Speaking of young horses, would be interesting to see how you get young horses used to working on their hooves, or a first trimming/shoeing!
@tatorkator99013 жыл бұрын
Ideally you would start them as foals. Correctly trimming their feet sets their bodies and joints up for success. They will be used to it from an early age. You gotta set them up for success early teach them while their small and impressionable, don't wait till they've made up their mind.

I have learned that horses have an amazing ability to at times figure out how to beat nearly anything we humans do.
@DaniesHere3 жыл бұрын
People that are still here and saying that this man is hurting the horses. He *studied* to be ABLE to work with animals/horses. The process is similar with humans. If humans had hooves, they would need cleaned up and trimmed (trust me when I say, it does NOT hurt the horse and it is really pleasant for the horse since it won't have hard time walking. Yes, not taking care of horses hooves can lead to a big discomfort and can lead to death too! /Ok, I know that I got a bit out of hand on the last part but think of it this way. You don't help your horse with its hooves and then a pebble gets in it, you once more don't care about it and soon it hits the nerve system in the horse, leading to infection AND death. This is why Horses NEED to have their hooves taken care of so ya'll can shut it and go study before judging and talking nonsense./)

Looks really nice. I’m in the hunter/jumper realm of shoeing and deal with many off the track TB. You were perfect in your assessment. I always wondered why you don’t block or set your nails after nailing? But I believe you answered when you said you didn’t want your nails to hang on so tight to cause damage? On my shoe “”pullers”” I usually switch to a tiny nail and very small clenches. It does keep down on the damage. Keep up the great work!!
@maverick_vet3 жыл бұрын
good to see another farrier on here. the "tiny nail and very small clenches" was what I was going for but apparently didn't work. I use capewell's slim 5 on him. to answer your clinch block question, I only do that when nailing up hand-mades, with store bought stuff the nails and shoes are manufactured to fit perfectly together. hard to explain over writing but yeah...

My dad would have told the Ferrier to get the other shoes off and let the horse unshoed. He worked and train with Morgans and a few other breeds that ran in harness racing, and he would ‘bench’ the horse from racing. Sometimes he said they would get their shoe(s) off if their gait is off, an undetected abscess in side the hoof he found when his riding horse took her shoe off. If could because he’s young and don’t like the shoes or something else. But what do I know, I just remembered him saying stuff like that.

I was thinking it would def be worth an xray if possible, because a horse would probably not lose it's shoes if it was comfortable, but IDK anything about horses except they're big, expensive and look cool lol

Would this horse ever be a case where you’d recommend not shoeing him once his hoof has grown back in if he’s staunchly anti-shoe? Or would he wear his feet right down to nothing?
@DZrache2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a racing horse, so due to money reasons it's probably either shoes to avoid further hoof damage, or "retirement."
@DZrache2 жыл бұрын
So they wouldn't "wear down to nothing" but constant exposure to moisture from the ground can cause the hoof to soften and deform. It's also a slightly higher infection risk to go shoeless

Great vid! Does the epoxy get in the way of where the hoof would grow back or does the epoxy get removed at some point?
@kayla49093 жыл бұрын
It protects the area till new hoof grows back, don’t take my word for it because I’m not a farrier. But it probably wears off as the hoof regrows. Like painting fingernails maybe? As your nail grows, the polish chips 🤷🏻♀️
@DZrache2 жыл бұрын
It's more like getting a fake nail to be as long as the rest of your natural nails, and filing it down as it grows out

I’m curious what sequence of things you try when a horse repeatedly pulls their shoes. I ask because I used to have a horse who pulled front shoes over and over, eventually winding up with a bowed tendon. My farrier found a solution by putting wide rocker plates on his front feet and grippy full fullered shoes on the rear (but not until after he was seriously injured).
@DataPilot370 Жыл бұрын
And BTW, losing a big chunk of hoof wall is nowhere near as bad as a shoe not coming off and causing a tendon injury!

Why does adding width on the medial side “support” his foot? When does support become leverage? How does a shoe fit outside the width of the foot support anything and act any differently than the ground they stand on?
