Losing steam in the end is simply a practice issue. It’s like bodybuilding, every practice you’re tearing down the muscles and then when you rest, they repair and get stronger. Once you’ve practiced enough that your arm is used to a certain amount of time, step up to a longer time to build more muscles for pitching. A normal tournament is usually around 2 1/2 hours and I normally never sit down. I make my way to an open pit and keep throwing. It’s hard at the beginning of a tournament because all pits are generally used but as the tournament goes on a few open up.

How much do you practice at one time. I find that 30 minutes a day should be a minimum and then a few 3 hour practices at least inside of 30 days. I don’t feel like I’m throwing good in the Spring until I get a hood solid 3 hour practice in. Once that happens I’m centered and ready for leagues. Look at it as you would weight lifting. You need to break down the muscles to build them. A good 3 hour practice will make your arm feel a bit rubbery. That first time but once you get to feeling like you can’t control the shoe….. that’s when you hyper focus for another 20-30 minutes and fight through the loose and weak feeling and force those shoes on the peg. That will help with your confidence in long tiring tournaments.

When you practice long hours like 3 or 4 and your arm feels like a wet noodle, it’s time to stop. What I do at that point is throw one 40 shoe game and check my percentage. This is the time where you’ll need to truly focus on every phase of your delivery. I only do 3 hour practices in the spring to shock my muscles into action. After that I feel sore and I try and practice regularly to keep that muscle memory alive.

Amber Mills Bobby C is an excellent bowler and has bowled many perfect games. Bowling at the level gives him the rhythm and muscle memory to help him in horseshoes. So glad your 5th period class enjoys the videos. The green screen videos are also my favorites to look back on and watch. They aren’t easy to make because they are time consuming to put together but the finished product is nice. I’ll get with Bobby C and find out if he can tell your students his top 3 “Dos” and top 3 “Don’ts” of bowling. I’m so glad you love my garbage truck videos. I’m so lucky to be doing the work I do. It’s like playing with huge toys all day. They are very dangerous huge toys but I enjoy what I do and at the end of the day I feel good putting in a hard days work. Hearing from you really made my day. I have a new 360 camera I’m testing out so if any of your students have VR headsets they will really enjoy more garbage trucks in 360°. I’m going to talk to Booby C and try and and make that help video happen ASAP. Have a great day.

Amber Mills yes. I’ve played Bocce Ball but I call it Pétanque. I’ve always had great luck with throwing a bit higher than everyone else so that the heavy ball hits the ground harder and dents the ground. If the ball sinks into the soil a bit, it tends to roll less. I also put a backspin on the ball to further lessen the chance of it rolling past the marker. Do you have quoits scheduled as a sport they will be learning? They say that horseshoes originated from quoits.

When you throw a turn throw. How many turns should there be?
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 4 жыл бұрын
I throw a 1 1/4 turns. Depends on how you hold it to start out. The 1 1/4 is the more preferred since it requires less speed to pitch it which means you can control it easier. It’s preferred slightly more than the 1 3/4 turn.

Im having trouble getting my turn to land flat . Any advice?
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 4 жыл бұрын
Landing a shoe flat is not all in the release itself. Sometimes the problem originates in the grip one is using to start out with. A simple grip check is to look at where your palm is pointing when you hold your shoe when you first “aim” the shoe at the start of your throw. If you’re a flipper and your palm is pointing the the left (right handed pitchers) then most likely when you release in your followthrough, your palm will be pointing left at that time as well. Try to point your palm to the sky or at your face depending on how you start your pitch. This trains your brain to release a flat shoe at the end of your delivery. I use a straight arm with a hyperextended elbow so my shoe lands flat every time. I would get an occasional tire roll out of the pit and it got so frustrating. It’s not a natural position for your arm to be in because when your arm is resting by your side, your palm comfortably faces your leg. Practicing this little trick takes time because your muscles and tendons need to stretch out to allow for this movement to become secondary but once that process is over you will be throwing a flatter shoe more consistently

Are you throwing a back handed multi flip or a standard flip?
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 4 жыл бұрын
If you’re throwing a straight forward standard flip. Try NOT using the thumb caulk. Flip the shoe over so the thumb caulk is facing down. Now try and throw the shoe without and flip at all. Try throwing a knuckler. It’s difficult to help without seeing you throw. You can also try changing your grip. Most of the time you get extra flips because your holding the shoe to deep into your hand and the shoe is released slower causing more flips.

