Horse anatomy 101: The outside of the hoof is hard with little feeling, like a fingernail. But the area inside is soft and tender, especially the V shaped region known as the frog that is effectively her heel. When hot fitting a shoe any high spots will be burned off to get good contact between shoe and hoof, but care must be taken not to let this touch the frog. Also when driving the nails, they are driven at an angle towards the outside, the tips breaking through to be curled over and clenched so the shoe doesn't work loose. I'm a blacksmith in real life, and have helped ferriers shoe the horses before since ferriers are a specialized profession now instead of being the responsibility of the general smithy.

The lead up to this scene was also pretty great. She kept coming up with excuses and tried acting tough/confident. The moment her friends clarified that they paid for this treatment, and there was no clear escape from it, she winnied at the beginning.

In all fairness, there are snake breeds out there like Anacondas that can actually legit constrict mammals the size of full grown horses. So if a Lamia like her is a snake the size of a human, it’s only natural she’d be able to constrict a Centaur so easily.

As a professional farrier, the process of shoeing a horse shown here is very accurate. 1. clean out/knife the sole, ridding any exfoliation 2. nip and rasp down the hoof wall, bringing it back to its proper and original length and level. 3. shape the shoe to fit the foot before burning it onto the foot (farriers either hotshoe or coldshoe. hotshoeing gives a better fit when burned onto the foot when properly leveled. 4. Once fitted, knife out any flat sole to avoid sole pressure when the foot is nailed. 5. drive the nails through the white line that separates the hoof wall from the sensitive sole. 6. When the ends of the nails are stuck out, nip the ends, then clench and finish. And voila, a shod foot.

@renegadeoflife874 жыл бұрын
The basics of it aren't too far off, but they did miss a few details. The nails are driven angled towards the outside, the tips emerging the side and being clinched over. If you drive them straight you risk injuring the horse. These days hot fitting shoes is rare, most are fitted cold. It is interesting that her friends have toe clips on their shoes, while she does not.
@henderstech4 жыл бұрын
@@renegadeoflife87 True that they missed some details. And you are right, My father is a farrier and probably has like one or two customers who request it. My father has to make a few toe clips for certain scenarios, very interesting the friend having toe clips and she did not. Makes sense kinda if another farrier shoed her friend maybe.

If the hooves on the rear are too long you trim them, not put horseshoes on. Depends on environmental conditions but what it actually sounds like is that the front hooves are too short due to overuse. In which case you would put some protective cover on them, which might be horseshoes, but there are other types of covers as well including things that cover the entire hoof. If it is worn down enough the nails could reach the soft tissue which would be painful for the horse. Horseshoes are primarily used to help keep hooves together in wetter climates that degrade hoof structure. They often get overused by people who don't quite know what they are doing. They became the default historically because people from England would always need to shoe their horses because, as stated, that is a VERY wet climate. Just a friendly FYI from a rancher.

For those saying she shouldn't be freaking out because it doesn't hurt and that she's a gladiator: this is an irrational fear. She's never in any actual pain, she's just afraid if this specific type of pain. Kinda like a soldier who has a phobia of the dentist or getting a hair cut. Hair cuts don't hurt, but some people don't like the idea of a part of them being trimmed off with some scissors or razors. Most routine dentist visits aren't painful.

Going to sound odd, but I've actually wondered how this sort of stuff gets done in a fantasy setting... For example, using Breath of the Wild as a example, who is putting the leg armor on the lyonels running around, as theres no possible way they can be doing it themselves, and they don't play nice with other monsters?
