Thanks for this classic gem! I happen to be born in West Gothia (Västergötland), and not too far from what James seem to have been inspired of: The Count's manor is probably Läckö, built for the De la Gardie's (of which Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie was the most prominent).

Fantastic - thank you for the insight! I apologise for my poor pronunciation. I'll be reading up on Läckö later! Thanks again, Ian.

You're the Dr. Frankenstein of narration: you have dug up, electrified, and resurrected these stories for tens of thousands of people. Way to use your talents. Better than anything on TV! Thanks.

Saw this one acted on Britbox, "Ghost Stories for Christmas." It was horrifying. However, as I learned from reading "Dracula" by Brom Stoker, no film can give you a picture that you can get from books. It's impossible. M. R. James mastered the ghost and horror stories. 😊

As a Swede, I really need to read this. Mostly to figure out the place names more specifically, since they are a bit hard to figure out in English. ;) No fault of the narrator of course, it fits the story to have them in an English accent after all! Also, curious about any possible inspiration for the story setting, my country is very seldom the setting for stories by non-Swedish writers after all! Edit: Oh, I see it is probably Läckö castle, time for a google!

HorrorBabble I hope so!! You capture perfectly the creeping unease and the - what James himself called - pleasing terror of the slow, insipid build up of horror to the last detail, and of Mr Wraxall’s cry to God

I think it could best be summed up as 'Do not call up that which you cannot hang up on.' Spoiler: The traveler addressed the Count directly three times, and said that he wanted to meet the Count. After each, a padlock came off of the coffin. The figures that pursued him would have been the Count and the creature that killed the men who trespassed in the Count's forest.
