Do you cut off the dead flowers when all the petals fall off or do you let it alone until it's next bloom?

I have red knockout roses that are doing great....bought another red and two yellows this year...the red is doing good...the yellows just died...all planted in the same general area...noticed when I was driving around that nobody else around here has yellow ones...I'm in Virginia and it doesn't make any sense to me.

Do the blooms last a while or do they fall apart quickly? Do they do well in windy gardens?

Hi Jim, after watching this in May I planted 7 bushes. I deep water them once a week and I have yellow leaves on some of the bushes. Is that a sign that I am doing something wrong?

Hello. I'm new to gardening. I just bought 2 packs of bare root knock out' s from Costco. It's mid March and nights are still cold in Maryland so I've decided to pot my plants until I can get the ground ready for them. The instructions say to prune the canes down to 6 inches above the union before planting in the ground. Since I've potted them and I'm keeping them indoors until i prepped the ground for them, should I prune them anyway?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 6 жыл бұрын
I would prune them and I would not keep them indoors except when it is below freezing.

HortTube with Jim Putnam so, keep them in the pots and leave them outside too? Nights get below 35 degrees. Should I cover them with plastic bags?
@JimPutnam

I meant to bring them in when it drops below freezing
@Eager2BFit

HortTube with Jim Putnam yes understood. I just assumed that because they are in pots, that they would have to be covered in order to keep the soil at a feasable temp. I'll prune and put them in my cold sun room. Thanks again

I have recently moved into a new addition with lots of red clay, I did see one of your videos on amending soil which was very helpful. I planted my sunny knockouts early March and have seen very little blooms. I am curious as to if this might be due to light or just them simply getting adjusted. When planted they were getting sun from around 6:30 a.m. till about 2:30 p.m. Now due to the willows back behind the fence they're getting a little bit more shade in the afternoon. I live in Oklahoma where afternoons are extremely hot. Your videos are extremely helpful and informative I appreciate what you do!

It is probably just an adjustment period slowing them down. Transplant shock. Sounds like plenty of light.

My two new Sunny Knock-Out Rose bushes almost died this summer - they were infected with black spot fungus with the horrible yellowed leaves and then they were attacked by aphids. So much for disease resistant! But I consistently sprayed them with soapy water every day and pruned off and removed all the diseased leaves and canes. Finally, I turned the big fabric pots on their sides and used forceful sprays of water to knock off the aphids. It took three weeks, but it looks as if I have saved them. They are putting out their early September flowering now.

So, Jim, after all this "rose drama" over the Sunnys, how can I prep them for winter? Because my son and husband are busily building a new barn, I can't figure out where to put the roses into the ground. They are in 5 gallon fabric pots now. I was thinking of moving them into 15 gallon fabric pots, putting a mixture of aged fir bark and peat moss into the bottom of the new, larger pot, and then putting in the bush with its current garden soil, topped with another 1" of peat moss and finally 1" of the aged fir bark. We live right on the border of zone 5 and zone 6 in Connecticut. I know I am not supposed to fertilize these bushes now, b/c they need to go dormant. What is this "super-phosphate" I have heard about? Thanks for looking at all these "beginner" questions.

+Tina It is difficult to overwinter things in containers outside where you are. Most of the nurseries will put containers under plastic. I think the 15 gallon container is a good idea. Maybe cover it with a sheet on the coldest days

Jim, thank you for your prompt reply. After showing my questions to you to my husband, he promised to dig out a good deep trench/holes for my rose bushes with the back hoe he'll be renting again in 2 weeks, so that I don't have to keep buying bigger containers!

Thanks, Jim. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the asparagus which unexpectedly sprouted and grew after I negligently tossed the "dead" whatchamacallems into two containers with nothing-special soil. And they grew.
