Horten VI von Markus Frey

Markus Frey hat es gewagt: den Bau einer Horten VI im unglaublichen Maßstab von 1:1,5, also mit einer Spannweite von 16,160 m. In der FMT 11/2021 Ausgabe haben wir ihn interviewt und über die Konstruktion und den Bau des Rumpfs gesprochen. In der FMT 12/2021 folgen der Flügelbau, die Abnahme durch das Schweizer Bundesamt und der Erstflug. Und hier kommt das begleitende Video von Markus Nussbaumer.

I've never posted a comment before on KZbin but the sight -- and tragic demise of this classic beauty I found very moving. If ever a machine better encapsulated elegance and pure grace, I'd love to see it. Congratulations to the team who created this magnificent plane. I hope you complete the re-build, and fervently, that the wing stall is resolved.

Whoever did your camera work deserves a lot of credit. Keeping the airplane in frame all the time was not an easy feat. I congratulate your cameraman on his or her skill.

Years of flying conventional full scale and models teaches you that to recover from a spin you must have an effective, functional rudder. It only took one flying wing model, my first, to prove the point in a spectacular and expensive manner. Things have improved. 😊 Love your work. Keep at it.

It has to be known that original Horten could do two 360° turns without enabling the pilot to stop it. This is why a rudder was necessitated on this type. A French patent was deposited in Germany in the middle of the 30's. John K Northrop encountered the same problem with his superb prototypes YB 35 and YB 49 . Famous test pilot Edwards sadly lost his life with his crew due to such a problem. Edwards AFB is named in his memory. It's not until B 2 Spirit ,due to the brilliant work of an engineer,that those rudderless wing problems could be solved by an adapted program. Electronics might be fastest to react than the human brain...sometimes . Anyhow, sincere congratulations for this beautiful model, which crashed by design,and not due to pilot's error.

Thank you for the great presentation Yesterday Markus at the Modellflug Symposium Winterthur. The whole build process was detailed and all the flights shown and explained. You should have included the crash and then this would have millions of views by now. ;)

Model flew just like the full scale version, very susceptible to tip stall and spin. This was a classic flying wing spin. Gotta get the nose down immediately. Might need a slightly more forward CG location. Triangular shaped elevons with a reverse taper (0 chord at the root of the elevon and 100% of the chord at the tip) has been found to solve this type of problem. This approach also provides proverse yaw in the turn to help prevent spins due to the spanwise flow caused by side-slipping.

Very sorry to see such a beautiful bird go down. My work on Horten-style wings suffered many spins. I put small fences on the wings inboard of the elevons. That stopped spins. This was the advice of Klingberg. The swept wing causes spanwise flow at high angles of attack. Horten also used fences in some post-war designs.

Indeed, your comment hits the nail. The Mig 19 is a good example, a large wing fence. This avoids the sabre-dance.

It seemed to have no adverse yaw. That I think is the reason it flew and looked so elegant.

Ein Wahnsinnsprojekt, ich hoffe der Aufschlag war sanft und er ist zu retten. Meine Horten Erfahrung ist, lieber den Schwerpunkt etwas weiter vorne.

Da muss ich dich entäuschen. Wie in der FMT zu lesen, ist beim Abfangen aus dem Trudeln die linke Tragfläche abgebrochen... Schade um das traumhafte Flugzeug und die viele Arbeit. Allerdings muß ich auch sagen, dass mir als ehemaligem Werkstattleiter im Luftsportverband Bayern im Baubericht und im Video ein paar Dinge aufgefallen sind, die ich bei einem Flugzeug in der Größenordnung durchaus für hinterfragenswert halte.

Habe eine Horten 4 mit 6 Metern Spannweite. Es hat sehr lange gedauert den richtigen Schwerpunkt und die richtige Differenzierung zwischen Höhen und Querruder heraus zu bekommen. Die bei Modellen mit konventionellem Leitwerk gut funktionierende Methode, lieber etwas Kopflastig, funktionierte bei meiner Horten nicht. Dann schiebt sie nur.

What a beautiful model. I have been making flying wing gliders for decades. Nothing as impressive as this but the key to stability is wing twist. And more than you think. The Hortens called it the bell shaped lift distribution. Prandlt also knew this secret. It’s why hang gliders don’t spin out of control. The airframe is stable if built with the right amount of washout, twist in the wings. Otherwise you need drag flaps. It’s a shame more builders don’t have success with tailless designs because they are efficient and beautiful.
