I would be concerned that this lady lashes out when things don't suit her. This wouldn't be an ideal situation to put an abused, or any defenseless animal into. The ideal response from her would have been to go away, get her finances and trainor requisites together, then come back and present a comprehensive picture, all while maintaining a calm demeanor. It was for the best that the team declined her application. It isn't easy making these types of calls, but you have to trust the staff's better instincts in situations like this. They have dealt with so many horses and people that they just know when the match isn't right. The horses must be protected first with wishes and wants following.

I think it’s really good that you showed what happens when it’s not the right person. 100% that was the best decision to make. How nasty the woman became to me shows that everyone did the right thing in saying no: if you can’t afford a $500 adoption fee you can’t afford a horse. That’s so cheap for any horse!

Where are they going to come up with the 5000 a year minimum to properly maintain a horse? Meds, injuries, tack, food, fencing, stall equipment, etc.

@@penniewyatt9391 Exactly! They aren’t cheap last thing you want is to see that animal back in a auction In a state because they couldn’t afford to sort him or her. I have my shire cross and a highland pony I spend a fortune on them. But that’s what is necessary as a owner.

I heard the comment about how they drove from so far away and planned to take at least two untrained, I mean that right there is a Red flag to me when they have to go into detail about "How far they drove" Excuse me... untrained horses if Im correct don't have adoption fees, because of the work needed, sounds like they wanted a couple "Free, young horses" I glad Horse Plus turned them away, they seem like people who might sell at auction if things don't go their way. Lives saved by being selective.

The lady who got refused clearly romantizied bonding with wild horses. It's a lot of work and it requires experience to do sucessfully. She would most likely experience alot of heartbreak in the end and maybe even send the horses back to auctions... So good on you guys for standing your ground on this! I mean, I also want to gentle a horse.. a neighbor of mine gave me 2 little ponies. Both have been handled but one is just w I l d. I am working on it. I'm no expert, but I think the fact that she has already been handled makes me think I can try to pet her. It's been like 2 weeks and shes already getting way way way better with me. Just from me giving her hay and being near her quietly, letting her come to me. I have created a bond with my horse. But he was already a friendly trained guy. Belonged to my old neighbor where I used to love. I love him to pieces. I now have 3 ponies, 1 horse, and a LOT of other animals. But we can afford it. I think that's what matters. And that we take good care of them.

Of course money is a major factor when beeing responsible for any animal. My bunny had a tooth issue and the operation costed me 450$. If an animal gets sick the bills get quite high pretty fast, especially if it is a horse. I rescued a cat, several bunnies, two cows and a horse. The horse is by far the most expensive pet. So it is only responisble to make sure adopters can finance the animal.

so true horses are expensive especially if you keep them at home you have to have a minimum of 2, horses need other horses they are herd animals and the interaction is so important for their mental well being. it is against the law in europe to keep a horse without another horse. should be made law everywhere. so yes very expensive. one of mine cost 10 000 in 6 months on vet bills

Thats one of the things I really admire about HPHS being a full life shelter. Many people get a few horses. Then they cannot afford them. The horses get in starved condition. They cannot afford to have them humanely euthanized. HPHS and the sister farms will take these poor souls and either fatten them up or humanely end their lives. You cannot be in the horse world without this option. There are not enough good homes with the money to maintain the horse until the end of their natural lives. Too many people are breeding to many horses too.

@@ttwillow9073 horses in the USA are used to make money in the rodeos etc if they stopped giving away saddles and thousands of dollars for winning and just gave them a rosette and a bag of horse feed then less poor people hoping to cash in at local rodeos would not have the incentive to get a horse amateur sports here in europe cost us a lot of money and we get nothing back but the thrill of winning and being proud of our horses

I was one of those baby girls who loved horses with all my heart before I was even talking well. I grew up in the city, then when I was 15, I lucked into my first horse. The barn I kept her in was owned by a race horse trainer. He brought out this TB mare, he said had lost her baby....Now I think she was just off the track, Anyhow he paid me 25.00 to feed and water her, muck out her stall and brush her. He supplied all the grain and hay. I thought to myself...I can get paid for doing what I love to do? This was 1969. Before this I always had plans of becoming a horse vet. Istead, I ended up graduating early out of HS at the end of my Junior year and totally immersing myself in the horse world until the end of 1992. I wasn't even interested in dating anymore. I did not want children or a husband. It was all about horses for me! Now, years later, I know much more about biology. About anatomy and physiology. About how the nerves run. Believe me, riding a horse is torture to the horse. There are BETTER ways to have a loving relationship with a horse besides riding, showing, jumping, racing, competing, breeding, buying and selling them. Spend some time educating yourself on Google. It is a real eye opener.

