Love this type of video. Just created a new bed in my backyard by spraying the bermuda (which was thin from shade of our fence) and compost+mulched over a large area along our privacy fence. Next step is hoping the bermuda stays away and mapping out the plants, so would love to see a part two or follow up on plant selections/spacing!

I have two under my awning (by my house). It’s doing surprisingly well! I’m curious what it will do in another year. We did plant it with azalea mix and give it soil acidifier. Honestly I think sun until 11 is good.

Omg Jim you’re in my hometown! Please tell me that you can go to the Dallas Arboretum! It’s beautiful this time of year with the pumpkins. You came during a good week. It’s been torture for the last five months. Tell us what you think of our clay! That Bermuda grass will be so much happier with the trees limbed up. It doesn’t like shade. I don't know about Texas but in our area, you have to be really careful about planting trees under power lines. The power company has the right to (and will) come trim/butcher trees they think are ANY danger to the power lines. They have to do that to preemptively minimize the risk of storm damage.

Ugh, Bermuda. Spraying is only way to eliminate it where not wanted unless you want to be a prisoner to constantly digging it back out. Leave behind a tiny 1/2" long segment of root when digging out and it will root & regrow with a vengeance. 😣

Fun. As a Pacific northwester thinking of Texas, I would want several trees. Not huge ones but definitely a way to introduce cooling, relaxing shade. Also, the area BEGS for a water feature. Perhaps a small pond by the seating area--more edges for plants! 💚 Please keep us updated on the progress.

Hey Jim. Yes that yard is screaming for curve edges. It will definitely soften the look & more pleasing to the eyes. Also I would definitely add tall & mid size varieties of evergreens around the fence area.. layered with flowering shrubs & whimsical grasses. The fence is a real eye soar. But that’s me…

Loved seeing you layout a residential space. While I'm excited to see the new garden property evolve, it isn't quite the same as what a homeowner would face in terms of layout and design choices. This was perfect. Would love to see you tackle a few more of these new layout scenarios with different property sizes, challenges, etc. If you are in the mood to tackle a situation with heavy clay, drainage problems, tree coverage that is not full shade but not full sun either, feel free to come to Memphis. Ive got the perfect challenge for you to showcase. I've even begun several techniques to tackle the soil problem: wood chips in one area and tiller radish with crimson clover cover crops in another area to see if it can break up the clay soil any. Talk about an experiment. LOL

I find this video helpful, thank you. I wish you had spoken more about exact plants that can survive our weather (I’m in San Antonio). I’ve tried various things with little luck, so far the Bermuda grass is the most successful thing, so I’d be afraid to kill it for more garden beds…

If their soil is mostly clay and/or loam, they should do just fine with the new design. If they have mostly limestone in their soil, like we do here in Central Texas, good luck! LOL! We have a 30'x70' lawn area (Bermuda!) in our backyard that you can't push a stake down more than an inch before encountering rock.

I like your design. If there are windows on the side of the house it would be nice to have something to look at out the window. Maybe a climbing vine or even a window box hanging off the fence. Seems like we need a seating area on the far side of the yard - in the shade. Thanks for sharing!

This was so helpful! I have always been daunted less by what I plant individually and more about how to turn square outdoor space into plots. It was impossible for me to see how to zone my own front yard until I saw you do it here, thank you! I wish I could use a drone like that. All the google maps I've checked don't show our outdoor space very well. Can you rent a drone? I also liked how you talked about the slope, the moisture, and that kind of zoning that is really important when making some of the most important decisions that are happening even at the earliest phase of a project like this. Thank you and I hope you will do this again!

Look for your county's GIS system, where you can search your parcel by real estate tax ID number. They might have an aerial/satellite view of your land.
