Horse logging- A years worth of free timber in a day!

Hi all and thanks again for tuning into our channel. Today we’re heading down to the farm boundary to tackle some pretty tricky logging with 2 of our most experienced horses! Its wet and windy, a little slippery, and the logs are pretty big, but people always underestimate what these little draft horses can do, and in just under an hour the task was complete! Watching from Newfoundland Canada! Love the content. I had my mare out for a run in the snow today hitched in a traditional style sledge like my grandfather used to use. She’s a Morgan / Newfoundland pony cross only about 950 pounds not a draft horse but I have hauled some firewood and hay with her.

I was holding my breath for a sec when you pulled out the hung up tree. You were lucky that it snaped😅. So much fun watching you and your horses. Amazing how strong these cobs are. I use mine only on the carriage....till now 😊

Here I am on the other side of the world and found myself doing the same chore for 2 days last week! I had a number of down or dead or leaning trees along the bush on my north hayfield and I spent 2 days cutting and skidding them up to the yard for firewood and sawlog (oak, ash, maple) using 3 abreast as it is a 1/2 mile uphill skid and I was hauling the largest pieces I could to save trips. I put a video up. I do not envy you the steep slope or the mud! I live in the Oak Ridges Moraine, and we have hills too and currently with mild weather we have mud as well. I'm supposed to be for hire logging out a cedar swamp, but it has not frozen, so I'm puttering at other things...and watching youtube videos lol.

Very helpful about the sledge. I have 4 acres woodland in S Yorks and 2 ponies. Not done anything with it yet, need fencing so the ponies can stay there. It's on a slope with the track at the top 😅 we'll see.. not much ash.. I have ash saplings growing where not required in the garden at home.. can't get rid of em now

Hi! We don't generally put our horses into real work until they are 4/5 years old when they are mentally and physically fit to do the job. I would suggest taking things right back to your desensitisation work, then turning them away to mature for a while
