Hey Tina, I thought you & Banksy did really well lunging. Taking into account that he was fresh & that you don't lunge often - I was expecting fireworks. Banksy was so good. Well done🎉. I hope your gynae issues resolve. It sounds like they are really looking after you. As a former nurse, I admire you greatly for sharing this journey. This is so important and could save lives (especially with regard to having regular smear tests done). Best wishes, sweetheart🤗. I can't believe how you teased us at the end of your vlog😫 I look forward to seeing your new arrival🐴???. Congratulations on your 10yr anniversary. Much love to you & Rob (& Suze) & Banksy❤.

Great to see him feeling much better! What helps me in lunging and being clear in communication to my horse is relaxing the front hand down a bit and staying behind his girth line when he has to keep going forward and then dropping the whip hand and stepping a bit in front of the girth line to slow down. I saw it mentioned in other comments as well, but I also prefer to hold the lunge as a rein and keep the other (big) loops in my whip hand. I will say, the way you follow and step your feet along while lunging is very good naturally!

Nice job lunging today! I find that if I focus on an object outside the circle, I don’t get as dizzy. 😊 Looking at the horse go round or his feet makes it worse. Keep at it. Especially when you have a big space to work in so that you can move with him instead of having to stay on a small circle. Easier on the hocks that way.

Just do the same thing on both sides, Tina. That's all you have to remember to do. What you do with Banksey going to the right must be done the same amount of times going to the left. To stop getting dizzy. Walk!! Make the circles bigger. With you walking around, you won't get dizzy by staying in one place. Just a suggestion for you. When I lunge any horse, I'm always walking around with them. It also puts less stress on their joints when you do this. Once a week to start is a great idea, but after talking to the Vet, you might need to increase it to twice a week. But follow the advice of your Vet. Happy anniversary to you and Rob! Glad your procedure went well, I had a huge polyp removed "down there" at the end of May last year and was quite relieved that all was clear when it was sent away. Well done with the lungeing I think you did a great job for not doing it that often. If you find him falling in on the circle, a tip I had been told was to point the end of the lunge whip more toward his shoulder to encourage the shoulder to keep out and once the horse had moved out to return to the triangle shape of having the whip pointing towards his bum again. x

Long lining is absolutely fabulous for building up stifles and topline. When you long line you can ask for haunches in which is an excellent strengthening exercise for stifles (in addition to the other exercises you are doing). Also if you keep the outside line around the body you can help them balance in the canter I’m also a fan of equi band and polo wrapped around the hind end for proprioception

Helps a lot to hold the end of the lunge rein and any spare loops ( big ones, not wrapped around your hand obviously) in the hand with the schooling stick and then run the line with through your other hand like a ridden rein. This helps you keep a more consistent feel on this bridle or caverson and also make it easier to adjust the line if he cuts and you need to shorten it. You did very nicely today and he was a very good boy. Have a lovely anniversary weekend 🙂

Practice makes perfect. You are both doing very well with the lunging. Personally, I would try for twice a week. Banksy is very fit already, so he can take the extra workout. Thank you for being straight about your procedure. You are absolutely right......us females must always look after our bodies, and not be at all embarrassed or worried about talking about it. Best wishes on that front. Lastly, you were being totally realistic about the future, Banksy and having Julie by your side in the darkest hours. She is a real treasure as a vet and as a friend. ❤

Practice practice practice Tina! You’ll get better each time. I wouldn’t hold onto the end of the lunge line personally in case he does spook as you’ve got nothing to let him move and might get dragged. Banks should be more than capable of doing bigger and smaller circles on the lunge in walk, trot and canter. Transitions (and even direct ones like walk to canter) are great to practice on a lunge. I will always try to do the same on each rein and make it as equal as possible. Changing circle size, in a big space like this arena I would be walking the circle up and down not only to avoid leaving a track in the surface but makes for more interesting work! Groundwork is very rewarding and so worth it

Hey T, so glad to hear your procedure went well. Lunging looked fantastic especially considering how little you've done it. One thing I would recommend is if he breaks rhythm and goes into counter canter, bring him back to trot but then make him canter again straight away, that way you're teaching him what he's supposed to do rather than letting him learn that going into cc = oh I can stop cantering and go into trot. Think of it the same as if you do a rubbish downward transition you want to go straight back up into trot and do a better one rather than just moving on.

