Do you know how the skin of a horse works compared to the skin of a human? It is actually thinner and contains more nerve endings. So yes, the horse absolutely felt it. The way the horses treat each other is not a way to justify something 'we' do to them. Whipping, kicking and punching hurts a horse and punishing is cruel.
@Sigmund_Fraud3 жыл бұрын
@@claudia273 wrong. Horses hide, or skin is at least 1mm *thicker* than human skin. Can be up to 6mm thick in certain areas. But of course they can feel pain! @claudia2733 жыл бұрын
@@Sigmund_Fraud It doesn't matter how thick the entire skin is. Most of the skin is the dermis (middle layer). The dermis is up to 6mm, so about 90% of the skin. The nerve endings are located in the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin, which has a thickness of approximately 50um (0.05 mm). Recent studies show it is in fact thinner than the human upper layer. But yes, whipping does hurt more, but that doesn't mean this cannot hurt. That sounds super fun, I think the idea of having to complete a course or set of challenges on a random horse is a cool idea, but it shouldnt be a part of the pentathlon. While every equestrian should be able to ride different horses its gonna take a very skilled rider to jump that high on a random horse, and these rides just arent. If you watch the rides they're super off balance at even a canter and fly out the saddle at the smallest overreach. Its obsurd to me these riders who have to focus on 4 other sports are jumping higher that most equestrians who dedicate their lives to horses ever will. The jumps should be lowered and they should have their own horses imo
@lesleywilbourne78233 жыл бұрын
They often do that in showjumping events and it’s great fun to watch and I can safely say I have NEVER seen a rider whip the horse he/she is riding. That punishment whipping the rump that this woman used shows a total lack of horsemanship - you whip a horse there you’re not going to get a very good response from the horse! She’s lucky it was better mannered than she was because it could have bucked and reared until it dumped her on the ground. And I wouldn’t have blamed it if it had. As for the coach thumping it, that was just one incidence apparently it was witnessed before the rider even entered the arena.

I'd bet your teams had many more riding skills than this rider, who appears to be not much more than an advanced beginner. You don't have to "bond" with a well-trained horse for a brief competition, while that would be nice. This horse had some issues, the rider appeared to be scared of the horse and/or jumping, and the horse's problems were completely beyond the rider's skill level. It also didn't help that the horse had a gag bit, she was really tugging on the reins, and the rider's unprofessional meltdown was the end of it. I was surprised that of the riders I saw, most of them looked like they had pretty basic riding skills - I had thought pentathletes had a lot of riding experience, but maybe not.

I owned, bred and trained horses for 27 years. The coach "punching" the horse? That horse was ready to go backwards through the fence. She did that to tell the horse the fence was there and to move forward. She didn't hurt that horse one bit. The rider's punching also didn't hurt that horse at all. The rider likely was trying to draw attention to the rear of the horse to force it forward. That is a horse likely close to 1,000 pounds. Those strikes would not have hurt me at 160 lbs! The real issue is the horse was afraid and it and the rider could be hurt if it was forced to participate further. I get that you work hard to get there and want to finish but emotions got ahead of the rider and she should have quit pushing the horse before that point. But the mental stress on the horse will be much harder to get over for that animal than those minimal touches by the coach and rider.

Thank you for saying that Jasmine. I agree, this event needs to be banned. It's pure cruelty. Horses are incredibly sentient animals very in tune with human behavior, and react accordingly. It is barbaric, that any horse is supposed to accept a total stranger and then be forced to make these increasingly difficult (highly unnatural) jumps over solid objects. All steeple chase events should be banned. If we insist on using horses in sport, it should be on flats only. My heart aches for these creatures. They are not cars you just jump in/on and push to breaking limit.
@ItsAVolcano3 жыл бұрын
The event kinda made sense when they first made it, when it was supposed to demonstrate the various skills of a late 19th century cavalryman. In particular the horse events made a hell of a lot more sense when everyone participating had at least a decade of riding experience. This is very much a "sport" that has evolved beyond it's purpose long ago.