The cohesiveness of your organization is exemplary. Everyone understands the organization ethics and intentions so everything from care, medications, vetting adopters is uniform. The reason horses end up in the slaughter pipeline is irresponsible ownership and you take great care and responsibility to adopt to owners with the right purpose and integrity. Kudos. Glad you mentor other organizations to replicate your process.

I'm glad you showed a horse that was not adopted. I was worried these horses might be going some place they dont belong. But you proved me wrong. Thank you. I am grateful you are protective of these horses. I think the family just didn't want to pay for a horse at all. Do a little scamming. The fear that the horse would of lived with, and the abuse, back to pipeline, bc they would have been too ashamed to bring the horses back to you! I want a horse for my granddaughter, but I dont have the ways or means to care for the horse. I'm on a limited budget, and thats ok. I accept that. When I get my health back, I would just love to take a day trip to your place, let her see the ranch. She says she wants to work there when she gets older, I would like to let her see the place and see if she would like the work. Also, it is away to get her to focus on school. So thank you for all your work and not adopting out to those people.

Hi there, your comment really resonated with me for several reasons. Of course, I completely agree with you that the horses need to go to people who are capable of caring for them and providing them a loving home. Not to someone so easily set off. When my daughter was little and thru to her mid-teenage years, I had her in riding lessons. She has loved horses all of her life and it was the best thing I ever did for her. It taught her hard work, caring for another living creature (aside from our dog) which taught her animal husbandry, hoof care, feeding, medicating, etc. and all of the 'other stuff' that comes with being responsible for a pony/horse aside from the fun stuff, meaning the actual riding itself. Her lessons were 45 minutes long when she first started (about 6yo) and we'd be there for a good hour prior to her lesson and another afterwards. She learned patience, relaxing herself, focus and dedication. As she got older, I strongly believe that having that bond with her horse kept her out of the mall, or just being a couch potato, etc. The rule I had was if school falls behind, the riding lesson goes and she can spend that 3 hours making up for it with school work. I never did have to enforce that rule, haha. She met a bunch of kids her age and skill level who had the same interests, etc. I had a spine/spinal cord injury when she was 10yo, so although I managed to get her to lessons, etc. there were times when she was pretty much 'on her own' once we got out there. It was not easy pulling myself thru wood chips and sand in a wheelchair, but we did it, haha. It was good for her and I too. I'm a single-parent with the one child so it has been her and I against the world since we lost her dad when she was one year old. I'm a firm believer in animals, especially horses, building both physical, emotional strength and the empathy and compassion that develops is always a good thing too! She is now 21yo and on her own. I have no concerns about her doing what she needs to do to get where she wants to be. She's a determined kiddo and I firmly believe a lot of that independence and determination was learned by spending time with horses. It may sound silly, but I strongly believe it. Best wishes to you. The fact that the denied adopter was hoping to leave with more than one…and wanted to leave with something…😬 Nope. A rescue’s first priority is in the best interest of the animal. They owe you nothing no matter how far you’ve traveled. Guilty parties can’t stop talking in a narcissistic way.

