@@AdmCornFlake Well you are certainly lucky to experience that. I never experience anything except tending to wake up in the middle of a long novella or through a couple of his shorter stories. I've got the entire Horror Babble audio works of Lovecraft on my phone - I think it's a bit over 51 hours! - and I can recognize nearly every story by listening to a sentence or two in the middle of it!! I love the Dream Cycle. I guess that Lovecraft himself was disappointed in it... At least he was dissapointed in the Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath. I read some correspondence he wrote, lamenting that he felt the writing was subpar and didn't live up to what was in his mind. Personally, I really enjoy the Dream Cycle stories, especially the Dream Quest. Anyway, thanks for uploading them together like this.

Okay, let me see if I've got this right: Randolph Carter successfully leaves the earth for another dimension, lives thousands of years as a sort of deity before deciding that it's not really for him, and returns to earth as some sort of alien being while trying to resume human form? Why was Lovecraft unhappy with this one, if I've got it right then this is one heck of a story!

The Cats showed judicious mercy to the Zoogs after Carter discovered their planned treacherous scheme of murder @nd Cat-napping. I found this merciful behavior uncharacteristic, and unrealistic in a portrayal of Cats as a race. But, I also realized Lovecraft's genius had exceeded my expectations. For in showing mercy for one small incident, the fictional Cats indeed adhered to what real Cats would do; namely, by planting subconscious expectations of mercy in their enemies' minds, how exquisitely delicious the cruelty of the Cats will be for the Cats NEXT time purely because of the surprise.

Yes ~ The horrific Outer Gods (like Azathoth) are apparently oblivious to the Dreamland's Great Ones. The Great Old Ones, though, have a watchful eye to the Dreamlands & seek to corrupt in small ways, preparing for the awakening & breaking of banishments placed upon them by the benevolent Elder Gods. _ Once of free will & power renewed, then make the Dreamlands (as with waking world Earth) a nightmare of tortures, destruction, death & insanity. In this, an avatar of Hastur ( the priest "Not to be Described" in yellow) seeks corruption & a Dreamlands avatar of the Crawling Chaos, Nyarlathetep. Nyarlathetep tends the Other Gods much like babysitting super-powered children . . . yet when / if the awakening of The Great Old Ones happens, then he will be the emissary of their evil, opening the way (no doubt) through Yog Sothoth, the Gate & the Key, to bodily bring the titanic horrors to extend domain over a nearly defenseless Dreamlands. _ As for "The Other Gods" - they could be The Great Ones . . . dancing on mount Hathag-Kla & punishing Barzai the Wise for his hubris / pride OR a different group of gods who may phase between worlds, rather than set specifically gods of the Dreamlands, as are the The Great Ones.

Thank you, Sir. H. P. Lovecraft was largely a recluse, his time with people only in the last few years of his life, briefly married & dumped, yet acquiring "The Lovecraft Circle" of men whose literary genius has much elevated vistas of terror & adventure to be so much enjoyed (including Robert Bloch, Robert Hayward Barlow, Robert E. Howard, & August Derleth). Touched by a fascination in classical Greek, Lovecraft based some portion of his pantheon of gods after the Greek / Roman gods ~ with Nyarlethotep based on Hermes / Mercury. The amazing Ramsey Campbell & even the insipid Stephen King have used Lovecraft's Nyarlethotep, along with Mythos descriptiveness & vocabulary elocution to send shivers to the public. H. P. L. was a pioneer, a relative contemporary of Jules Verne & H. G. Wells - such an early time of great minds among inconspicuous men whose dreams would lend much to over decades of readers wanting worlds to explore.

Listening to the mind of Lovecraft is what I imagine one would hear sitting in on a lecture given by alien travelers of some distant galaxy....it's obvious they can communicate in our languages yet you find it hard to follow, only thing you're sure of is where they came from, has to be a nightmarish and foreboding planet.

Haven’t listened for a bit...much love Ian and Jen hope you are well mates. I know you probably have a huge lineup but how about “The Great and Secret Show” by Clive...maybe the whole “Art Trilogy” ? Not totally horror and quite long but I think would kill.

As much as I worship Cthulhu, these Dream Quest stories are fantastic! Maybe it's because of the way cats are personified...I like cats a lot myself and so did HPL!

Those stories are part of the Cthulhu Mythos, rather than the Dream Cycle. This collection adheres to the following: www.hplovecraft.com/writings/sources/dc.aspx

This story really humanizes Lovecraft to me, especially his love of cats. He had incorrect beliefs but so did most people in his time.
