My Mini Australian Shepherd has a problem and today we are going to try and fix it. Frankie needs to get more exercise and the best way to do that is to run him. He absolutely loves his frisbee but I find he is a little too hyper focused when it comes to playing with it. And my hands get full of slobber
So let's fix my dog's biggest problem ..

The issue with running is that it just builds up their stamina, so they can keep going even longer, haha! You could try giving him a backpack to carry so it’ll give him more of a "job" to do. Also, when playing fetch, try making him wait before releasing him to chase the ball. That adds a bit of mental work to the game too! That has to be done in a fun way to not lead to frustration. Anyway, welcome back! Love the vlogs. 😊

Some dogs need to be taught how to switch off and I think frankie is one of them. Practice settle training and calm, make home a place to relax. He doesn't need more excersise he needs to have an off switch trained into him 🫂 also mental stimulation would be better than extra excersise. After the long hike if he's still raring to go, give him Puzzles, lick mats, kongs etc. Anything that gets him thinking and above all licking. Licking is calming for dogs and sniffing is also calming too, you could try find it games eg: scatter treats in a room and let him sniff to find them. I would suggest doing both settle training and mental enrichment as they could both really help to calm him down after a really stimulating walk or fizzbo session. I hope this helps even a little 💕

The chuck It (I found a folding one on Amazon) is a very good idea. Went to play Frisbee yesterday with my 7 months old mini Aussie and the frisbee was disgusting... my hands were full of mud. I carry my stuff in a pack sack so she doesn't jump at it while I am walking. Romy (my dog) understands the command "C'est assez" which means it's enough. She immediately switches off. I think you should teach Frankie that the frisbee can be beside him and you don't play. My opinion is that hiding it makes it worst.... and you get nervous that he sees it (so you have a problem!). Love your videos.

One of the main ways I exercise my Border Collie is with the chuck-it because, as you mentioned, you can avoid touching the ball. Now, dogs get easily addicted to the chuck-it and become demanding. With my Collie, I incorporate training with fetch. So it tires him both mentally and physically, which is what they crave. It also breaks up the game, not just mindlessly fetching the ball. I know it can seem really intense how much he's glued to you for that toy, but I'd use that to your advantage- you can get him to be very obedient and do a lot of tricks with that amount of focus and drive!

I need some of those whistling balls! My dogs (I have one aussie but we often play with two other aussies as well) enjoy both frisbee and the chuckit stick. Look for the longer chuckit stick. MUCH better range than that short one. I shoulder it when we are done like a soldier might shoulder a rifle and they know ball time is over. Great in big fields or when the weather is nice, and the tide is low, we go on maybe a 5k beach walk. Well, I walk 5k and they run probably at least 20! I drive a truck for a living (road construction) and my aussie goes to work with me every day. I keep a chuckit stick and ball in my jeep and another in our work truck. I try to get to work early enough to chuck the ball for her for at least a good 15 or 20 minutes and then we play for half an hour to an hour after work with maybe a few short breaks during the day as well. I try to run her/them especially hard on the weekends, and training as well. A friend of mine, who also has an aussie and a border collie, laughed at me when I told her how much I run my dogs. She said "Why?!? All you are doing is BUILDING THEIR ENDURANCE!" Hmmm... (her dogs are much more relaxed. Healthy, but relaxed.) Dog slimed frisbees is definitely a thing. I always carry microfiber cloths to wipe my hands every so often. My favorite frisbee right now is a cloth one from a brand called "Max Power Planet". Easy to get lots of range with and they seem pretty durable. One of our dogs broke a tooth catching one of the "pro" ones so no more of those for us!

Maybe some light garden grip gloves or disposable cooking gloves and then a washable canvass grocery type bag. Carry the frisbee or ball and gloves clean in bag to play site. Then slip on gloves pick it all up and stuff it in bag. Then toss the entire thing including ball, toy, even frisbee, on delicate cycle in wash. Have 2-3 bag/glove sets ready to go. The washable bag also blocks the ball/frisbee from view.

If that's not enough buffer from having contact with the mess, consider adding a hand towel or rags to the bag, to wipe the Frisbee off with before putting it in your carry bag? I mean, that's probably getting more involved than you're interested in, but it might be another idea to explore!