I’ve adopted many animals and I’ve never ever had the thought “I just want to leave with something”, I’ve constantly worried that I might choose the ‘wrong’ animal for me whether it’s because I fall in love with how they look or require more experience or resources than I have. I’m that person who has to go away and think about it, because I truely believe that you get an animal for their lifetime - so any behavioural issues, medical expenses, mismatches in my skill level & training required etc. becomes my responsibility too. That might mean if I end up with a horse that I’m not confident training or riding myself, that I have someone there to help me with those things, educate myself as much as possible by attending courses or clinics etc; so that my animal can live its best most fulfilling life with me. I’m not someone who will give an animal up or sell it down the road because I made a poor choice in the beginning. For this reason, when getting an animal if I’m even slightly hesitant or unsure, I’ll either leave and think about that decision in depth or say ‘as much as I love this animal, they just aren’t the best fit’ and keep looking for one that will suit my experience level & lifestyle. If someone told me they didn’t think I was the right fit for a horse, I’d be thankful that they were looking out for the best interest of the animals in their care & for myself - it would show that they are invested in finding me a horse that IS a great fit. The fact that they ‘just wanted to leave with something’ sounds completely dodgy to me already, then going from one unhandled horse (which is already a huge financial/time commitment by itself) to wanting to take 2 & THEN not wanting to look at horses that are more suitable for your experience level just because they have a reasonable adoption fee, is a lot of glaring red flags when added up. I can totally understand not budgeting an extra $500 on a horse & not having it then & there, I’ve had to budget for animals before, especially since it sounded like they travelled from quite far away which gets expensive by itself with accommodation & petrol costs - but for myself, I know id still really want to look at other horses the trainers & people who know the horses best, are recommending, even if I didn’t have the money then and there. I’d still want to try them out & if I did find a suitable match, I’d could bring up the money issue then, once I knew I was genuinely interested in that specific horse & that it was a good match for me.

I was thrilled to see this . Such a beautiful Arabian. As I so loved my Arabian which I had for 27 yrs 3 months and 6 days. She was 2 months short of her 33rd year. In those years she had two foals and I did buy another. Also I adopted another. What a life long commitment. My heart goes out to you each week. Horse rescue brings me to tears. Fir the joy they were rescued and on occasion when the last act of kindness is given. Tears that they are no longer suffering. Bless you all.

The subsequent emails from the wanna-be adopters verified that you made the right decision in refusing them as adopters. I'm giggling because their abusive emails to you justified your decision to eliminate them as adopters. They are abusive defensive individuals and they are exactly the types of people we all want to avoid in our lives, whether they are potential adopters, neighbors, acquaintances, employees, friends, etc. WELL DONE! You continue to surprise me with life excellent lessons throughout your videos. [I'd love to see more of these rejected adopters with blurred faces. These are lessons for ALL of us to see what types of people to avoid in our lives. They are not a good fit for horses, and they are not a good fit for people either.]

Purchasing a horse is the smallest amount of money ever spent. Many people 'love horses' but don't really have a clue--have seen it many times where people become horse hoarders and just become overwhelmed and everything falls apart--at the detriment of the horse!

Once you bought or adopted a horse/donkey you also need to be able to pay medical bills, food, riding equipement etc. It will never stop. These precious souls have been throug enough and need a loving, caring and FOREVER home. I think you are right saying that the financial state is your concern, you have done a lot of effort to save them and get them a new home and you want to minimise the chance that people want to get rid of them when the going gets tuff or even worse neglect them because of lack of money/skills. I can understand that people are disappointed when they have been told that there is no match. But take in consideration the explanation of HP, they want the best for the horse and thus also for you because what you want doesn't always mean it's the right thing.

These people gave me red flags when they were on screen. They reminded me of the lady I got my gelding from and what I know now, I would've ran. But, I did get an awesome horse and now he is 12 and my partner in crime. Yes, he was a foal at one week. I won't do it again, lol. My next equine will be an endurance prospect, maybe mule or Arab.

i did Long-Distance and Competitive Trail Riding with two horses growing up. i had an Arabian/Thoughrobred mare who was hot and a lot of horse, but did great and was so fun to ride. my "heart horse" and the best horse i've ever had though was a barely 14.0 Arabian/Welsh Pony mare. She was fearless and tackled any hill, obstacle or water crossing like it was nothing. And she would go as long as you asked her to and beyond. i passed out on her from an undiagnosed kidney infection on a 75-mile Competitive trail course and Sham followed the correct trail at a steady trot onto where the next judge was hidden and could help me. i will always praise that Arab/Welsh cross. Shammari did everything i ever asked of her in our 27 too short years together. We said our goodbyes for now a few months after her 32 birthday. Sham is now always is a thought and a heartbeat away and sometimes that's not close enough. i wish for you the same kind of bond and adventures with the horse or mule that chooses you!

