HORROR START for Our New Hero?! Baseline Strategy Introduction | Beginner to Winner Ep. 2

After taking a look at Jake's first hands last time out, we set him up with a baseline strategy to work with and make his decisions. How did Jake get on with implementing it?

With that attitude you will go a long way! No one can be great from the start! If you work hard and smart, you will get there. You already do so by having a stronger player teaching you. I think Nick has done a great job actually of giving you very reasonable and easy (easy is relative) to work with guide lines and frameworks for putting together a simple strategy. Keep thinking in terms of the buckets, then make your decision. You will crush the games in no time. If I could give an advice - literally have a note next to your screen that has all 4 buckets and the corresponding action. Follow that every time it’s your turn to press a button. Like Nick says, even if you fail to put it in the right bucket, at least your thought process is good. Many times you already bucket it correctly. As you practice you will get it right more often and make even better decisions.

Jake you legit come across as one of the soundest nicest most harmless human beings in the world, Poker let me be honest with you is a shit game, Let me explain why the more you learn about how you should play you more you realise how little you know if that makes sense. Very much enjoying this series and very much rooting for you to get to grips with it, Remember that gameshow you might be too young but, Think it was hosted by Cila Black called moment of truth, Were some random middle aged guy had a week to learn how to do like 100 kickups or spin 50 plates at a time or something random and he would win 10k or whatebver if he could do it. This reminds me of that, I think though if you legit just play play play and talk to yourself during every hand for example here I am raising because of this reason or I am folding here because of that you will get there, THe key is not volume or just playing its learning and making a reason for what your doing even if the reason is wrong in theory at least you are thinking about it and then you will get that lightbulb moment

In my limited teaching experience, showing 80/20, 70/30, 60/40 and flips in Equilab, introducing the concept of domination, was a game changer for beginners

I love this series so much. Jake seems like the sweetest and most wholesome guy and I’m 100% rooting for him to smash it and become a crusher. Also Nick is a much better teacher than he gives himself credit for. This really isn’t an easy game to teach OR learn, there’s so much nuance to the game and applying the theory learned off the table whilst playing the game in the moment is tough! Jake when making these videos as well don’t worry about the comments or how you’re going to look, there’ll always be random dickheads but the huge majority of the online poker community are nice people who know that this ain’t an easy thing to do and appreciate the content 😌 keep it up!

A good rule of thumb you might want to pass on is: On the River, whenever you have a bluffcatcher, FOLD your hand to a potbet/raise. At least until you have a good grasp on what makes a good bluuffcatcher! That is a piece of advice I took to me and it stopped me from BLEEDING money and thus pushed me towards being a winninng player in the micros... So far at least! 😅Otherwise: Keep grinding!

jake's attitude is great! you can tell he wants to do well. looking forward to follow this series. not sure if it's too useful, but one thing that came to mind that helped me with frustration/overthinking when i started playing was simply that "folding is fine if unsure". saved me alot of thoughtspace for spots i could actually somewhat wrap my head around instead of going down paths with theories i was basically making up as i went. i feel like straightforward abc poker is a pretty good baseline to start at to grasp the basic ideas of the game.

Massive fan of using the 4 categories from the postflop game plan, I remember that being a real thought process game-changer when I was learning. As someone else mentioned, it might be worth showchasing or letting Jake play around with equilab or something similar to get a more material sense of how 'strong' certain hands really are and kind of tune that bucketing intuition.

Hey Jake quick tips for the overall poker mindset : -When we are lucky and hitting good hands, we want to maximize the profits (Bucket 1 - Betting and raising) -When we are unlucky, we want to minimize the losses (Bucket 2 - Checking) It's the general idea regarding ''luck'' since we can't control it. On another note, keep at it! We are seeing progress already.
