This video was serendipity! My 7-year-old QH cowbred gelding had just completed two months of cowhorse training. He will put his nose on a cow, follow it all day long, and turn him back either direction like a champ...BUT when it comes to gate work, he doesn't want anything to do with it. Roots at the nose and does everything he can to escape. This video made me realize he just isn't ready for the pressure of 5-6 cows coming at him at full speed plus the added pressure of fancy maneuvers needed to work the gate. Thank you, Larry. I appreciate your wisdom SO much

I’m a western and English dressage trainer with very little interest in working cattle, EVERYTHING YOU SAY IN THIS VIDEO MAKES SO MUCH SENSE FOR ANY DISCIPLINE !!! I hope people follow your advice.

I love love how you explain things I'm not a idiot but you make it really make since, I wish I had you at my disposal to pick your brain. Alot of times surprisingly I'm doing things right but putting it all together is a hole other thing like proper equipment etc... When to use what etc alot of times I just don't have the whole formula. So I'm going to be watching your videos alot. I mostly do barrels trails chase cows, but they all need the basic stuff you really try to drill into our heads. Again, Thank You!!!!!

If you have limited pasture space, can you keep your cowhorse with your cows? Or will this make them less willing to work the cows?
@ltrocha

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.

I totally agree with you! My mare was a working ranch horse and she probably knows more about cows than I do (lol) . I wouldn’t be surprised if she kicked over into working cow horse mode with me hanging on for dear life 😎 if I took her out to a roping or cutting event.

So true, people can snuff out that great natural instinct some horses have to be curious and "chase". It's one thing if a horse never had that, but if a horse, as a youngster, likes to go towards and herd other animals (goats, dogs, geese, cows, anything), then recognise that as a huge asset and don't ruin it. Don't turn fun for the horse into a chore, or worse, a punishment

Yep made that mistake taking a 3 year old to push cows along a road with fence down both sides so it was tight and a dog kept turning cows back at us. Scared her to death of cows now. And I made the mistake of trying to push her up and turn the bi*tches around. Take a while to get her over that 🙁

I do not like sorting or team penning, nor running a calf down the side of a wall ... real ranchers do everything possible to avoid running their cattle. ... whoever dreamed this crap up needs their head examined, imho

Yes, the way a cow is worked in reined cow horse competition, is something you would never do in real world situations on a ranch.

I'm sure you have a good reason for using draw reins and tie downs
@ltrocha

Hi John, I seldom use draw reins or a tie down. I'm riding this filly with a German martingale. I'll use it for an occasional ride if the horse gets too stiff. It's a good tool if used correctly.