13:30 I have a (standard size) Aussie and one of those paw cleaner cup things and in my experience it works really well! I don’t use soap - just water inside - the cleaning is done via spinning the cup around when his paw is in there (there’s like a cleaning mat / brush thing inside) and that gets it clean. It also worked great when I had to clean some gum that was completely stuck all over his paw once (used olive oil inside for that one).

I've used a Chuck-it stick for years. Saves me touching the gross-balls and saves my back from unnecessary strain. The blue one is the shorty, there is a slightly longer orange one. Don't put'em down till you've tried 'em! I had a Border Collie for 16 years. After about 9 years he started rejecting the Frisbee, I think his mouth had gotten tender, so I had to switch to balls. the Chuck-it made that easy. I now have an 18 month old MAS and he is a ball chaser more than a Frisbee catcher. Check-it good for 2 generations of my dogs.

Clip him and we are gone. Once he transitionned to the frisbee he understood that last one meant that after we would clip him and go home.

I have a border collie who has always been a ball dog and so I use the chuck-it religiously, what I’ve ended up doing to compete play is letting her carry the ball initially after we finish throwing and she usually reaches a point where she will abandon the ball after a bit of carrying it and trying to get me to pick it up to throw a few more times, so when she abandons it that’s my cue to pick it up with the chuck-it and by that point she knows we’ve fully done playing, so you could try having Frankie carry the ball for a bit after you’ve resumed your walk… also I’ve used the paw wash things, and they work okay? It’s not as good on dogs with smaller paws cause they don’t naturally reach the bristles well, ended up being easier to use a towel in my opinion

Indigo reminds me so much of my mini Skye in looks and temperament, while Frankie reminds me of my regular Aussie,, Aussbee, especially in terms of energy. Having them solve puzzles and learn tricks is one way to burn up the excess energy. Also, they enjoy "herding" inanimate objects. Scattering items such as empty soda bottles about is an easy way to keep them occupied and focused as they gather the items together.. Some boarding kennels on farms actually will allow them to use their natural instincts to herd sheep or ducks. They have a need to "organize" items (toys, food bowls, wrappers, treats, whatever they consider valuable) in carefully placed arrangements that make sense to them. This burns off the owner's energy in retrieving the items when straightening up.

I have a chuck it frisbee and a zee dog leash that I wear across my body like you do when we’re walking off leash. When my Aussie is done playing fisbo I will shake the dirt off of it and just loop it through the leash so I don’t have to touch it. At first it was hard to get my aussie to disengage and he kept jumping on me for the frisbee. When he would do this I would gently push him off of me and re direct him. It took a couple walks, but with time he has learned that when the frisbee is looped through the leash it’s not play time. When it’s off the leash he knows it’s go time and he gets to play. Not sure if this is helpful or not but I hope it helps! We love watching your videos!

Dirty Paw tip: *We've always filled a small water bottle or half gallon milk type jug with hot soapy water (dawn dish soap) or (pet shampoo) *to wash our pups dirty paws after walks/before we go in the house & it works really well and their paws come out very clean! It especially works well for things like sticky sap & mud, but also works great on the rear end/ hindlegs if needed without much effort. *We prefill & leave it at home ready to go so its right there on the porch ready to use w/ a towel for drying when we return home.. *Also we carry a simple inexpensive washable drawstring bag or simple nylon crossbody for poop bags, toys & or treats or leashes etc. so you can easily put away when done. Out of sight out of mind for the pups & easy to carry home. ***Our tri color mini aussie is almost 9 mos. old & a TERRIBLE walker (((hyper reactive/ pulls like a sled dog & cannot contain himself from barking around other dogs)), a massive challenge for sure b/c he can be so good at home- he excels at somethings but terrible at others, it's interesting to see where we all struggle differently with each pup!!

