I take my hat off to the Veggie Boys and Girls. It's amazing what you're willing to do for customers. My body cannot handle eating this condiment let alone making it. Well done! As far as the name's origin....At one time, the word "horse" was used as an adjective to mean "large, coarse, or strong." Several plants have it in their name. "Radish" comes from the Latin word radix which means "root."

My mom always did the horseradish and beets for Easter. Well, mom actually did the mixing. One of us kids would be tasked with sitting outside and grating it on the old metal grater. Man was that a job. You cried, choked, gasped for fresh air and bled but boy was it good to put on things once made.

The name horseradish is believed to come from a variation of the German name for it, which is “meerrettich” meaning sea radish. The English were said to mispronounce the German word “meer” and began calling it “mareradish.” Eventually it was called horseradish. Also there are face masks that protect you from the 'burn' from the vapors lol

Horseradish reduces inflammation and is very helpful with asthma. It has a lot less side effects than corticosteroids. There used to be a guy who ground horse radish at the farmer's market in Northumberland, I believe. Might have been Sunbury. I was only ever there once, visiting a relative. You could hardly walk past his stand without crying.

In the '40 Dad and Mom made about 6 quarts of horseradish from roots they bought from a friend with an Enterprise hand food grinder. I remember our tears but I still love it, a favorite is a substitute for steak sauce. At our local weekly auction a gardener brings about 100 half pints once a summer, it is good. Never knowing Dad's recipe I asked for his, "Ground horseradish and just adding lightly salted water to almost cover." He stated some cut theirs by adding ground turnips.

I love horseradish, and it grows all over the place where I live, because everyone used to grow it on their allotments, or in gardens, so as it's quite invasive, you can just walk around and collect it. Whilst it's traditional here in Yorkshire to have it with roast beef, and Yorkshire Puddings, my favourite way to have it is in mashed potatoes.