I volunteered at an animal shelter. The head said; “If you can’t pay for the adoption fee, how can you pay for their medical bills?” Also, like others pointed out, they were really inexperienced with the horse. Just how they tried to force interaction. Green doesn’t work well with green. A great example is Wild Horse, Wild Ride when an extremely green rider practically ruined a mustang due to her inexperience. It’s sad, but it’s true. And two hours? Wow, that’s just disrespectful to you and your time.

I'll never understand forcing an interaction with any animal. Much less a completely unworked horse. That would scare the animal and it could end up being dangerous for the person if the horse feels it needs to defend itself

I have fostered dogs for various local rescue groups. Going through the process of getting pups healthy, dealing with any temperament or training issues, screening applications, talking to prospective adopters & finally reaching the “meet & greet” takes time & dedication. If I ever feel like it isn’t the right match, I have to explain that difficult decision to the adopter. That part doesn’t always go well, but I/we put our hearts & souls into these 4 legged charges and, in the end, it’s our responsibility to make sure every effort is made to get that “perfect home”❤️ Keep doing what you’re doing!!❤️😁❤️

Congratulations to you and your staff for making the correct decision for the horses! My husband, (non-horse person of the family) watched the video and pointed out that if these people had a trainer lined up they would have been talking about him/her and the method they used in their training program (a question you might ask in these kinds of situations). The first red flag for me was when the lady kept her hand out almost in front of the grain bucket when trying to get the Arabian mare to come to her! That doesn't work with any unhandled horse, let alone a sensitive Arabian! To the person who didn't want to leave without a horse, get over it-this isn't Walmart where you can just grab something off the shelf and leave, even there you have to pay something! Addressing the abusive emails: I am so tired of people using the idea that you shouldn't judge to whine about discrimination and shame others into giving them what they want, to me it has become an evil twisting of scripture and it needs to stop!! Don't allow that kind of behavior to make you feel guilty for your decision!

*THANK YOU* for standing your ground on the adoption denial. i've seen firsthand (twice) what can happen when an overzealous beginner had to have THAT horse. In the first case, the flashy but green golden Palomino bolted on a competitive 4-H trail ride in the Cascades and plummeted down the side of a mountain, rolling and only stopping when she became wedged up-side-down in a v-shaped tree. She was Euthanized there in the tree and her young rider was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The second was a teen and 4-H competitor and friend of mine who was babysitting. She saddled up her charge's pony then saddled the dad's massive Appy stallion and took the little girl for what was to be a quick ride. What happened next no one knows for sure. They were riding along a train Tressel when a train came. They believe the stallion froze and that Noel couldn't get him to move and that the pony mare stayed by the stallion. All five (Buckwheat the pony was pregnant and due in two months) were struck by the train and either died instantly or were hit by passing cars when they fell off the tressal and onto the roadway below. It's human nature to try to be bigger than your britches (as my mom would say, bless her) when you really, REALLY want something. So much praise to your young staff for standing strong and using their Intuition as well as their knowledge with this adoption. They very well could have saved a life or two. Keep doing what you're doing so well, all, and thank you for what you do!

Its a lot of work to train a horse from unhandled. The hours put in alone will take most of your time, More than a full time job and if you have a job to go to it makes the process even longer, you'll need to back track the training to catch up.

Great video. Totally agree with you to refuse the adoption, the abusive emails did nothing to doubt your decision. Is there any protocol for making sure the potential riders are in proportion to the frame and size of the adopted horse . A few other people on here have commented that the family who adopted Dublin were all planning on riding him and some of them were very curvy.

I have wondered the same. Local trainers say a horse can comfortably carry 12% of their weight, so a 1,000 lb horse would be comfortable with a 120 lb rider. It's not set in concrete but there are other things to consider too, especially the fit of the saddle, I rode English when I was a young girl but now it's Western, for the comfort of the horse and the rider. Just a quick note that kind of burns me the wrong way, a guy who does trail rides has a 250 lb. maximum weight per rider and he doesn't weigh anyone. My tri-color paint "Is Real" was a 15.5 gelding, a great pleasure to ride, a very nice smooth gait, he did have one vice, if a commercial truck drove by him he would bolt, it was a flight instinct, boy it sure got the blood pumping on me! "Is Real" was a throw away horse, he got loose and was hit by a tractor trailer truck, it stripped the fur and skin off of his face, he was blinded in one eye and skiddish after the accident, the owner was going to put him down...that is why our family had him.

