Highland Park Hospital is an amazing hospital. When I lived in the area 12 years ago I spent time in that hospital and got incredible care. Truly the best of the best. My heart goes out to every person affected by this tragedy. A wonderful community that will get through this.

She fell on a patients driveway a few years ago that was all ice and it did a lot of damage to her neck. She finds herself in odd positions doing wound care and after a long day of that, she's in agony. She loves some of her patients but some older men can be obnoxious and she's just tired of it plus ALL the driving around with little payback there. I worked in healthcare for years but I was lucky to work directly with a primary care doctor that had his own business so I got a lot of free training and his practice was small so patient care was a priority. There may be a shortage of nurses but many quit.

@@MeganZopf The industry has not fully recovered from Covid-19. They are bringing back retired people just to compensate! Plus, forget about getting actual quality nursing aid staff for patients who can’t move! They need assistance to go to bathroom put their light on for help, no one comes! I had to take my mom out of her rehab facility from a car accident and care for her at home! It was very difficult for me she was in diapers with five broken ribs, a broken collarbone! But, at least I was able to care for her the best I can and her needs met! A lot of people in my moms position have no relatives near by or can take care of them, so sad!

That was just how life was then. I am 65 now so I am referring to maybe 40+ years ago. My daughter is also a single mother and my granddaughter's father has psych issues so she takes care of the patients and then her daughter. I watched my granddaughter from the time she was born until she started School. My daughter never paid for daycare. So I still have the mindset of years ago.

I used to work in an ER and know that even when they would have practice protocols to be able to handle these kinds of situations they would be serious, extensive and rigorous. Im a retired CERN who worked in one of Chicago's busiest southside hospital ERs for over 20 years. We did two to three community wide disaster drills involving all the hospitals in the area including all the trauma centers. Its quite exciting because we do it like its a real disaster. What he described here is the competence of the first responders that comes from regular training. The negative psychological effect on us workers are buffered by these redundant exercises because we become more confident each time that were able to tackle anything that happens as best as we could even when they're tragic in nature.

As a retired nurse who worked part of my career in an E.R. I am so aware of what the medical staff goes through with a situation like this. You are at the height of your competency during the initial treatment and stabilization phase. However, once it lets up, shock sets in and it is very traumatic. Also, we tend to think if a person didn't die of the wounds, they are OK. Sadly, the damage done by a high powered rifle to a person's body can/will affect the rest of their lives. So even those who lived may never be free of this horrendous moment and it will change their lives forever. Such a tragedy caused by one unbalanced person. He so obviously was a deeply troubled person. How did he get a gun?

Thank you all for your great response and it sound like it worked exactly like it should. Starting July 5 2022 Pinellas County in Florida will be going through the exact thing for practice that they actually did today. 2 times a year we go through this. I am part of the search and rescue team and we are going to be busy for the next 3 days. We are always on stand by just last month we had a mas casualty practice where where we had real actors and the complete make up department from Disney come over to Tampa and let me tell you it was unreal the job they did. One of the crew of 74 members did a live stream and we had so many calls to field because people wanted to know where this was and what they could do from the public. The general public do not have any idea how hard we in search, rescue/dive team, emergency hospitals and police/fire go through to see that everyone that can be saved are saved. It clearly again happened here that the practice paid out. Again Great Job to all the staff and our prayers go from our teams to the families and the injured as well as those who died in this senseless act.

I am investing in two medical kits for my car. I live in the area. We also need to teach all children to swim or water safety in all schools. How to be safe in a lock down. Teach your kids to use a bullet proof vest, gas mask and helmet in a crisis. Be prepared.