I throw a one flip. I throw about 20/25% ringers. But I get into long stretches that I tend to pull the shoe to the left of the pin. What should I focus on to correct the line.
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 2 жыл бұрын
Straighten your elbow. Lock it up and you’ll pitch straighter to the stake. Your hand rests with your palm pointing inward naturally. To easily throw a flat straight shoe you need to be able to easily stand with your hand stretched out and palm pointing up to the sky. This will also keep your elbow tight to your side more naturally also. Not pitching straight to the stake could also mean a loose elbow that floats away from your side as it passes by your leg in the followthrough.

new at horseshoes and first trying to figure out the best way for me to hold the shoe. If i'm a small, petite person...with small hands....which way would you recommend? It seems like I might have better luck holding in the middle but I'm not sure. Thanks for the video! I'm gonna keep practicing the rhythm. I definitely need help with strength and hoping practice helps. I feel like I want to lean forward just to get the shoe far enough.
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 4 жыл бұрын
Hello. Welcome to the game. Wether you have petite hands or larger hands won’t matter. You want to hold the shoe at the edge of your grip so you can get a smooth release without your fingers snagging on the shoe. I suggest holding it in the middle with your palm facing up to the sky. This will cause you to do some stretching at the elbow because this is not a natural position for your body. Your palm is used to facing your thigh or hip when resting naturally at your side. What you’re asking your palm to do is feel natural resting facing forward towards the other pit. If you try twisting your your hand to do this you will feel resistance. Stretching the tendons and ligaments and muscles to get it to feel natural will take some time. Another thing is that leaning forward is VERY BAD so please don’t do that. Rhythm and timing a long with how fast you take your step is what propels the shoe. Try and take muscle out of your delivery to get a consistent shoe. If you have any questions that you have, I’ll gladly answer them. Have fun pitching.

Good pointers!!! How do you correct multi flips?
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 5 жыл бұрын
Correct it how? Missing left and right? There’s a common problem with the grip of a multiflipper that I see often and that is using their pinky and index finger spread out to steady the shoe. They would benefit from not using those outside fingers since they have a tendency to guide the shoe left or right. The timing for a multiflip is the same as for any other style so no changes needed there. In a game that needs consistency, the multiflip SCREAMS inconsistent. My best advice is to switch to a flip or a turn as quickly as possible. Don’t take my word for it, just look at any video on KZbin or anywhere else. Very hard to find anyone talking about it. I can do a video to help out with cleaning up a multiflip approach if you would like me to.

Set up a six foot ladder in the middle of your pits and pitch over it. Do this for several weeks. It’s all about repetition. Just pitch right over it. Once you have done this for several weeks you can take it down and notice that you can still imagine it’s there in your way and maintain that same height consistently. Pitching around 7-8 feet high should give your shoe a nice angle to be coming down on the stake. Good luck with the turn shoe. It’s a lot of fun to throw compared to a flip shoe.

@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 5 жыл бұрын
One thing that really set my distance and locked me in at 40 feet was locking my elbow. You’d be surprised how doing that eliminates your short and long shoes. It feels odd at first but once you get used to locking out your elbow all you need to worry about is controlling your left and right misses. If you watch my videos you’ll notice I’m 40 feet 98% of the time. As far as the ladder goes......... you don’t actually have to drag out a ladder and set it up in the middle of your pits. You can simply imagine that it’s there and pitch over that height. Some people have a hard time envisioning it there and need the physical ladder for a few days and then can be quickly put away. Another way to get yourself to pitch a little higher is to stack up three 2 x 4s about 18” in front of the stake. This tells your mind that you need to pitch a bit higher to avoid hitting them and also sets your distance at 40 feet. Aim small miss small. Don’t worry about the people giving you grief. You’ll be pitching better than them in no time.

As high as it needs to be. What I mean by that is when you swing down and take a normal stride you can gauge how high your shoe should be by where your shoe lands compared to the stake. If it lands short of the stake raise it up a bit and if you throw over the stake then lower it. You’re creating momentum with simply dropping your arm combined with the weight of the shoe. I don’t take a forceful step so I need to hold it higher.

