I remember this race well. The trainer or owner of urgent request made a huge bet a minute or two before post time.

I think(?) it was $120k to Win $90K to Place. I recall keeping the L.A. Times article on this owner who was a casino owner in Britain. And routinely made big bets.

I remember right after the race Al Michaels noting that someone had dropped an entire bank account on Urgent Request after his odds dropped dramatically just before the start. Hadn't heard the story behind it. Thanks for sharing.

My mare (in my profile picture) was sired by Urgent Request. She was unnamed and unnraced, but I called her Bella. I lost her to cancer (grey melanoma) last year at 20 years old. Miss her so much. :(
