As exciting and fun as it is to be in the garden, remember to take regular breaks and stay hydrated especially in the sun and heat.

Jim, the amount of knowledge you share with your viewers is amazing….Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to learn from you….sometimes you say things off-the-cuff in a matter of fact way and I’m sure you don’t realize the little gems of wisdom you’re casually throwing out…as if everyone already knew….☺️👍🏽❤️

Love my Cosmos, which yellow finches also love, as well as my coneflowers & goldenrod. I learned something from my Dad, when I’d asked why he didn’t cut back his lavender plants. He left them for yellow finches too, so I’m trying that this year to find out for myself. Thanks for your videos, a wealth of knowledge! Watching from up North near Niagara Falls, Canada.

August already! This year is zooming by way too fast for me. The Hummingbird eating gnats amazed me. I didn't know they did that. Always learning something new. Thanks for these videos, Jim.

Like the format of this video - you out in the garden showing how and what you would do regarding the various chores on this month’s list. Squirrel! In this case: hummingbird! You remind me of me. Doesn’t matter what I might be doing, I’ll stop in my tracks to observe a hummer or any other bird for that matter. One of my favorite birds, but only seen and heard in Spring and Fall in my yard, is the catbird. I love hearing it in many of your videos! Right now, I hear an Eastern Towhee in the background while a male cardinal makes an appearance behind you in the veggie garden. (Yes, I’m obsessed)!

I would absolutely love to see a video on the difference between what is under vs over watered especially on newer plants in our landscapes. I think we tend to over water but the symptoms of both look almost the same to us newbie gardeners!

Jim, thank you so much for being my “guide” on what I should be doing. I was away for 3 weeks, but my garden held up pretty well because of your tips. Thank you so much!!!

When I worked in the industry, I would tell clients that there's a difference between watering & throwing water at a plant. Other than annuals, deeper & less frequent watering makes deeper roots & happier plants. Tomatoes have done well for me, beans are slow & my peppers haven't done well at all. Counting on you to get me through to the fall!

Great tips, I have several plants in containers that I plan to plant in Sept. I have them throughout the yard. Going to move them now to one location for easier watering, sounds obvious but yet never thought about that haha! Thanks for the useful recommendations Jim!

Great motivation to do some planning for next year. I need to be more strategic about what I start from seed. I often run out of space and too much languishes because I can’t get it potted up in time. But I love growing from seed so I get carried away. Time for some better planning!

I have a little nursery of Japanese Maple seed sprouts I gathered from cleaning up under my big ones, they are tucked away in a shady spot. The weeds always win in August for me but I'm steady pulling. At least with the rain everything is still green. Your garden is looking great.

awesome info - thanks for the encouragement to prune (as appropriate) ... one of the hardest things for me as a gardener ... I love pruning trees & shrubs, but cutting back perennials and annuals is emotionally taxing - hahaha !!!! Looking forward to this coming Autumn and some cooler, less humid days but 'til then we shall keep on gardening (pretty much just weeding at this point) - have a great evening and an awesome upcoming week !!!

Just found you, glad I did, I have a lot to learn, haven’t been here that long and it sure is different from New England! I was wondering where you buy your plants. I have visited a few nurseries and found a few very expensive and a few where my plants died or had some kind of bug. I thought I knew so much, maybe I did, but now I don’t know a thing.

Red bud tree has a problem. How do I treat it? Michigan 5b. When I tried to wipe little white spots off they smeared. So it is probably a fungus. Do you think this will cause its death? White spots are only on old branches.

I have a ‘plant nursery’ in my driveway too. 🙂 Do you use any insect control? In Texas 8a I’m having a terrible grasshopper year. It looks like the extra cold winter didn’t hurt them at all. They’re really going after the hibiscus and skullcap in the garden. 😢

Love watching your videos! I’m new to landscaping this year and really enjoy it but have some learning to do. I planted some daylilys about a month ago and realized the spot is not received as much sun as I thought. Would transplanting them to a sunnier location this September not be a good idea?
@canuckviolet33223 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have a lot of daylilies that get 2+ hrs and still perform surprisingly well. They were in sun when planted 15 yrs ago, and the location has become continuously more shady. I divide and fertilize and they keep on going. You can absolutely transplant in Sept but you may want to consider leaving a test plant in your original location to see how they fare.

Do you have any tips for trimming shrubs once you have put down your mulch? In the spring I try to trim before I mulch but in the summer when they need another trim all the cuttings fall on the mulch and makes it look bad. Just thought you might have a tip. Love your videos!!!
@MelodyHopkins3 жыл бұрын
Spread a tarp/old sheet or something similar around the shrub before you trim it. I have about 120 feet of privacy fence covered with confederate jasmine that I have to regularly keep trimmed and that's what I do. Then you can just pick up it up with the trimmings and dispose of them.
