I made an error on the hardiness for the river birch. It is hardy in zones 4-9. It does like it's own space and it needs additional water or it will definitely loose it's leaves in the late summer.

Your trees are beautiful! I used to plant foreign trees but started planting more native ones after reading about their benefits for creatures great and small. 🐞🐦🐿️. Pre- native, I planted a line of cryptomeria as a wind break that are beautiful and haven't had bag worms as Leyland Cypress around here do. However, in the winter the wind blows tons of 1-2 foot branchlets off the trees that get snagged in the grass and are miserable to get up!!! ☹️. Love the ending with your dog, she's a sweetheart! ❤️😀

Beautiful collection. I couldn't imagine moving away & leaving all this behind. But at least you'll know what you want to plant again. And many more new things, too. Thanks for the tour ~ seeing the variety of growth habits here is very useful. The pansy redbud is exactly what I've been looking for, for my small backyard. That tree is fantastic!

I've planted a Dawn Redwood on the corner of our lot by the street. Wow it will get huge. Didn't realize it would grow that quickly in 20 yrs! Guess that's okay though since there is no overhead electric lines where we are. Interesting on the Yoshino. Loving the height because I need it for what I am trying to screen (train tracks)and I am okay with the bottom being thin as we have a fence to block out a train track behind the house and I think the Yoshinos will be great for this application.

My inlaws have a massive golden rain tree in their yard that is supposedly only 15 years young. We must not have those beetles in Louisiana because there's hundreds of whips growing everywhere!

That Forest Pansy Redbud is JUST what I’ve been looking for! Love the Myrtles too and wish I could plant one of those gorgeous white oak dogwood-but I don’t think it would survive our harsh Iowa winters. Our tree population here in Cedar Rapids was decimated by the Derecho (land hurricane) that hit us on August 10th. Researching and planning now to start from scratch in a bare yard this spring... thanks so much for sharing all of your gorgeous beauties!

About 14/15 years ago I bought a River Birch and just set it down beside house- for a long time. Well, it took root THROUGH the plastic, and there it has remained, grown and prospered, INCHES from house, and I love it, but...it is getting huge and TALL. I wonder now what to DO...GREAT VID btw! You are SO smart!

You must be down south to be able to get that pine straw. If you are NOT in the south, where did you get that pine straw? I'm in Pa and can't get it, unless I pay a fortune for a semi truck to bring it to me from the southern US. When I was in Florida a while ago, I bought some and loaded my bff's truck with it, it is long rotted away now, but, it was easy (lightweight) to spread, and kept weeds away really well. I can get eastern white pine needles in fall at the "leaf dump", but that stuff is much less durable and its thin needles. I'm in zone 6a, but, 2 attempts at growing willow oak has failed for me. I have a impressive trunked Dawn Redwood here. I can't grow Crepe Myrtle here, I have a "seven sons flower" which is a shrub/small tree that has bark that looks like the crepe myrtle, but has white flowers. Thanks for sharing.

I haven't seen any other yoshino cryptomerias that were so bare at the bottom like that. Was it because yours was so close to the house with a lot of shade around it? Would radicans be any different in that regard?
@NatureMan15 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the video! I have been meaning to look up some of these trees. I do think 'Heritage' River Birch is hardy in Zones 4-9, not 3-7. Since it is more heat tolerant it should tolerate the summers down south much better.

Thanks. I meant to change it. I copy and paste those labels from one tree to the next. Leaves me vulnerable to not changing something.

Have you ever seen a Eucalyptus Polyanthemos tree grow in the south? I live in a zone 8b but I can't seem to find any garden center that carries them nor can I find a supplier that sells any online that ship to NC.

Thanks for sharing trees at your home. I have planted 8 trees and 21 shrubs since beginning to watch your channel in 2016. Should I fertilize my deciduous trees in the fall after they lose their leaves? How about evergreens (arborvitaes and magnolia)? I do fertilize in the late winter/early fall. Thanks

Awesome. Thanks for watching. I only fertilize in the late winter. I think that slow and steady is always best

I planted a snow fountain weeping cherry this spring. It got a fungus that made all the leaves turn brown. I treated the tree with copper fungicide a clipped all the leaves. Have you ever seen that on a weeping snow fountain and if so did it recover the following year?
@JimPutnam5 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen it, but make sure that clean up the leaves after they drop off. Weirdly, it could bloom and still be in trouble. I have seen that happen many times. The new foliage will tell the tale.
@johnnyutah10535 жыл бұрын
HortTube with Jim Putnam I got all the leaves up and removed all the leaves so it looks pretty dormant right now. I even put some compost down around it. Be a bummer if it dies but if it does It will give me a reason to plant a vanilla twist redbud or a lavender twist redbud.

Just left a garden center where the guy told me to stay away from blue conifers in my area (7b, just north of Atlanta). Was wondering your opinion. I have a Fat Albert spruce, which is doing fine even in the heat which is why I was surprised
@JimPutnam5 жыл бұрын
Most blue conifers don't do well in the south. Arizona Cypress is an exception. That is not to say that there aren't spaces that they would potentially thrive. I have always considered the Atlanta area more temperate than Raleigh. Same zone, but our high temperatures tend to be higher than yours.
