12:00 ish, horse and rider fell. Note horse making ‘baby mouth’-an equine gesture of submission “ don’t hurt me.” For me, saddest moment in eventing.

By the way, the excellent William Fox-Pitt did not go to Oxford. He went to Goldsmiths. Not that it matters. On on a far more relevant point. It is not worth comparing the BHT of today with this one thirty one years ago. The dressage tests were often very poo then and of course, the speed and endurance of four phases made it far harder, especially on the steeplechase. Also no rider may remount after a fall or an unseated. Health and safety is paramount for both equids and riders.