Hi Tina. For safety reasons you should never loop the rope around your hand. You should pass it back and forward across your palm. This helps prevent your hand getting caught in the rope if the horse should happen to take off. Otherwise good job. Practice makes perfect and don’t let him get away with anything. Be firm on making him do what you want. 😊

Was going to comment this safety tip too! I watched someone lose half a thumb when her horse spooked and bolted on the lunge, the loops tightened fast, and off it went! I will forever go back and forth, even with a lead rope, because of that.

Hi Tina and Bansky! Okay I do a ton of lunging and the key for me anyways is to stay at a 90 degree to the hind hip and keep slight pressure from the hind with the whip. When you have him going in a rhythm relieve the whip pressure. Do your best to not step to his shoulder, stay connected to the hind hip. they seem to always want to turn in and stop. Hope this is helpful. When I pick the whip vertical in the middle, I request both eyes and a nice relaxing exhale from you and the horse. It’s weird when you are in sync you do it together. Kinda a nice bonding thing. Just love you T!

Lunging is REALLY hard to learn! We've only done it ourselves a couple of times and it's a lot. It sounds like you've gotten some really helpful advice in the comments. The one thing we noticed is just how big and irregular your own circles got, which seems like it kept Banksy from staying on a track. If that was not intentional, along with a longer lunge line you might fight it helpful to draw your own circle in the sand with a foot, or give yourself a cone to work around so you can keep your movement smaller. That's the thing we struggle most with and our instructor gives us a guide for how small of space we should be in. It's a lot smaller and less movement than you think for yourself! She always tells us to move your shoulder, not your entire body!

Hi Tina Your lunging is really coming on, keep it up. I do it once a week with my girl and she loves it, no whip needed just voice commands she’s a legend. We all love your vet Lucy she is amazing such a lovely lady who I think has a soft spot for banksy. I hope you enjoyed your time at talland, I entered this year but sadly didn’t get through, fingers crossed for next year. I was offered a ablation but because I’ve got a c section scar from having my children they couldn’t do it, so I went on the cerazette mini pill and have been on that for 20 years, never looked back. The hysterectomy is a day procedure now they do it keyhole and your out the same day if no complications, so it’s worth thinking about and you will never have to worry about periods again, you get your life back. You little tease Tina, you can’t sit on a new pony and not show us , that’s not fair, hahaha looking forward to seeing your new baby soon, xx happy anniversary to you both. Hi susie, hope your well.x

To refine your technique & get Banksy using his hind end better, you might find it helpful to draw a circle in/on the ground (or use another lunge line to make a circle) & then as you lunge him make sure you don't move out of said circle. While you are both getting the hang of lunging, the circle can be a little on the larger side, eventually you want to be able to lunge well enough that you don't move out of a 1m diameter circle max. Exercises: Lots & lots of transitions. If you long rein him, doing square turns is really good for getting them to engage the hind legs better as well. Of course nothing beats the tried & true shoulder in IMO 😉 Pleased to hear your procedure went well. Exciting times ahead for you by the sounds. I look forward to watching the journey. Side note- Susie is awesome, what a good bunch of horsey friends you have 🙂

Hello! Very good lungeing! Banksy really listened to you :) I think lungeing is very beneficial to include for any horse. It allows them to use their body weight without a rider messing with things and you can work them longer and build fitness. As long as you keep the circle as big as you can. My horse loves it and it sets his mind right especially when he has a lot of energy. I like your lungeing setup. I don’t like when people only use halter and chain and their horse doesn’t listen and and just flails everywhere.

Great first go!! I would get a longer lunge line, so you can have reserve line in your hand to send him out more or make the circle smaller, avoid holding onto the loop, as he could drag you along. Also I would rather see him with a roller on, an outside side rein, and put the lunge rein through his bit and run it to the roller, so it’s like a running rein. Then you have more control of his straightness and bend etc. lots more transitions, walk/trot..trot/walk, trot/canter and vice Versa. So good to see you looking well, and Banksy as well 🎉❤🦄

I am also an expert at all, but it normally helps me to put the end of the lunge line in the hand where I have the whip. This way I can quickly shorten the line if needed, because I already have it in both hands.

