Hi Everyone: I now have a Patreon: www.patreon.com/HorsesPT Get more material and help keep these videos sponsor-free by supporting me over there. On the Patreon, I will be doing a whole bunch of fun, creative stuff that will never be on the KZbin channel, including: -Exclusive Giveaways -Audiobook recordings -Exclusive video essays -Process/BTS videos -Q+A’s -Sneak peeks -and more! Some eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed that none of my videos have sponsors or product promotions. By refusing these “opportunities,” I am able to prioritize the creative process over the whims of advertisers. Supporting me on Patreon is a great way to help all of this happen. Plus, you’ll get all kinds of extra stuff. Thank you for everything!

If you're careful about sponsors, and give them their own very discrete blocks in the video, I don't think it necessarily affects the creative process. Especially if it helps you keep food on the table. Nice videos!

Something about Catholicism just produces some of the best horror writers. I think it's the tradition. Catholics grow up knowing the value of traditions and the mystical. The fact that when you go to a Catholic mass today it's basically the exact same thing as was done a 1000 years ago. The only difference is the language and which way the priest is facing. No one does horror or tradition like the Catholics do. They just have this innate sense of the mystical that i envy.

Well said. I was raised vaguely in the Catholic faith and it always felt quite ominous going into the church. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing, but it's definitely a "thing". Anyways, thanks for watching! -Michael

as a fellow catholic i can say this topic is very interesting mysticism in catholicism is deeply rooted in tradition because it is an integral part of our faith Yet most catholics do not know this, mysticism was one of the founding base of the church, notably introduced by the fathers of the church we notably take part in this mysticism and tradition when going to the mass on sundays

I was raised catholic and participated in the traditions, but my family never forced me to go or forced any beliefs on me. My father was Muslim, i participated and learned but was never forced. I do remember being sometimes scared during mass. I think because of all the paintings and talk of jesus dying and coming back. So when I was old enough to be aware, i loved horror movies. Begged my mom to rent from blockbuster, The Exorcist. She warned me how scared i was gonna be. How badly it scared her when she watched it. I slept with the hallway and bathroom light on for 2 weeks. I also was scared of being possessed after. All that time going to church, taking communion, doing classes to take communion. I never knew you could be possessed. Wasnt until that movie a new fear was unlocked. I feared if i was bad, id be possessed. Something about losing control of your body and mind and being cognizant of that truly terrified me.

One of the things growing up Catholic was that there wasn't a distinction between mystical beliefs and the teachings of Christ applied to daily life. It was assumed that we just knew the mystical aspects as truth. Even calling it "mysticism" was never done; anything that implied that mystical beliefs was anything beyond normal was not included in our education.

Since we are talking about mysticism, I wish to add that eastern christian theology (Orthodox theology especially) has the idea of theosis, Or deification in english. Which to put in simple words is a belief that one's spiritual aim should be total unity with God on a literal level and as the bible describes it as "participate in the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:4) This very mystic belief is not limited to Eastern mystics, it was actively discussed by much of eastern theologians like Athanasius of Alexandria and the alexandrian/coptic fathers, John Chrysostom and The cappadocian fathers and so many more and is considered a core part of Orthodox theology and spirituality. Athanasius of Alexandria even said "God became man so men may become gods" And theosis is seen as Salvation. it is what christ came to achieve and what he gave us, especially since eastern christians reject the western understanding of original sin. Theosis to eastern christendom is sanctification of the soul by the holy spirit, acceptance of christ and unity with the father, to ultimately partake in the divine nature literally.

Very well done Michael. I am a Catholic seminarian, and I'm always a little wary with people speaking online about Christian topics without being well informed. This is not the case here, you've done your research and it is a well-written and presented essay. There's so much detail I'd like to go in on, as the mystical and spiritual traditions of east and west are very interesting to me; at least the more normative elements - I'll leave the more fantastical elements to those much holier than I. The prayer tradition of monks of east and west is fascinating, the sayings of the desert fathers, and writers like Saint John Cassian, and Saint John Climacus are brilliant; one tradition that begins there in the deserts of Egypt and is later written about in the Russian Orthodox Classic "the way of a pilgrim" is the "Jesus prayer" - a repetitive prayer using the Holy Name of Jesus, seeking to pray constantly, and take every thought captive. Through translation, this has now become very popular in the west, and is one of my preferred ways of praying. From the western monastic tradition, the practice of Lectio Divina, or Sacred Reading, has also exploded in popularity; contemplative reading of Scripture, the Gospels in particular, which seeks to renew one's Mind by directing one's thoughts and actions towards the Word, who is Jesus Christ. It is, as St. Jerome says: "ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Christ." Regarding those parts of spirituality that go beyond the natural, general accepted wisdom is that being too desirous of mystical visions is a good way to become over-credulous and be deceived by the devil, it is why the Church is generally cautious with each case, even cases the Church accepts as genuine, such as Saint Padre Pio, who, though later declared a saint and his stigmata seen to be genuine, was silenced for a long time because of superiors being cautious of deceit.

