I knew clothes especially pants can be problematic if you use a wheelchair but the idea of back pockets causing skin sores was a new idea. Also my mind is blown of the thought that a limp foot can get crinkled up in a shoe. Thank you so much for making these videos not just to help others who use a wheelchair but to help others understand your struggles.

Im not paralysed but I suffer with a connective tissue disorder and chronic pain, I live in sweats as anything like buttons, seams, zips etc pressing into me hurts. labels make me itch like mad. I cant even scratch an itch through clothing because it hurts, so i need to be able to easily scratch an itch under clothing. My hands also dont work well so a button and fly on jeans is a no go now. even creases hurt, like in a bed sheet or pillowcase, I have to keep smoothing things out.

What I do is take a pair of cheap and comfy yoga pants or leggings, cut it to about the length of boxers and sew the legs of whatever jeans or patterned pants I like but couldn't wear as they are. It's really not noticeable at all if you pair them with a slightly long t-shirt that covers the part were both fabrics meet! I don't know if this would work just as well for men as it does for women, but I'm putting it out there just in case it helps 🙂 P.S. Great video, Richard! I found your channel a little while ago and I'm delighted by how real yet positive and encouraging you are. As someone who was born with a disability, I really appreciate all content that shows people we can live fulfilling lives, and also that becoming a wheelchair user doesn't mean your life is over. What a good idea definitely going to give that a try I think if I use thick joggers but leave the joggers intact put the denim over them they would be super warm trousers thanks for the idea I've done the opposite before use the waistband pockets etc of jeans chop off legs and a attach material to make a long maxi skirt (that was years ago though pre chair) With my actual jeans I extend the back by enlarging the Diamond ish shape bit that's just below the waistband and I put elastic in the back half of the waistband while I'm in there you can also put tiny tucks behind the knee so they sit better

This is cool. I'm waiting on my chair. It's going to be bright green. The nurse and my husband were asking "are you sure.are you sure? You can't change it once you have it" I'm a colours person. And my thought was simply IF people are looking already, they now have something to look at (I'm gonna get eco stickers too). I do wear a lot of black and grey but it always has to have colourful text or images. Coloured underwear, sock etc. The joggers thing is interesting. I'm a jeggings person (thick kind) or army/utility kind (those aren't ideal for chair though). Definitely going to make me look more into suitable trousers for the chair (I hate having to pull my trousers up mid roll).

I've been injured for over 17 years. Almost the entire time I've been rocking bright pink spokes on my Spinergy wheels. It's my favorite color and I don't have to worry about the color drawing attention to me anyway. I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall and like 235 lbs. Between my size, my overall boisterousness, and the mullet I usually have, I have quite a presence that the bright pink doesn't have much to add to. 🤣😋😛🦄🦄🎀

One easy tip for reducing bulky/hard seams from back pockets is to simply cut them off. Patch pockets are just sewn on top of the material and only require snipping off (carefully!) the thread that is holding them on. In some cases, you may be able to see where the pocket was, particularly if they were color dyed after production, but who's gonna see it anyway? You're sitting on it!

I’ve had a totally different opinion on jeans. I’ve been in a chair since I was 14 (way back in 1985) and could probably count the number of times in 34 years that I have not worn jeans. In fact, for a job , a dress shirt and tie were required, but I asked for “permission” to wear nice, matching, unfaded black jeans. I’ve even worn “maternity jeans” after surgeries for the extra room and higher waist. My jean-wearing rational (other than just liking jeans) are: 1. Good protection from scrapes and bruises on my legs from bumping into objects like desks, tables, walls, and the chair itself. Also, when I’m sitting on the ground gardening or working on something I can’t do from the chair, jeans provide better butt-abrasion protection. Sitting on a hot car seat can and will give serious burns. I find jeans more heat resistant as well. And, the jeans themselves don’t get damaged as easily. 2. Provide an appearance of “thickness” to my skinny legs. Slacks and thinner materials make my legs look like when a piece of paper gets stuck on a car radio antenna. :) 3. Less “wrinkled” or “bunched” up look while sitting. 4. Hide “continence” issues better. (Except with devices of course) 5. With part of my pelvis missing, I find jeans “fit” and stay up better. There are drawbacks with jeans. They are damned near impossible to pull up while in the chair. I need to find a place to lean or lay on to pull them up. And obviously, there are times you just don’t wear jeans like at weddings, funerals, and in front of a Judge. (Not that ive ever been in front of a Judge, but I probably wouldn’t wear jeans if I were!) But, this is just MY 2¢. Different people with different reasons and different issues of being in a chair require some unique and personal adaptation techniques. Shoes, too. With small floppy feet, I tend to buy a couple sizes larger and in some kind of “high top” so they don’t fall off! After seeing this video, I might go try some real pants! It’s too bad that a men’s skirt isn’t a thing (except in Scotland :) ). I can really see benefits of a nice men’s skirt in terms of comfort, ease-of-dressing, and temperature when sitting all day.
@Wheels2Walking5 жыл бұрын
This is a really well thought out comment. Thanks for sharing your opinion for all of us Men’s skirts would be pretty awesome 😂

