I haven't stopped in in a while Greg, good video. Yesterday I got back into the garden after a week of absence. Needless to say with the rains we had and the warm temps, weeds were back! I decided to use the cultivator teeth to go at the weeds, usually I use the 12" oscillating hoe. My soil is pretty rocky, but I have been working on it for the last 7 years! It looks and grows pretty good now. Well after cultivating the garden I had a lot of weeds lying on top of the ground. I decided to try the disc cultivator on my wheel hoe and set the angle of the disc inward. Zoom! In a few minutes the little cultivator had buried 85-90% of the weeds that I had upended earlier. I will probably try that again! It was fun and I burned 400 calories in that one hour according to my "FIT BIT". Gardening, a low impact exercise where one eats the rewards!

We're really late getting anything going in the garden this year for a number of reasons, but yesterday I noticed flower buds forming on some of the weeds and knew it was time to DO SOMETHING before those weeds bloomed (and not wait any longer for the tractor to be fixed). Out came our antique Planet Jr. wheel hoe with an 8" Hoss oscillating blade attached (I love the fact that Hoss attachments fit the old Planet Jr's!!). An hour later I had all those big, tough, threatening weeds cleared out of a roughly 1,000-square-foot section of the garden. And I'm a middle-aged asthmatic female! Thank you again, Greg and Travis!

I'd used the plow and cultivator attachments on my double wheel hoe that I purchased earlier this year, but hadn't used the sweep attachments yet. I had some sections in the brassica section of the garden that had grown up some pretty good sized weeds I hadn't been able to hoe, just trying to get the garden in. Finally have most of the garden in and it was time to hoe this area which was looking pretty tacky, especially around the cabbage which were the first transplants that went out a couple of months ago. I watched this video and saw how you had the sweeps pointed out and separated a bit, with a cultivator sweep in the back placed in the gap. I wasn't sure how well it would work on my black gumbo soil, though. But boy did it do a great job. I was really pleased at how well it cut down just below the ground and cut the stem off the roots. Got to go back and do some hand hoeing between plants in the row yet, but the rows look so much better and the setup on this was really easy to use. So glad I have this hoe with the attachments and to have seen this video to give me some best use tips. Thanks, Greg.

In my opinion, the plows in the furrowing position work best on the single wheel hoe, especially if you like to make more than one pass. As when you come back through the same furrow to clean it up or make it dealer, the single wheel drops down into the furrow really well.

I also have a large garden that is very nice and has great soil, although it has been amended several times over the past seventeen years. The double wheel
@rajgglggl47902 жыл бұрын
According to the Planet JR instructions, you are NOT to back up the wheel hoe each stroke. It will leave an uneven soil surface. The correct technique is to push the hoe (as you were doing it), and pause (without backing up), and during that pause make any steering adjustment for the next stroke. They also said NOT to push it like a lawn mower, probably for the same reason that you need to keep it on track with the crop row.

Careful everyone... it's like McDonald's Fries... one is never enough! I now have two, and still want another one. I have a fairly large garden, more than 10,000 sq ft, and I just want dedicated wheel hoes for various things. I'm resisting, I'll be retired in a year, and I'll have more time than money. Personally I am partial to the sweeps for cultivating, but those plows are invaluable for creating a furrow, or hilling.

Tip. If you are expecting a rain before the weeds you cultivate want have time to die. You need to wait until you have a stretch of dry weather. So the weeds die. If you cultivate, and it rains. The weeds will re root!

I purchased my hoes 4-5 years ago and have used them extensively. Like all things mechanical it needs some refinements. From the many videos of row by row I’ve viewed Greg appears to be very mechanical minded with an abundance of common scene. That’s two attributes many are lacking. I would love to see the planet jr design refined to make it hardier and simpler. The 19 century hardwood handles need to go and be replaced with something that don’t require as much maintenance. Maybe EMT conduit. The way the handles adjust needs to be simpler. The wheel axles need to be more durable. They wear out if you push it in these Carolina clay soils. All in all Greg and Travis have definitely got the hoe market cornered. My family began with a Allis Chalmer B and C. We now have a fleet of John Deere. With that statement I mean all things over time need refinements that make their purpose simpler. I’m not an armchair quarterback, I’ve used about everything you sell and find it good. Thanks.

Should it be helpful to add a grease zerk to the axel?
@1982MCI3 жыл бұрын
Not really needed Leslie. It’s not turning fast enough to generate the friction or heat requires to wear any of it out in this lifetime and actually in my opinion, if you add grease anywheres on this machine then you actually do more harm than good cause the grease will attract dirt and sand and could actually act as a slow turning grinding wheel and actually start wearing it out defeating the purpose of adding the zerk
