This is an excellent demonstration of the proper use of the german martingale! Mr. Trocha is as gifted at communicating technique with people as he is with applying technique to horses. Certainly a rarity in the horse training business. A "must-see" for those who "must know".

I have followed Clinton Anderson for years now and he is awesome. But sometimes I have a hard time finding a way to train a horse givin that I dont have as much experience as him. I appreciate your teaching on this simple piece of equipment. It made teaching my horse a lot easier on her proper collection during her turns. Thank you so much for a different perspective that has been so helpful.

I train my horse in dressage but am blown away by how helpful western riders are and how akin they are to dressage training, in many ways better and with more feeling it seems.

Oh my gosh, I love you. My arab has been sooooo naughty this week. I am doing an english pleasure class this sunday and of course NOW she decides she doesnt want to keep her head down and collect. My friends have been telling me to use a german martingale and I have been avoiding using one, but after completely breaking down crying today from frustration, I am going straight to my local tack store tomorrow and picking one up!!!! Thank you soo much, you're video is super helpful

Very useful info. I have been recieving your newsletters for quite sometime and probably been able to apply your training suggestions more than any other trainer than I have encountered. Easy to understand - no frills - just the facts! Thanks for taking your time to help me out!

Use it every ride until your horse is in the habit of responding the way you want. After that, just use it once in a while for a tune up. Larry T.

Thanks Ryan. Actually, I have contacted some of the haters and you know what... most don't even own a horse. As a matter of fact, most are bored teenage girls simply trying to start an argument. Pretty sad.

I just viewed both of the videos and awesome advice, I’ve had it explained to me but until I saw this video it all comes together and explains itself almost like a math formula. Thanks for posting and advice.

@cattlekate It's a great tool in the right situation but if you ride with it outside, make sure it doesn't get snagged in the brush. Larry T.

@Delaucroix so what trainer doesn't know that? It's common knowledge these are training aids that have been used for centuries. You are just looking for a reason to comment.

Hi Mr Trocha, I congratulate you on your very interesting training videos. I wanted to ask if it was possible to use the German Martingale on the mechanical cow as well.

all this work on where the head is, without any concern to where the feet are. The head is a direct result of the back legs. If this horse were allowed to go in a straight line and push forward and over the back , what a difference it would make. The constant banging with your spurs, too much work. Much nicer to use the legs like you do the reins, when you touch him he should respond and keep it, not have to hang on them and constantly need reminding. Learn to stop a horse from your seat and balance. and the constant pulling the rein out to the side, watch the horse every time, fall to the inside, I like a horse that has balance on a turn and can engage his hind quarters and push, not fall on his front end, in a wet situation this can get messy.

Great video. I have a 2yr. old just coming home from his first 30 days. I live and work on a ranch without an arena. Is it OK to use this out checking cows, and longer trail rides? I really enjoy your videos. They are truly helpful.

@slidecrazey , it's risky to use the German martingale with a curb bit. Too much leverage produced. I'd stick with the snaffle. Larry T.