I've been training my now-2.5 yr old Aussie x Maremma chaos beast with Susan Garrett's methods. She's probably closer to Indie than Frankie in terms of general energy/desire to play, but our challenge is that it's been a massive struggle to get her to develop that "off" switch. What I've discovered (this may be kindergarten level stuff you've known for a long time since you've obviously done a lot of very successful work with both dogs) is just how nuanced my understanding of what she's truly responding to needs to be, and how nuanced my mechanics need to be, when trying to modify behaviours that are driven by her instincts as the offspring of two working farm dogs. In my case, that means I really, REALLY needed the extended Recallers online coaching program - I NEED the video coaching to help me identify & correct what I'm doing wrong/sub-optimally, and to have the coaches point out what I'm missing in terms of what my dog is "telling" me with her body language and tiny nuances in her behaviour. But another person/dog pair might be able to nail it down with just the KZbin videos (I tried that for the first 2 years and accomplished incredible things... just... the off switch wasn't one of those things lol). We're making real progress now - (omg thank god... /collapse) - and I hope you find the solution for Frankie. Because clearly, he gets enough exercise. And sure, more exercise is super important! But if he doesn't have that "off" switch, it's a brain thing not a physical exercise thing, and it's better for his ongoing mental health for him to be able to shake off fixation like that. I saw elsewhere that you mentioned you usually do a bunch of brain stuff before you start throwing his ball/Frisbee, and you also mentioned you know part of the process might also be to bring the Chuck It with you on EVERY excursion but not always use it... might be worthwhile to NOT keep it out of sight in the house and train through that with him, BEFORE he has an opportunity to develop a fixation/addiction?

Oh, the Chuck-It thrower. My first Aussie would go all day after the whistling Chuck-It ball. But you are right, you don't have to touch the ball. My current Aussies, have different opinions about the ball retrieval. My older one will chase the Chuck-It ball, but my younger one would rather you throw a soft ball, without the thrower. And yes, you can throw the ball farther with the Chuck-It. And make him run more with less throwing. Ha! He sacked you. Mine has that ability to ring the bells too, when you aren't expecting it. You need a cup for dog walks. We do use the fabric frisbees, more than the rubber Kong one. They still get wet, but when I am not thrilled about wet frisbees, I throw on a pair of rubberized work gloves. Yeah, not fashionable in the park, but cleaner hands. We do use the Paw Plunger when feet are dirty, or in allergy season, and they do work, just keep clean water in it.

Such a funny video bc it’s so relatable as a border collie owner!! What I do is, I hide a tennis ball between large rocks right by where I play fetch with her and leave it there hidden when I leave. And I wear shoes I can kick the ball with.. then I’m not touching a gross ball, she doesn’t overexcited when we leave the house cus i don’t have a ball on me! It’s weird but it works for me😹 frisbee is too large and expensive to leave behind so I save that for a more special occasion😬

From a dog trainer (take away from it, what you want) 😊 -I doubt the issue is that he's not getting enough exercise (unless you have changed how much you give him) the issue is that he's not able to settle afterwards. Place training or crate training will be needed. By adding MORE running all that will be achieved is a very fit dog that's become an adrenaline junkie. -From a dogs joint pov, Frisbee is better than a ball. Less sharp stopping movements. -To signify the end of play. Bring a bag with you for a couple months. Whilst he is looking at you, put the Frisbee in the bag and say 'all done'. Reward him when he disenganges. But never bring the Frisbee back out once you said 'all done'. This is then transitioned into having the Frisbee in the bag, wait until disengaged and calm then take out and hold between armpit. Move back into bag is he is too fixated. I'd also reccomend having the Frisbee within his sight within the home. In sight, not reachable. To desensitize him to looking at it. ❤

I have also a crazy Aussie. Therefore I avoid throwing the frisbee or a ball without her doing a trick before and not playing too long. Try dummy training where you hide dummies and the dog has to find them or make him stay, throw the dummy and then release him and let him bring the dummy to you. It makes him use his nose and he will be more tired then from running. Also teaching him tricks will make him tired. Half an hour of mental stimulation is more exhausting then 1 hour of running. This bread does hardly get tired from just running

Honestly, if you don't like the idea of getting stern with Frankie, ignoring him when play is over like you are is your best bet. With Aussies (I have one, too😂), our attention, even just quick eye contact, is SO reinforcing to them, and it will increase any behavior you acknowledge. I use this method all the time, but my Aussie also understands a firm "no" and settles immediately. The plus side of them loving our attention is that just a stern voice is usually all is needed for punishment. Works great for us!

I do place training on random objects, have him hold down stays, leg weaves while we are walking. Doing impulse control while playing fribee or with his herding ball. Also have to teach them to chill even if they want to keep going. You know youve given them enough and aussies are pushy so if they know they can demand your attention then they cant turn their brain off
