THE ICELANDIC HORSE

From the HorseTV Global Archives, we bring you the good-natured and resilient Icelandic horse, which is also an incredibly beautiful breed. Often sporting a gorgeous mane, the Icelandic horse can be found in 40 distinct colors and many more patterns.
The Icelandic horse is capable of all the usual gaits of any other horse - the walk, trot, and canter. However, they possess two unique gaits, the tölt and the skeið, that are thought to have developed in response to a gene mutation.
When Icelandic horses perform the tölt, at least one foot is always in contact with the ground. This fluid movement helps stabilize the ride, removing the usual bounce that a rider experiences and providing a smoother riding experience. Just got home from Iceland. Got to go riding a d lovsd the tolt. It is a wonderful trail riding gait.

Not many horses outside Iceland can do that gait. It does occur though. I had a horse who could. Wonderfully comfortable, and stylish to watch. We called it a triple gait.

My horse was just a good hack, but I think he showed a tendency to 'triple' as it is called in South Africa early on, and my father encouraged him to do it on command. It is a man-trained gait, but some horses find it more easily than others.

I used to own an Icelandic horse that was really strong on the tolt so he would always tolt instead of trot. It made of really comfortable rides.

The tolt looks so comfortable for the rider and horse both. The horses are adorable. I'm used to mini horses (driving) and Thoroughbreds. Amazing gaits. (Jan Griffiths).

Can someone help me understand the differences between the Tølt and the Fino?

They are both 4 beat gaits, but completely different aesthetically

Pasofino is also a race of horses that make very naturally tolt and are trained in the Us and South America to make much smaller steps, but instead Iceland horses are trained to be very fast and powerful.
