Jaw Tooth, those tall Hopper cars are full of coal and taken to the NS Sandesky Coal yard to be off load, when they unload these cars, they lift up the entire car and flip the car upside down and the coal goes down a shut to conveyor belts and then taken to be loaded on board ship or stored in the yard facility. I saw video about this about 2 weeks ago, Very fascinating how they do this.

As stated the tall gons are old woodchip cars used for hauling trash or construction/demolition debris. Midwest Railcar MWCX has a bunch of new ones floating around. There's a bunch of ex-BN ones with various reporting marks too. The WFRX SD70MACs at least are being used rather than sitting in storage while under BNSF ownership. Wish they would have kept them, it would be a break from all the GEs we see out here in WI/MN.

@12:00 you mentioned that train had foreign power working it. That particular engine, #8909 WFRX (whoever that is) looked like an older BNSF engine now working under the WFRX banner. I guess that company are contracting engine power to NS, CSX and BNSF to help in the work. Oh, I just looked it up, Wells Fargo Rail formerly First Union Rail Corporation and GE Capital Rail Services under among other things a Sale/LeaseBack agreement. @25:34 "DPU, I see you, and you too"!!! @31:03 Could one say that these two tank cars are "Flux Capacitors"??? Needless to say I don't think that you will see that train get to 88 MPH here!!! I wonder just how many Gigawatts of power does it take to move a train like that?? 😅😅😅😅 @35:07 Now that is the first time I have ever seen an engineer in a DPU!! Now that is worth waving at!!! And he is a "Honkie" too @35:12!!! Way to Go Driver!!!

As I was watching all those tank cars on that last train I couldn't help but notice a lot of 7070XX numbers. I thought, wouldn't it be cool if I saw 707070. Then I spotted it, I was happy. Then you panned with it, I was happier. Great minds think alike.

This may be buried down in the replies - but here goes ~ the large high-side gondolas ( "The Bay Line") are old wood chip hoppers from the 80's. The Bay Line is / was - the "Atlanta and St. Andrew's Bay". The original reporting reporting marks would have been ASAB - The Bay Line.

A great day. Go down to Altoona where they build the trains to go up to the curve in the yards. The railroad museum is down the and is very interesting. I didn't realize the curve was so important during WW II. It had US troops stationed there to prevent sabotage that would shut down our rail system. We drove up to Gallitzen and watched the trains come out of the tunnel they pass through at the top of 5he bend. All in all an interesting and fun day. Trains, history, and scenery what more do you need

Thank you for this additional video of your stop at Horseshoe Curve on the Norfolk Southern's Pittsburg Line on 24 June 2023, Jaw Tooth! This video had a nice variety of trains going around Horseshoe Curve. From the angle that you were taking the video clips, I could not tell whether that coal train going toward Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was loaded with coal or not loaded with coal. There did not appear to be a hump of coal showing above the top of the car to indicate that the car was loaded with coal. I have a question that you or someone who reads this comment can answer. I have noticed, in all the videos that I have seen of trains at Horseshoe Curve, that there is a block building with a chimney sitting between the fence and the tracks. What is the purpose of that block building? Was it used in by-gone days by switch tenders who would through switches and make sure that the switches were cleared of snow in the winter?

The train going toward Pittsburgh is most likely not full of coal. I do believe the cold typically comes from West Virginia, through Pittsburgh, and east around the curve and then onto Power plants

We have a train depot here in grand rapids michigan on plainfield ave and leonard that has been a restaurant for decades... super popular and great food... i've been there about 30 times. i keep kidding the owner opertor Rick about the time his tip jar was stolen by a customer who never comes there anymore... we all laugh as i put another dollar in the tip jar.
