Horse and Great Pyrenees

Our 10 month old Great Pyrenees, Abby and our horse Reggie are better friends than I thought. Abby is a true working Great Pyrenees. She guards everyone and everything.

Gosh, I love my Great Pyrenees, Wendell was 3 yrs. old last month. Such a loving gentle giant. But please, don’t enter his territory without my wife and I. One day our neighbor received some mail of ours. He saw my wife and I in the back of our property and brought some mail with him he received by mistake. My wife went to collect, our neighbor handed the mail to my wife over the 5ft. Chain link fence. Wendell immediately went into his protective gear, he tried to bite through the chain link fence and dig under it. That’s when I saw how so protective he is, the guy broke the property line when he reached over the fence to give my wife the mail. He went from sweet to lunatic in a second. Wow, what a dog💕💕💕👍

I have a young pyr, and mine does the same thing. Calm and kind with every part of our “flock”, but every now and again you can see the shifty eyes checking for danger.

I grew up with a Pyre in a big city of Lynn. We knew nothing about the breed. We let him roam around, it’s what he did, and everybody loved him. Hercules was his name. My family and I would bump into perfect strangers who knew him from his wonderings. One day a big German shepherd was lose on our street. All us kids were afraid of him. Hercules jumped off our porch pinned the shepherd and just held him until he calmed down then let him go and the shepherd was sweet after. Amazing breed the PYRE

Careful, a horse can develop separation anxiety. Our horse was starting to show signs when we loaded up the Pyrenees and took him for a ride along into town. They have the guardian thing down after a few thousand years of breeding.

They are VERY focused on Protecting ,but very patient and easy going, but if another dog arrives and is aggressive toward the Pyr., the Pyr. will try to get along with it, but only for so long and then get away from them because the Pyr.will show it who is really Boss, and it don't take but a couple of seconds, and usually its mostly scare tactics and they won't inflict any real damage to the other dog.

Your Great Pyrenees looks a lot like my Golden Retriever and the first time she met a male deer at a local animal preserve (Henry's Art, Prospect, KY) in the parking lot, they touched noses. I think horses/deer, if used to the presence of dogs, know which are safe, and they just become family. (This dog was raised by the household cats, and when they passed on, she needed a buddy, so she got her own kitten to raise. They are still best friends.
