A while back we had the large animal vet (veterinarian) visit our home. They call this a "house call". He did a general check up on Maggie the horse, which gave us the opportunity to ask lots of questions. This vet was very good and very kind to give us lots of answers. Maggie got her teeth looked at, got some shots and had her feet examined. BTW, does this vet kinda remind you of Sam Elliot?

I know I know Maggie is fine, but I was on the edge of my seat with this exam. I'm so glad she's doing well, and I love and thank your family with my whole heart for caring for her so deeply. (and your other farm critters!!) and your vet kinda can pass for Sam Elliot but for me I saw. . .Anthony Wilford Brimley, credited either as A. Wilford Brimley or Wilford Brimley, an American actor. He appeared in many notable films including The China Syndrome, The Thing, The Natural, Cocoon and The Firm. I loved him in Cocoon, oh well. Again thanks for the share, glad all is well. Be kind, enjoy and love each other!!

Very informative video. I wanted to share something with you as well as anyone else who reads this. Earlier this year (2016) we learned of a very rare condition that can happen to any animal that is intelligent. Cats, dogs, some birds, horses, etc. The animal in question never develops the skills to deal with stress and anxiety and ends up self harming. We, my husband and I, learned of this about 5 days after I had my gallbladder removed. The stress in leading up to the surgery and the day of, me coming home with 5 incisions in me was too much for our cat. We had to rush her to a 24/h animal hospital in our city. She had licked a hole past the skin. That's as far as I will go into details. It was very bad and took over 3 months to heal. She is fine :) A overall happy cat and about to be super excited. To help with her anxiety she has her first 7 foot cat tree. We are going to try and assemble it tomorrow. She helps us (helps lower chronic pains levels in me and husband deal with depression), and we help her. As a family should :)

An update. We got the cat tree together tonight. She has been playing on it while we were putting it together and is still on it after we finished. The cat tree is part of an idea of making an oasis of peace for her to be her. Running, jumping climbing and hunting cat. It makes her very happy.

One other option that the vet did not mention for flies is a fly sheet. Not sure it would be good for her in your area though, because I've heard you mention several times that she likes to scratch on the trees. She might tear it up. Flies are a constant battle for us as well. :( We just had our first frost, so I'm hoping the flies are done here now. Now, I've heard that Equi Spot really isn't worth it. You'll have to try it for yourself to see if it works for you all. There are a few other fly sprays out there that work well. I think the stuff I used was called Dura Max. It seemed to work well. There are also some "natural" concoctions you can whip up. Just stay away from Bronco! You might as well use water. That stuff isn't worth what they charge for it, I don't care how cheap it is! How often are you having her trimmed? I have my girl trimmed every 6 weeks, but the one I had before her had to be trimmed every 4 weeks. (Farrier didn't believe me till she came back in 4 weeks and saw how much growth she had.) The only thing I disagree with your vet about was the shoes. There is TONS of info out there on barefoot horses. The debate between shod and barefoot is on going. ;)
@daddykirbs
@daddykirbs 8 жыл бұрын
+MotherOfManyHorses we love the idea of keeping her barefoot. After these shoes come off we will not shoe her again unless needed. We have the farrier out every 6 weeks. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about fly sprays.

Just remember , if your going to keep anything healthy on that horse it needs to be her feet. trim every 6 weeks. Not every 8 or 10. The feet are the most important thing.

There's something about how the teeth are shaped that tells the age, but I'm not sure. We try to keep Maggie barefoot, but the normal rotation is every 6 weeks I think.

Blake Kirby well mine is about my dog. But I'd need to send pic. Don't think I can on here. I'm debating whether to go to vet to pay 100's of $ and be told it will work itself out. But I don't want to wait if something serious. Basically her left eye has what looks like pool of blood. It doesn't bother her. I'm not sure what happened. It's been a week now. I know. Hard to answer a question without seeing the problem. 😱

I lost two petigree labradors to a horrible death. from butte poison his office shipped out the replacement in a box triple wrapped. they never even said sorry we kiled your dogs. now i see their graves every day when i go see my horse . she's good now butteless worked in two weeks. larry lied larry lies and he makes a hundred bucks on a can of butte.

Hi there! You have a very pretty, lovely horse! Have you ever considered caring for Maggie with holistic and natural methods? For example- using essential oils for fly spray, wounds, illness etc. (being sure to dilute first as they are very potent), keeping her barefoot like horses in the wild, utilizing rocks for strengthening her hooves (rocks also allow a horse's hooves to self trim). Using natural products and methods of care versus traditional medicines and care can greatly improve the quality of Maggie's life and lengthen it too! :) Since caring for our horses naturally they have never been healthier or happier! You are already giving Maggie a more "wild" lifestyle by giving her free reign of your property. I'm sure she loves that! :) There is lots of info on caring for horses naturally all over the internet. Here are some links we have greatly benefited from: www.essentialanimals.com/ kzbin.info (excellent info on essential oils), www.landrevillehoofcare.com/ kzbin.info/door/TdEDAgRME8kI8kLia4geRA (natural hoof trimming), www.thehorseshoof.com/oats1.html thesoulofahorse.com/blog/no-more-poison-life-without-de-wormers/ wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/defaq.html (natural feeding) One more thing that I will mention is, keeping free choice hay in front of a horse is very beneficial to their health but also for greatly reducing a horse's stress. Horses are grazing animals so when they do not have access to grass providing hay is very important in order to keep them at a good weight as well as keep ulcers from arising. There are lots of articles explaining horse ulcers on the web. Also, holistic veterinarians can help a lot as they are into natural care and remedies. It looks like you all love Maggie very much. Very nice to see! :)
