but brought that baggage over with her.

As disturbing as it was, i, like the story of a woman being guided by the Great Godess to shed all her burdens and become nothing so she may become something new. Indian folktales are rife with such tales. The mother must have expressed all her frustration by emotionally abusing her daughter. Which I understand but in no way do I sympathize. The only mercy her daughter could afford her was a peaceful passing, no connection, no apologies The only question I have is why tapes? Is it because they hold some emotional significance to her.
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
.Thanks for watching our film. We are glad you liked it. The tapes represent the burdens that have been passed down to her through the generations and have become lodged in her body causing pain and deformation. She needs to listen to them and understand them so she can move forward, so we thought the audio tape was a good metaphor for that process.

What I understood is the lump on her shoulder was a tumor which had outgrown because of the unhealed trauma that was instilled by her mother's narcissistic traits which was depicted through the cassette wire. And in the end she realised, what is the actual origin of the trauma. And force feed her mother with the trauma she herself was responsible for. And let her die in peace. So in the end its visible that the tumor dissolved, depicting resolved old trauma. This is my interpretation as a doctor.

My Father became a burden after my Mother divorced him. Growing up , he often complained about how difficult it was to raise kids. The expenses. Then 3 years ago when he became immobile from aging 74 years old. He demanded my siblings take care of him. Or else, no one would get money from his will. My siblings were too busy raising their kids. The only solution was to send him into a care home as he needed special treatment. He needed to be spoon fed, his nappy changed. My father chose his own care home. Private care which costs 2k per week. He remained in the care home for 3 years before he died. When his house was sold. was only enough to cover the costs of his care. He used his will to get our attention. to help him. But in the end. His money was spent on his care home. All of his life was about money. One time when he said my children stress me they are expensive. I advised him to use condoms ! 😌

So she's not playing 'cowboys n injuns'. I googled voortrekkers, and langer. She has to put up a defensive wall to keep out all her past trauma. And her fear on the present, the unpaid bills for one, and future, her mom dying. She needs a bf, I guess...if 'langer' is slang for 'penis'? The cassette tape and old school walkman put the time period in the 80's, cool. Because I wondered, "just google the going price of the special vase, duh.", but no web back then. I remember cutting and taping and rewinding w the erasure end of a # 2 pencil, when doing cassette 'surgery',,,those mix tapes were precious😅 Enjoyed the short, really captivating. As well as starting to forget Things is terrifying to loss your Mind .The Tape? ' Wholly Nothing??
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
Hi, thanks so much for the comment. The repetition on the tape is a play on words: wholly/holy nothing. Ash first feels the debasement and humiliation that has been passed on as a result of the historical exploitation of Indians in South Africa as indentured labourers, but she has to free herself from the psychological entrapment by finding the ‘holy’ or transcendent emptiness that allows for new things to develop.
@gutsybearАй бұрын
I'm a little confused... the figurines she put out in the beginning says Voortrekker, which is afrikaans. When her mother was hanging off the bed and she tried to help her, she said voetsek, which is how we in South Africa say go away or, I would say more accurately, f**k off. Not sure what language that is, to be perfectly honest, but pretty much everyone here uses it. All this indicates they are maybe from South Africa, but the nurse and the other man sounded english. Did they immigrate, perhaps? I'm just curious 🤔
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
Hi! Sunita here. It is indeed South African slang, and the film is set in England as you said! The implication is that the mum character moved away from South Africa, like my family did, as it’s about how the psychological legacy of South Africa’s history clings onto people, even those who leave. They are still trapped in the laager of the mind. Our lead actresses also have South African connections. Ellora Torchia’s mother is from South Africa and Mariam Bassa is from Durban and stars as Aya in the South African comedy film series the Kandasamys. Hope you like it. Thank you! We did all nearly die of cassette tape on set - it stank like parmesan cheese and left glittery flecks everywhere. And we had 20kg of the stuff!

They are indeed! The mother in the movie is South African Indian and the film is about how the history of Indians in South Africa still affects the younger generations, even if they no longer live there.

Can someone explain what the premise is 😅 I've watched it twice and still don't know what's going on
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
Hi there. Thanks for watching twice!! Have you ever felt all the tension in the world building up inside of you until it is ready to burst? It’s about understanding where that comes from and how to get free from it.
@SunFlower-tb9zgАй бұрын
Please can someone explain this to me it went over my head but i m inquisitive to know whats the real story 😢
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
It’s a fairytale about how psychological trauma is passed down and lives in the body and builds up if you ignore it - and how you need to start listening to the pain to learn how to become free.
@SunFlower-tb9zgАй бұрын
@Spoorshortfilm the tape was the trauma passed by the mother so her daughter is feeding her the trauma back in the form of tape? And what was the picture about?
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
@@SunFlower-tb9zg Yeah, that’s absolutely what the tape represents! Her specific trauma is the experience of Indians in South Africa, but we know that is quite niche! The picture is the Hindu Goddess Kali, who represents necessary destruction that leads to creation, so is a symbol of the transformation that the main character needs. She is also known as Kali Ma, so is the true mother. Thanks for asking and for watching.

Thanks for watching. Sorry you didn't understand. It's about how Ma Kali can help us break out of patterns set by our past that are keeping us trapped. For our main character, these entrapping patterns are about the history of Indians in South Africa.

Interesting premise but I feel that it should have been made clearer as to what was going on. Maybe have the MC listen to the tape and have a flash back to what caused the trauma instead of just relying on words
@Gauravkumar-jm4veАй бұрын
Why Goddess Mother Kali picture used?
@SpoorshortfilmАй бұрын
We’ve used Ma Kali because she symbolises transformation, destroying the old to nurture the new, and she is the true mother who replaces the devouring mother and leads to transcendence.