In Eventing - local level to Olympic Level, you're not even allowed to Whip the horse more than 2x in a row. Pentathlon is an old sport developed for the Olympics. Sadly these days most Pentathletes are simply strong swimmers who add in the other sports.
@melodiclogic99043 жыл бұрын
i think that is the problem with events like the pentathlon, or the decathlon. i believe that events like the biathlon and even the triathlon are focused events, and you have to be fairly good at all of them to get a medal, but once you’re getting 5,7,10 different sports (and i mean different) sports in a row, unless you’re a sporting robot you’re not going to be amazing at every single one at the same consistency. you get a sport where the fastest times in 1 or 2 sports is the most important, and everyone else is just average in all the others. hence why you have a woman who was first at the time, then got on a horse and completely fluffed her chances and took it out on a horse.

I’ve ridden horses a time or two but I am by no means a horse-riding expert, especially in jumping and show. However, one of the first things I was taught was to not panic and remain calm if the horse spooks. Horses can pick up on the mood and emotions of the rider. And since she decided to lose all composure while trying to “calm” the horse, it’s no wonder it was worked up. I understand that it’s a frustrating and disappointing situation. But she did nothing to make the situation any better. Honestly I highly doubt the horse even felt the “punch.” I am NOT saying it’s okay and still think it’s unprofessional for a rider and crew that call themselves the best in the world. In my opinion her trial should have been stopped once it was seen that both she and the horse were losing it, before either one of them wound up hurt.

This has gotten to a ridiculous hypocritical point. Horses used to fight in wars. Mike Tyson in his prime could not hurt a horse by hitting g in the croup. We have become a bunch of Sissies. Oh no, that takes some effort. ‘I better sit here, watch tv and complain if a horse is made to poop while running”.

After seeing the first video about this I did some checking and come to find out this horse had already went one round with another rider not long before Annika had to ride. The horse Saint Boy was already stressed by another BAD ride, the heat, to much garbage gear these people don't understand the use of and misuse and being overworked in between rounds. These people need reg. lessons with a trainer and should lease or buy their own horses if they want to continue in this type of event. This horse is ruined for jumping now and had that "trainer" done HER JOB she would have seen the clear warning signs this horse was in distress. The original Pentathlon like the 3 day eventing was an Olympic sport where only military Calvary riders originally could compete once the military converted away from horses that is when everyday people started to be allowed to do it. Only officers were issued permanent mounts hence why riders only get 20 minutes with horse (they were expected to be able to ride any horse if your horse died under you in battle you would grab closest loose horse and continue to fight grounded Calvary was dead man ) But let’s face it only officers carried swords and fencing isn’t really how Calvary riders use their swords. I think and I don’t know how pentathlon is scored that the horse portion needs to be made the highest scoring part. from what I watched it looked like they practiced and were good at the other four parts and then jumped on a horse like it was their first time. I really felt sorry for the poor horses that had to put up with in my opinion beginner riders. In no way should most of those people been attempting to jump that big of fences.

She didn't punch it in any way. She is clearly pushing him away from the fence and her as he backs into her and the fence. 600kg of horse reversing over a fence and a person is extremely dangerous. I've seen many people push horses away from them like this so it's common and it in no way hurts the horse. Coach gets into trouble for pushing a horse off her but rider is freely allowed to whip horse repeatedly. This horse should not have been supplied to the rider. It's the sort of horse only one person can handle plus it was too 'oated' up and should have been exercised prior to being given to the rider. This is an incredibly dangerous situation that could have resulted in the death or injury of the rider. I won't be watching the Olympics ever again after this complete failure of justice or sense.

I'm not a horse person, but watch dressage for the beauty of the horses. Why is it that this woman continued when the horse was clearly distressed? Why did the coach not intervene? Every time I see a rich little blond princess cry because real life hit her in the face, I get this warm feeling of satisfaction.

@@KFrost-fx7dt well you sir, have no idea what you’re talking about. This “princess girl” has been training her whole life to compete in the Olympic, so when it all goes to shit, then yeah no wonder her emotions take over… You have probably never ridden a horse in your whole life, so you are definitely not qualified to talk about horse riding. Good day, idiot

@@KUTITUPELI I rode horses from age 9 to 17. I rode Western. No horse hs ever made me cry (maybe because I wasn't a spoilt rich English rider?) It is an animal. It is idiotic to take personally what an animal does. They are unpredictable, just like people can be. Also it is idiotic to cry in sports. This girl needs to quit competing and take up a different hobby, she's embarrssing herself.

The whole incident is shocking. She has no control and loses it. Cruelty witnessed by all.I am glad this is being dealt with.

You think the horse felt that "punch"? I've sucker punched my horse for charging me, this is a thousand pound animal with teeth and sharp hooves, that smack was nothing.