Well heck. I'm gonna have to try putting pants on like that! I can't get pants back on in my chair at all. I either have to transfer to a toilet, chair, bed, etc or literally abandon my chair which is why I have to be really careful making sure I wear super stretchy pants on public but at home I'll literally abandon my chair drag myself up on my knees so basically my stomach and upper body is hanging over my chair and I'm using one arm to wrap it through the hoke between the backrest and seat cushion holding on for dear life with one hand to stay on my knees... Or at least kind of on my knees and pull them up with the other hand

I never stopped wearing suits but found I have to wear trousers about 2 waist sizes too big to allow for a little grace in the groin area. It is hard however to find a suit jacket that is not restrictive when it comes to pushing. I'm a 48" chest and I have big shoulders and lats which make me look strange enough with my 30" waist I buy 34" trousers but modern suit styles are no good for me. Supper skinny and slim fit makes me look like 10lb of beef in a 5lb bag. I need to go old school and as such the best fitting suit I have was given to me by an older friend and I had the trousers and sleeves shortened to suit my height of 5'9 instead of his 6'4.

If we didn’t go to the mall and actually shopped around at discount stores we could have easily got this for less than $60 you’re right though. LA is expensive AF Happy to hear you took something away though!

You gotta change how you think about clothing. You will wear everything sitting down (mostly. Depends if you use parttime or fulltime). Think about when you wear skirts or dresses they gotta be long enough. And try to sit on some of the fabric so it doesn't get caught in the wheels. Honestly little things do it. Wear comfy Jeans and roll the legs up (eps. If you are BI ;) ) , wear a necklace, buy these pretty shoes!

I have a question to all those paralysed Do your legs or wherever go stiffer or more ‘floppy’
@Wheels2Walking5 жыл бұрын
Floppy. Some get really stiff over time if you don’t take care of them. :/

i have always had the worst trouble wearing any long sleeves in my wheelchair because no matter what i do, they get dirty from rubbing my wheels, and if i roll them up, neatly, or in a roll roll up my arm they slide down and they pull, its uncomfortable and they get dirty, what do you do ? because when itssuper hot and sunny out its nice to wear a thin thin breathable long sleeve shirt so you dnt get quit as hot and you dont sun burn... and i love to put ona nice shirt and tie when i went out, you know, pre covid days haha, i miss that, but i tell ya if i had to use my wheels, no matter whati did, my damn sleeves would be getting in the way and getting dirty or even wet.... help please, what do you guys do to solve that issue, i notice your bro there rockin that suit, owning it ! and i dont see it ( the coat, the sleeves, ect. ) getting on his wheels and such , seriously, help, what do you do man

Awww man, I was hoping that Danny had solved the problem of it being practically impossible to wear a nice looking suit jacket or sport coat. He does look great in those runway shots, but just like my own personal problem and the jacket ends up lying on the wheels. Not a huge problem for a photo shoot, but doesn't make for much longevity in a very expensive piece of clothing.

Him and Wes Hamilton have! They get the jackets shortened by a tailor. Check out Wes’s queer eye episode on Netflix for more info!

Tight legged trousers are a no-no if you have a leg bag. Also, suits are a pain because the jackets aren't made for sitting down or pushing your chair - nor are they good if you have a curvature of the spine. Plus, you get dirty cuffs from pushing. Unless you're rich, bespoke suits are out of the reach of most Disabled people. I live in sweat pants and t-shirts because they're practical. Practical beats fashion, unless you're attractive anyway.
@Wheels2Walking5 жыл бұрын
We talk about the leg bags in the video if you remember. There are ways around it. You can get a suit jacket tailored for about $10 Not sure about the cuffs but makes sense. I’d just get those tailored and roll up my sleeves

Lil tip that probably should be common sense: if you really like a pair of pants with a zip or button on the back, don't rule it out. Cut the button off and wear em happily... just try not to put a big hole in it. That will be noticeable 😂
