I am thrilled that the Algonquian Squash made the list of your top five! Thank you for the feedback -- and for being willing to take a blind "leap of faith"! My Algonquian crop was harvested 10/9/2019 because we were predicted to get a hard freeze that night. The fruits were stored in a cool, dry, dark location for the winter. They finished turning orange while in storage. The Algonquian stored without any problems from October to mid-March. By April, the first few were starting to go bad so I made sure they got processed -- soup and pie. Four plants produced a boatload of fruits...which is why I was able to send you so many seeds. Enjoy! Best wishes from Kate In Olympia, WA -- 6/18/2020.

I like the flavor of Algonquian squash as soup or pie; let's just hope they do, too! How something "tastes" is very subjective. For example: A lot of people enjoy Okra. (Bleh). I am NOT one of them! 🤢 I just hope the Algonquian appeals to them as much as it appeals to me! Kate.

My winners this summer have been: Burgess Buttercup winter squash, Sweet Dumpling Delicata squash and Sungold tomato. I planted one hill of the Burgess Buttercup and probably have 30-40 fruit on a vine that’s about 60’ long. It’s growing about a foot every day with no signs of stopping. The Sweet Dumpling isn’t quite as productive but it’s compact and should produce about 20 fruit. You said it all on the Sungold tomato, very productive, very little blossom drop and very high quality fruit.

Hoss Tools The tasting reviews are all positive, sweet, dense and not stringy. I harvested a few small ones because I just couldn’t wait. I’ve never seen anything grow this fast and produce as much fruit. I thought Waltham butternut was productive but this one is amazing. The seeds I get from you guys are top notch, excellent germination rates and strong, healthy plants.

We dealt with the critter problem this week after Mrs. Deer decided to start eating on the squash and cucumber plants. We fenced in the whole garden and allowed for a path around it. I had to take fence and create found cages with chicken wire caps to keep them safe. Now the deer just keeps walking around all of it trying to figure out how to get in. Im trying to figure out how I could or if I should use cover crops. I don’t do any tilling. How would I go about working it into my soil? Should I add the cover crop to my compost, let it decompose then add it to the garden beds the next year?

Of the seeds I've purchased from Hoss, scarlett emperor pole bean grew very well so many additional vines. Some plants had 4-5 extra vines. To hot here in 9b and no fruit set, so..I pulled em and moving on to an order I just placed with some rattlesnake beans. Have another 3 months of 95+ might as well have something growing. Peaches n cream sweet corn is doing okay..after the central stalks got fried early on they put out some tillars. Each ear and tassel has its own tiller. -shrug- 50 plants of P&C half have tasseled out and a few ears showing 2 days ago. Theyve hit 4-5ft and maybe they'll do something after all. (I have been hitting em with fertilizer and extra water to push em) halo canary and dewlictable succumbed to ..something.. strong seedings and 2 weeks after transplant (6in) outside they just folded over. Opened em up and no noticeable stem issues. Roots seemed a little..dainty. going to direct seed and see how they go. 8 ball finally put out a female flower. Interested to see if the micronutrients fertilizer can help push some plants through the summer heat. Temptress sweet corn got hit with same heat the peaches n cream did but were 3 weeks younger and seem to be okay. I'm pushing them right along. More leaves..cooler soil. Procut red sunflowers doing well. The stalks are uncomfortably thin at about 12inches. Hopefully they grow into their britches. American giant sunflower still midgets but healthy. Planted a piccolino cucumber...3 plants (2ft high) and 0 male flowers. About a dozen females. Ought to be interesting if I can pollinate em with the armenian males.

Are the guinea nest onions the same as walking or top setting onions? I’ve been growing walking onions since last year and they’re a great perennial onion!

No, these are different from the "Egyptian Walking Onions" to which I believe you're referring.

I was wondering why when you put the grape leaves in your pickles and Greg said it was too salty for him I just want you to know I looked in my encyclopedia of herbs and other ways to preserve I read about grape leaves when put into brine they will make the brine saltier and it says to ease up the amount of salt that you put in the brine by following the recipe if it's 1 tbsp your recipe say to use back off to it maybe a quarter or even half at the thought and I hope you are using canning salt so I thought I would just relay this information to you if you're going to use grape leaves for crispy pickles back off on your salt from your recipe as usual great show 5 thumbs up

Haven't ever had any issues. They spray with planes mostly and use some kind of thickening/sticking agent which drops it pretty accurately where they want it -- and not near my garden.

Travis, you grow "sweet" corn and Greg is growing "field" corn. What's the difference? I've always eaten sweet corn. Is field corn something I should try to grow?
@gardeningwithhoss

Field corn is mainly used for making grits, cornmeal, or livestock feed. However, you can eat it fresh as roasting ears and it's pretty good!

As far as I know, there is only one "Sun Gold." Sunray must be a different variety. Although some seed companies do like to be sneaky and rename varieties to make you think it is something different.

I have a new puppy who loves to roll and chew on all my plants including the lavender. Are there any vegetable leaves that are poisonous to a pup that I should be worried about? Also, I had a Maine Coon cat and he would chase off the raccoons no problem! Just depends on the cat I suppose 😁

@@gardeningwithhoss Update: our pup ate some sweet potato vine and turns out it is very poisonous. Luckily he only had some lethargy and a little dehydration but just thought I would update to spread the word. I would caution anyone who has a mouthy puppy to keep him out the garden until he listens well enough to leave all the plants alone.

When you were talking about sweet potatoes you mentioned a pin tater. What is a pin tater?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
The sweet potato vines will extend from the main row and pin themselves to the ground, rerooting the plant. This secondary rooting will produce sweet potatoes often times. They're not as big, but just as good!