I just sometimes wonder about heavy weight of people and tender horse backs. Do you have limits? We do have them in Germany, at least people mention it often and think about it.

I think it's generally accepted in the US that a horse can carry up to 20% of its weight. Some breeds with longer backs, less substance, might carry less. Other breeds with shorter backs, and stouter builds can maybe handle more. And a larger, but very experienced rider will ride more "lightly" than a smaller, inexperienced rider. But that's the general consensus.

She sounds like a entitled individual. 2 hours late, wanted a free horse, did not have the experience or a trainer, she didn't think she needed to follow the protocol outlined in your guidelines. Any horse that ends up in her care will most likely end up a failure and no horse deserves that. She can blame you and your staff all she wants but everyone watching can see right through the BS. Horse Plus, you did the right thing when turning someone away. It’s also about their safety and that of the horse. I think you handled it beautifully. It’s sad when people get upset when they are turned away. For one thing they were two hours late for their appointment. That sure showed their irresponsibility from the beginning of their appointment.

As far as I'm concerned you have concern about a horse or horses is very smart on your behalf because they came from a horrible situation and you definitely don't want them to go back into something where a person can't take care of them and they won't let you know. If they can't afford the medical bills, the fee. Pets require responsible people if adoptees are not responsible and attack your organization, that makes things worse for them ( adopters ). From what I learned about getting horses. Is that buying the horse is the cheapest part of getting a horse. If you can’t afford a mirror $500 Adoption fee to get that perfect horse for your family. You shouldn’t be looking into getting a horse until you’re financially stable. It didn’t sound like that lady was financially stable. What if that horse cut his leg in the trailer during transportation? What if the horse got sick the next day after getting adopted? If she could’ve paid $500 in that moment to get a horse then what will make me think she could handle $1000 vet bill.

I had a unhandled Arabian. I was also very green . But I did have very experienced people to help me with her . I showed her in 4-H shows and she did very well . I worked with her for two years before showing her . Arabians are definitely a special breed of horse . I love the energy, intelligence and sensitivity .

I completley agree with your decisions you take, your sole reason for rehoming these beautiful horses is that they find a loving and secure home as they have already been through. Thinking about animal long-term care and welfare is what your organization is based on. We have many animals in our home, and our adopted cat, last year's vet bills (surgeries, blood, test, vet visits) were over 4 thousand plus. He needs special care and food to help him live a good life. This cat was only 60 to adopt. When adopting or buying a pet or animal, it's for life, and they rely on us for their care and warfare.

We adopted a “free” dog last year…we were blessed to have him for four months before he crossed the bridge…he cost us 5k in vet costs and about 5k to carpet our house because our concrete floors where to dangerous for him. The “free” dog cost so much in the end but we would do it all over again.

Love how they let us experience an adoption that they denied... it was clearly too much for that adopter! She needs to understand that a nice level 1 or 2 horse can TOTALLY make the bond she was looking for...I mean most horses don't live with their trainer forever yet will totally connect with their owner. A wild horse, an Arabian none the less, could leave her in total frustration and that's never a good outcome. I mean, especially at first, get a horse u can handle and show off to your friends and family instead of handing them binoculars and pointing to ur wild Arabian far off in the field. Even halter training is no easy feat, with a novice it could be downright dangerous. There are always training tweaks and new things to teach an already rideable horse to gain experience and grow that bond. I mean, do a join up with a level 1 horse and you will be just as smitten and likely so will they.

I rode an Arabian as a beginner. Not brand new, but still very green. He was part of the deal my riding instructor had with a leaser. He was spirited, stubborn and spooky. He was also a great horse and I loved him. I learned a lot from him but I also knew that he was a lot for me to handle , even as trained as he was. I can’t imagine starting him as my first horse.
