The amount of work that goes into fixing such apparently simple things is just insane. I imagine a lot of these cars were scrapped when they weren't that apprechiated and you couldn't find many to fix them...

I definitely think that's the case. Plus many were neglected from maintenance for similar reasons, cost and finding someone knowledgeable so they became even harder to repair and values of the cars dropped making it harder to want to do. Too bad indeed that all plays in
