Truely an amazing horse Dessie. One thing is a fact you don't see the top horses of today giving lumps of weight in top handicaps, n romping home over various distances ( from 2 mile - 3.5 miles, in any ground. Thats why I believe Dessie is the greatest, Bless you Dessie x

Arkle was the greatest. Denman carried top weight to win Hennessy Gold Cup which was excellent, Kauto Star was always kept to conditions races. Dessie was some horse.

Simon Sherwood was such a great jockey. He gave Dessie the confidence to run & jump as he wanted while being able to judge the pace of a race brilliantly. Dessie+Simon were the perfect combination.

Formula1Madx A stunning ride by Sherwood. He didn’t need to pick the whip up on the run in, even though it was so very tight. On an unrelated note to an extent, that Sherwood rarely resorted to using his whip, one wonders whether they’re entirely necessary in racing today? For me, whips should only be used to correct a horse, or just urge on by flicking it in the horses line of sight. I believe that if racing is to survive then hands and heels racing is the way forward, as Sherwood shows in this vid if your horse is good enough it will win.

My darling Dessie who I watched win so many races on TV and even whispered in his ears at Whitsbury Manor when I visited. I still have the limited edition print (high 5) of him beating Pegwell Bay. So looking forward to seeing you on ITV4 tomorrow whilst bringing back such treasured memories in 1989. I will also think of Elvis who sang Memories.

The Martell Chase fall apart, Desert Orchid's 1988/89 season is by a long way the most impressive I've seen a NH horse put up. A pipe opener over 2m5 at Wincanton, the Tingle Creek when it was still a Limited Handicap over 2m giving lumps of weight away, the King George 3m, The Victor Chandler when it was a Limited Handicap over 2m giving 22lbs to the very decent Panto Prince, this race the Gainsborough, again a Limited Handicap, giving over a stone to Pegwell Bay over 3m 110yds then the Gold Cup itself over 3m 2f. Yes, there have been very good horses since like Best Mate and Kauto Star but they were never asked to show that versatility over different trips or giving stones away to rivals. It's a shame trainers seem so afraid to run their horses as often these days, everything is just aimed for the big day at Cheltenham and far too many Grade 1s have replaced the good Limited Handicaps of old.

Well said Richard Keogh this really is a season that was unique and totally agree way to many grade 1s where the same horses turn up and same results over and over again. Great performers the modern day stars be but they beat nothing time after time and as soon as they race anything near their equal one is injured or falls and they don't meet again.

What amazes me is post this race he won the Gold Cup went on to land another King George an amazing Racing Post Chase and then an Irish National in little over another 12 months.

I was there that day with my girlfriend, now wife. I have never known a racing crowd go beserk but that day they did, because it finally became obvious that Dessie could win the Gold Cup. And, yes, he was brilliant. You cannot compare different eras, just enjoy what you know and see as it happens. He was, then, the best horse around.

Only 4 runners but all top class. To me this is one of Dessies finest performances. Pegwell Bay (another favourite of mine) was up and coming star and had mopped up some classy handicaps before this. So much so I have a Max Brandrett print of the 2 of them jumping the last hanging in my front room.

One of my favourite races. So glad to see it finally on KZbin. This was an amazing performance by Dessie giving lumps to the very classy Pegwell Bay.

Red Rum was great, 3 wins and 2 x 2nd in the National is marvellous, but lucky he didn't have the extra weight to carry that Dessie so often did- especially in 1973 which Crisp. would have won but for the weight handicap.