What I do when lunging is use my guiding hand in different heights. For walking my guiding hand is low , trot a bit higher and canter higher than the trot hand position so the horse learns what to do just by the hand height. Also I point with my finger in the direction the horse needs to go. Also smaller body language means slower gait and bigger body language is a bigger gate. Love you and Banksy 🤗🌷

Hi Tina I had a similar problem with my pony with those muscles. I had to lunge twice a day 3 times a week. 20 minutes a time. Also alternate with cavaletti 3x 2 meters apart. Once a week is not enough. Also I put on the bridle but put a headcollar on over it. Lunging from the headcollar is more horse friendly and you don't jerk in the mouth giving mixed signals. Also u can lunge in your field. I do. Although now I have a round pen with some sand in it. That works great in the winter. My boys always have access to the sand pit. So the exercise themselves in the winter. As the sand is salty itdoesnt freeze. It also gives a more solid bottom less muddy. Just a few tips. For the muscles and helping him use his core to propel those back legs. You could also teach him passage. Do it from the ground will also help him

Nice job facing your fears in the arena with some traumatic memories--that is such a big step! When lunging I was taught to match my shoulders to the horse's shoulders--so facing my shoulders in the direction of travel on the circle and not facing the horse's side. That helps the horse understnad where you want them to go as facing your shoulders to their side will naturally encourage them to turn in. The other big thing is to never take backwards steps while lunging as that draws the horse to you (encourages them to turn in or come on a smaller circle). Instead, if the line goes slack and the horse has lost the forward on the lunge circle and is spiraling in, gather the rope a bit, continue walking your small circle with forward steps, shoulders facing forward and at the level of the horse's shoulder (e.g. not standing in line with their head or hip), and send them forward with the lunge whip. Keep up the awesome work with Banksy! I can't wait to meet your new pony!! 🐴

For lunging and dissyness i found it massively helpful to walk round in a little bit of a bigger circle, changing the rein more often also helps with that. and then as when riding try and do the upwards and downwards transitions at random places so he listens more to you rather than learning the pattern. You did great T and im proud of you for getting out of your comfort zone.❤

I was taught to use a lungeing cavesson as you have more control and it doesn't slip around. And to pivot on your heel on the spot, not walk around, so they are working in a proper circle, not a wobbly egg or square shape. But the more you do, the better you'll both get at it. Then do the other side and walk for as long as it takes to cool down. So the total trot and canter is 5mins. So good to see someone who's on social media showing the real reality of horse ownership. Great to also see you getting in the homework. Practice makes perfect. I find when a horse falls in on the circle. Step forward into their space in order to send them out again on the circle. A touch with the whip may be needed just so they are clear. I move the horse about in the school. Just to add variety. Finally yes long Reining!!! 🙌 the best thing in the world. Well thats my thought any way 😂 you could also turn this into lunging with two lines at times. Try the rabbit ear way of handling your lunge line. I find it gets less tangled Enjoy, it will get easier I promise. My horse was three when I got him and couldn't even walk a circle without wobbling into the middle of the circle 😂 we've come a long way since.

You did so well in my opinion! For me the biggest thing with lunging and long lining is different goals each time. It feels really boring to go in a circle twice a week. So I try to set a goal for bending (lots of bigger and smaller circles) and the next time I work on lifting legs (poles) or streching (long lining and using the complete arena and work on extention and collection on a strait line too). Just like you do with ridden work... Greetings from Germany😊

That lunge session was soooo much better Tina, honestly the best advise i have is practice makes perfect. Nobody finds it easy straight away like anything in life, don’t be so hard on yourself and ignore the negative nellys (if there have been any). I’m sure if those of use that are used to lunging watched a video of our first time, we would all cringe at ourselves lol so you’re doing great. Managing the lunge line is tricky but you’ll get the hang of it, practice when he’s going nicely just holding the lunge whip and re organising the line with both hands at the same time. Hard to explain in a message but you’ll get there! I love lunging, the satisfaction of them listening to voice aids makes me so happy. They’re so clever. Banksy is so good at coming back down the transitions which most find more difficult! Well done and keep going xx