I used to know a priest who had performed an exorcism. He would get visibly distraught and upset when anyone would ask about it. It wasn’t a joke or a lite matter to discuss. He never told a single other soul about it. He was a happy guy who knew how to speak to the youth. He would call me heretic as a joke since I would tell him I didn’t have too much faith in me. Wish I could talk to him today. Rest in Peace Father Frank.

I've found "get out of house and don't ever come back" to be pretty effective and to the point. I was raised a catholic, knew some priests who performed exorcisms and were willing to talk about it. The general consensus is that formal ritual isn't as important as faith and conviction and courage.

IMO: Do not obsess over something you desire; do not fall into despair or melancholic despondency; do not let your estimation of your faculties convince you that you have ultimate knowledge of reality; do not allow anger or indignation to lead you into harming or condemning others or yourself; do not become consumed by the sense or conviction that you deserve what others have; do not numb your heart through bodily pleasures or the acquisition of possessions; and do not keep from others what would benefit them that you have and do not need. Call it demonic obsession, possession or just plain neurosis (to differentiate between psychosis, which is not anyone’s fault), avoiding these mistakes and admitting them and forgiving yourself when you fail is how to almost certainly avoid it.

Malachi Martin says in his book "Hostage to the Devil" that a possessing demon can "perfectly possess" someone if he gives his will entirely over to the demon. That person loses his force of volition, his will...perfectly.

I love to see how you take an interesting concept te enter into another and develop them both in fantastica ways. This video essays are damn well done. It´s awesome how you can take one´s attention in such a charming way, that it´s difficult to distract and not learn the knowledge that you spread arounde the whole video.

Horses I respect your honesty with your final conclusion holding truth in it, and giving the viewers something to reflect upon. Very good video format, and very informat video on the subject. Good audio. Good editing. Clear voice. Kept me as a viewer very interested in wanting you to say more about the subject. And you kept to keeping a respective tone & choice in words to educate individuals about said subject rather than bashing or being preachy about it. I say this as a Christian who loves seeing an informative format to the faith/other subjects to cultures/beliefs etc etc. Allowing people to see/understand the other side without the influence of complete one sided prespective influencing the viewer. May you have a good day & keep up the good content & remember doing something out compassion can be just as good with motivation.

Thank you, though I am not a Christian, I have studied that and other faiths with some interest in the parts that are borrowed, or shared, and those that are unique to the faith. Your essay was informative, thought provoking, and happily unbiased. Your choices in visual material fitted well with the topic. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this presentation.🖤🇨🇦

I am not catholic, but i am ex-christian and a diagnosed schizophrenic. I want to say i think there are many ways to categorize a person like me, based on the culture i might happen to live in. Lots of us in many many cultures are misunderstood and mistreated. Even now in the world of the dsm, things are not perfect. Where I'm personally able to have livable level of wellbeing,, others without healthcare or diagnosis face some of the roughest times in America. schizophrenia exists in 1% in total human pop maybe 20% in homeless americans. We still are not regularly trusted for our needs and opinions, and almost no one here is given any "spiritual" framework to heal and understand the patterns we face from the inside out, only to medicate and make it go away so we can go on laboring. Survival is dictated on ability to hold work, not to have low suffering.

There’s a lot missing from this video though. Exorcism isn’t just Christian. It’s way older than Christianity. There is also extreme abuse done in the form of exorcism at times. Taking this seriously and being respectful of people doesn’t just look like discussing one religious paradigm and refusing to examine it skeptically/critically for fear of offending.

@@dersitzpinkler2027don't waste your breath, drones will be drones, with a little bit of thought even in this bad video one can see the madness of religion, drones are just bored and want their daily dopamine, it's really pathetic tho, how they cannot see the sadistic tyrant their "god" is, and how much ridden with "sin" paranoia, mass hysteria, and utter madness their religion is, but that's what you get whereas one lacks autonomous critical thought, let them live like sheep, their god was a shepherd at a time after all...

@@nuzzi6620your just mad because he’s telling facts that you don’t like. You mention the opinion that church is bad mocking his points in the form of calling them rubbish however you give no substance to back up your comment. The reply clearly states factual things about churches committing acts of evil although the ones he mentions are nowhere near the worst i mean we had/have the crusades and the rampant pedophilia that has almost become tradition in the catholic church. Your clear jump to insult the replier shows you are weak in faith and easily wounded by fact. Sounds to me like your religion isn’t really the place of stability that people claim it to be. Or are you just an insecure teenager? Who knows.

I've always been fascinated and deeply enjoy stories, horror, and similar that are based in Christian Mysticism, but I never understood that it was called that. My brain could only interpret it as "Christian Lore" or "Christianity as a mythology", both which aren't very respectful to the actual faith, but I do think are kinda funny. Love the vid, thanks for making it!