What is the best way to hold a shoe to get a single flip?
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 2 жыл бұрын
Hold it on the first set of knuckles with palm up to sky. Also hold shoe with thumb caulk down and elbow locked. This will force a slower consistent flip that’s not messed up by a loose elbow are a thumb pressing down on the caulk to hard. Also, with the thumb caulk down, it will act as a brake in the material or even help the shoe to lock into the shoe it lands on.

Oh I'm holding the shoe exactly like you ,one flip,your slow motion videos are great but I can't see one where you release
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 3 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry. This comment slipped through without me seeing it a while ago. My release is simply letting my grip go and the shoe slides off my fingertips. I don’t snap my thumb down or grasp the shoe tighter at any specific moment. The flip cones from the upward motion of my followthrough. If you put pressure on the shoe with your thumb while flipping you can create a callus and that also leads to fatigue over time. My method requires no gripping strength or pressure on the shoe so my delivery is consistent from the first shoe of a tournament all the way to the last shoe of a tournament. I can usually pitch 6 to 7 hours with no fatigue or callus issues.

@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 4 жыл бұрын
Edward Deitz you can do either or. The main thing is to plant your foot where you can maintain your best balance. I suggest a small stride rather than a large stride. A large stride will make your body dip to far down. You don’t want to try and throw a shoe while dipping and then coming up. You want your chest to go forward not down and then up.

What do you think about, if anything, to release the shoe consistently at the right height?
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 3 жыл бұрын
That’s the biggest thing to keep consistent because that controls a few other things like distance and time to get proper rotation with a turn shoe and with a flip shoe, it allows the shoe time to open up onto the stake. Rhythm and timing are needed to set your height of your shoe because if your timing is off you will lean and then release late which could make you throw low. Start with a static position with the shoe around the height you wish to release it at. That’s your first reminder to your release point. You can pick a target behind the pit and throw at that target in the air if you’re having issues being consistent with height. Lots of practice usually can help set height. The best shoe is the shoe you released without going through anything in your mind before starting your delivery. It should be so instilled in your mind that you barely think 💭about what you need to do, you just do it. Have you ever done a job 10 hours a day 5 days a week and you do it effortlessly and very quickly with few mistakes and in your mind it’s monotonous? When you train a new guy he just watches you and thinks you’re amazing because you do it so fast and effortlessly. Horseshoes is like that. Put the time in with practice DAILY and it will get to the point that it feels effortless.

@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 3 жыл бұрын
It helps with a steady, muscle free momentum. I’ve been doing it for years now. The locked elbow keeps the shoe steady and allows better consistency. If you were going to make a horseshoe pitching robot, would you make it with a straight arm or an arm with an elbow in it? Taking out the bent elbow increases your consistency by leaps and bounds over using it in your delivery.

Qukslvr idk boss, I just think its too high, But thats your way playing i do respect that,
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 3 жыл бұрын
The lower you hold it the more you need to “muscle” it. Using muscles in your throw is inconsistent. The weight of the shoe and your arm are consistent meaning.... the drop speed of your arm will remain consistent. You can never know if your using the same amount of muscle each pitch.
@Qukslvr
@Qukslvr 3 жыл бұрын
At some point and time you need to lock out your elbow. If you do it while your arm is swinging it can lead to bouncing or jerking of the shoe. If you lick out your elbow right away you smooth out your delivery and it keeps the shoe steady which is invaluable to delivering the shoe accurately

You got that right. Do the opposite. Ha ha. There’s a bunch of guys in our league that throw a backhanded multi flip shoe. The best one I’ve seen is maybe a 30% ringer average. They tend to get more coming in backwards than on the stake. I actually thought that would be the best way to get ringers when I first started because my thought was the shoe comes in open about 90% of the time. Boy of boy was I dead wrong. The bad thing about that shoe is that it comes in hot 🔥 and has a tendency to bounce out or off. We just played a team called Boomers and they have a few players that pitch like that. There’s also one guy on the Ringers team named Bill that pitches the multi flip. You can check them out on my second channel called “HORSESHOE PITCHING”. Or not! Ha ha. It’s a fun shoe to watch flipping in the air if executed correctly. Maybe I can do a slow motion of this pitch the next time I’m playing against a person that pitches this way.

@@Qukslvr Like you say..the shoe comes in hot when you do the multi-flip and my friend hit's the peg then bounces off. I bought made in China shoe's then made in USA shoes which were softer metal and cut my thumb because the notch was chewed up. The Chi-com metal is harder so I'm back to using them. Thanks for the video's.