So much better. 🤩 Long-lining will be brilliant and you can do that on a circle so it becomes lunging on 2 reins. I find using my voice clearly in 2 syllables for all transitions makes it easier, going upwards in pitch on the second syllable for upwards transitions and downwards on the second syllable for the downwards transitions. Eg- terrr-rottt and can-terrrr. I do also use walk-ingggg for downwards and walk-on for upwards. I also use ste-dddyyy for slowing down and when I want them to stop, and-stand. I have no idea if that’s the correct way to do it, but it works for me. 😂 I’m glad you are getting your health sorted and I have everything crossed for good test results. It’s not much fun being a woman at times. 🙃 I’m menopausal and that’s a barrel of laughs. 🤦🏼‍♀️😆 I do love listening to you thinking out loud… being inside my head is the same as yours I think btw. 🥴🤣 I can’t wait to see your new ponio- soooo exciting!! Well done with the lunging. I always hold the end of the line in my whip hand, just like the end of a lead line. I always felt I had greater control. I also noticed you would raise your lead hand when he would drift in which can be a cue to slow or stop. Instead I would bring the tip of my whip more toward his center to add pressure, and when he moved away, I would then shift the end of the whip back to behind the flank. Also, on a personal level, I had a large calcified fybroid, about 20cm or so in diameter. I chose not to get a hysterectomy, and I did have second thoughts. In hindsight, aged 45 and not going to have kids, I should have gotten the hysterectomy. Happy to hear your procedure went well!

I think you’re doing really well and practise makes perfect. I have a young mare so I like lunging her for various reasons, I will add make sure your voice aids are consistent. I use the walk, trot canter to change, and I use and to prepare her for the change and I use the woah for change of pace and steady if she throws a few shapes.. use what you want but make sure you always use the same words etc. well done, he’s great and you’ll be an expert soon.

Lots of upwards and downwards transitions close together and if you can lunge on a hill in a field is really good. Such a improvement already xxx

Just for some information. I had a full hysterectomy when I was 36 and it was the best decision I ever made. I had major problems not only from cysts but from the scar tissue they left behind. I was back on my feet in 3 days and feeling great (plus, since they took everything, no more paps)

If you have hills, walking uphill really does help build the booty. It doesn't have to be steep, just the upward slant. Hat and gloves yes! I was trying to teach my first horse to ground drive, and one of my "reins" was plaited out of old-fashioned bale strings, kind of scratchy. He was walking along nicely so I decided to try a jog-trot. He bolted, and before I could let go completely, I had a lovely friction burn on my left hand. Luckily someone else in the yard had an ice chest along, and the ice staved me from most of the damage. Never-never longe without gloves. A quiet horse on a hot day can always get stung by a wasp or something, and a horse with some fire in the bloodline.....well.

T, if it makes you feel less silly about “planning ahead” - I’ve been worrying myself and thinking about ✨that day✨ ever since my girly turned 13. She’s 27 now and thiriving! (I do get what you mean though, about wanting to have a familiar face there when you make that call. I feel like it would make you a little bit more at ease if the person doing it is someone who you know and trust - as a person - not just as a professional). Sending you big hugs, and I hope that day isn’t for a very long time - for either of us.

Lunging definitely gets easier with practice! I always found it really useful to watch someone more experienced lunge also. Very exciting news about the new horse, looking forward to the videos! Also just an fyi the GU desserts are not vegetarian.. we got them and had to give them away as unfortunately they have beef gelatine in them 😒

I like to lunge as I had a tb of the track and it was great prep to getting on. My tip is to treat the lunge rein like a normal rein so that you keep a consistent contact when you watch this back you will see you are holding the lunge line by your leg. Also I always used to lunge with rubber rings on the bit to protect his mouth for those excited moments and the pull away from you. As you are on the ground and not on their back when they pull away the action on their mouth can be quite bad and it prevents the bit moving drastically in those silly moments.

I think you did a great job. Transitions are great on the lunge. Just like riding a circle and doing transitions. You may want to try a lunging cavesson. I know I never like any training aids (like side reins) tight at all but there were a few times in the trot that it looked like Banks could have actually gotten caught up in your ropes (I forgot what you called it and that irritates me to no end) but in my defense I've never used that before. With a lunging cavesson, you can even use bailing twine if you need to. Or you can use the bailing twine just like the equipment you have except if he gets caught it will break. It is a great way to keep him on the circle and keep him long and low. I think Holly Lenehan called them "strings" and she uses it with her young horses. The whip is essential. It is your legs/driving aid so no whip and your horse will be all over the place. Doesn't matter you did great as did Banksy. The only thing I was a little concerned about was the rope tangling in his legs.

Hi Tina Maybe try trying a tail bandage around the bum to keep his hindquarters engaged and hind legs moving under them. Google it for specific instructions. Maybe just walk him around with it on first before you lunge to make sure he gets the feel of it - and use quick release knots
