Several years ago I had a mare who was recovering from an injury. As part of the therapy the Vet instructed me to take her for 2 to 3 20 to 30 minute walks, not rides, a day. For my own sake I would just take her for walks on the trail rather than walk her in patterns around the barn area. That way the walks didn't become boring to me. When we'd get back to the barn I'd do some gentle ground work so she didn't get relief as soon as we got home. I was happily surprised at how well she adjusted to not being bothered about being on the trail alone after a couple of weeks of this. She is still the easiest horse I have to ride away from home that I have.

I have been watching your ground work videos on patreon to try and touch base on those with Tanner again, as well to make it easier on me to work on this. I need to get myself out more often in this heat to work with him! Thanks again for having us and showing me how to work on this with Tanner 😊

You have a fine pair of horses ,,and i really enjoyed your vlog with Ryan , he must have helped so many people enjoy and be safer with their horses ,all over the world .,i really admire his way of working ,, My Mum used to breed and train ,especially other peoples problem horses ,, ive been on them since i was two ..and we never had a made pony in our lives ,every one she did the ground work but we backed and schooled them until they were good childrens ponies ,,everyday a riding/ managment lesson ,, We showjumped and where Very sucessful ,,mum always said every winning round had been achieved by ground work ,,not by the jumping , Ryan is soooo exceptional in that he really shows the ABC of training ,rather than just showing off what his top horses are doing ..he really is showing the way to true horsemanship,,and connection ,,,, People used to ask my Mum " what do you teach your ponies ,,?" Her reply was " to do whatever i ask them to do"😊,,and Ryan will show you how to have a horse like that ,,❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@julzhepburn3688 thank you! I agree. That's what I appreciate about having Ryan around. His videos helped a lot when I first got Diesel. Tanner has such poor ground manners because when I was given him, he already knew how to be ridden, and at that time I didn't know much besides how to ride! That's why him and I are playing catch up now with ground work.

@@Riding_RogueSo are things improving for you with Tanner now? Is he getting better, less anxious, able to be on his own more without fussing & fretting; less bolting/rushing off galloping when you ride him? I admire your persistence in trying to work through this. He certainly is a beautiful horse! Thank you for letting this training be filmed & shown.❤❤ PS. I don’t know when this was filmed before being shown, so you may not have had much time to work with Tanner on this yet. I’m sure glad you have Diesel to rely on for an enjoyable, worry free riding experience. Diesel certainly behaved very well in this video 💓

My horse Jake was like this too. Turns out, he had cataracts. I still worked with him, but after he saw the vet again for continuing to have melt downs, it turns out he is now going blind. His pupils are fixed and dilated, has glaucoma in both eyes.

It is basically a re-hash of weaning a mare and foal. The reaction is pretty much the same with the panic, fussing and calling. One problem is I've found a horse that behaves like this with one horse will just find another buddy if kept with other horses. So it can end up a never-ending problem in a few cases.

Wow, I never had drama weaning. I guess I was lucky with calm kid broke mares. We weaned with an older been there done that mare who refused to let the foal(s) nurse and continued to discipline but give security as well. The momma never fretted.
@dawnaustin4556
@dawnaustin4556 Күн бұрын
@patlindsay538 you did it correctly letting the mare push the foal away slowly. Most people just rip them way. Pretty sure my mare was weaned that way. Ripped away from mother at an early age. I saw a weeks old foal and mother at an auction. The winning bidder separated the baby and sold him off that moment.

That was excellent, nice to see the adjustment of strategy as you evaluated Tanner’s response. At the end he actually dropped his head a ‘little’, brought his head around check you out, then seemed to relax a bit, moved his ears back toward you, indicating to me he was going to pay attention to you more! Shifted his alliance maybe. He is stiff, more suppling would help him physically.

I "think" this (or something like it) is what was done to my one gelding before I owned him but it was done to such an extent that he hates being around other horses. He will do it if you ask him to and won't be a jerk about it but first chance he gets he will go somewhere where he doesn't have to see or be near the other horses. He also won't whinny back if another horse whinnys at him but he will whinny at me when he sees me and he is out in the pasture. It's actually super nice because I mostly ride alone and he really really prefers to ride alone. The only explanation I have for it is that at some point in his life he was taught that being alone is much preferred to being around other horses.

Aaaahhh that's an interesting one ! There is a horse where I ride who is completely panicking when saddled alone so we have a bring a friendo with him. He s fine alone while working, but in the stall it's like we are gonna kill him or abandon him somehow, so he is moving all the fucking timeeeeee, shitting every 30 seconds from stress and calling his friends. Weirdly he is an awesome horse under the saddle or with other horses, and is really well trained, but god, he s a big baby !!!! PS : On the video the horses are really well taken care of, they are beautiful and the 16 years old horse looks younger ! Well done !

I now have a buddy sour horse and am looking forward to trying this out, I've tried making her uncomfortable on the trail but she can get dangerous and start backing up into trees and underbrush. I don't ride with spurs but I may have to try it. So far I'm experienced enough to not get thrown off, no horse is getting rid of me that easy.

If only the breeders who weaned their foals with poor methods (weaning too early, isolating a foal in a stall etc), could understand how badly they screw up the horse's mind, sometimes for the rest of its life. Horses with extreme separation anxiety can cause a lot of damage to themselves, to people, to fences, pastures, stalls, equipment. If you breed horses, please wean at an appropriate age (closer to 8 months, not 4), please give the foal known companions, in fact never keep young horses under 2 years old alone. It is very detrimental to them. They need a herd.

Is it true that senior horses get more herd anxiety due to age (not see as well, not hear as well, less agile/strong, rely on the herd for danger alerts, fear of being left behind in the wild, etc)?

Even when you use fly spray, it's not 100% effective. I'm sure they fly sprayed the horses as a matter of course. You can't expect them to work and learn when they're uncomfortably bothered by flies. Sometimes the flies are just impervious.

Typical sports equestrian…it’s too hard and too much effort to make the horse as rounded as it can possibly be, my ego just needs it to be trained enough to deliver the results I want round the barrels (in her particular case) These types do my nut in because they can’t see that they’ll get even better results by doing the extra work on the ground.
