Isn't it sad how so many depend on the stores for all of their goods and truly have no clue what a treat homegrown produce is! Almost any fruit or veggie grown at home is so much better in taste than those from stores! Growing up we had plums, apples, all the veggies you can think of, peaches, grapes and all taste so much better than any from stores. I remember the golden delicious apple tasting tropical and the warm plums from the tree so sweet and soft, the peas straight from the garden was as sweet as fruit! As a society we need to get back to what's natural and to what could sustain us at a lower price.

I’ve made homemade pasta sauce for the past 3 years with tomatoes, peppers, and zucchini from my garden 🪴. I cut the tomatoes in half, squeeze the seeds out, and roast them in the oven until the skins turn almost black. Add some onions, zucchini, and peppers to the tray and immerse blend it (after discarding the skins). It is absolutely amazing and great to have a starter to dinner throughout the year!

As kids we grew up out in the country here on CA’s central coast, barefoot and eating fresh, ripe tomato’s off the vine. There is nothing in the world that compares to it. I was a teenager before I knew people put bacon on a tomato sandwich! I’m a Master Gardener now and I love learning new things about a lot of things but mostly gardening, specifically tomatoes. You gentlemen have such a nice way of explaining the pros and cons in an easy manner for all to understand. I took a lot of helpful notes on this tomato tasting show. The Q&A was also very educational. I learned a a couple of things about tomato blight that I didn’t know. I appreciate the organic methods and products to remedy or enrich our food crops instead of chemically based solutions as well as preventive measures to take off season. That’s so important. I also try to impart those methods of healthy gardening. The TTT ( tomato taste testing) was fun to watch, waiting...”Is he gonna like it or not?”lol I definitely will be looking for “Red Snapper” and “Black Krim” seed to plant in my 2022 garden. Looking forward to watching your shows! I appreciate you, gentlemen. Thank you so much.

Ho Ho Ho you are right, most people do not eat right out of the garden. Now that is true wealth !

Great episode guys! Those tomatoes were absolutely GORGEOUS! I'm in 7b and due to LOTS of rain this spring, a few if my tomatoes are just now starting to turn pink. I have 2 tomato questions for you: 1. When do you stop fertilizing tomatoes? I have not fertilized since my Bella Rosas had green ones about ping-pong size. 2. What is your opinion on using diluted hydrogen peroxide spray followed by a baking soda solution spray the next day as a treatment and/or prevention for fungus and blight on tomatoes? I'm really looking forward to growing Red Snappers next season!!

I grew my tomatoes in two different styles this year. I grew 11 tomato plants in Dutch buckets using masterblend water soluble fertilizer. They were fed 3 times every 24 hours for a 30 minute duration. I grew 25 tomatoes in a large raised bed using your blue 20-20-20 and microboost with the injector and drip every two weeks. The soil was very good to start with. Both styles grew to the same height. The Dutch buckets set fruit earlier and the harvest is much larger. I thought the taste might be different but it was not. The Bella Rosas did well but the big beef was by far the best producers. The Cherokee purple did not produce like the hybrids but one plant had twelve tomatoes. The sun gold and sweet one hundred cherry style exploded in both gardens. I put a horizontal cattle panel (7' high)on top of my vertical support and the indeterminants are still growing. The dutch buckets were actually easier to care for and produced more. You do need electricity for the pump. You should experiment with these. The big beef produced so well. Have you grew these before?

Last season, I decide to grow in raised beds. Bella Rosa and Summer Pick were my main Crop Tomatoes. Fruits were, Large, Deep Red, Very Productive and Delicious! Plants stayed healthy until the last few weeks of the season. Summer heat & humidity didn't faze them. They produced from July into September. All in all, they did great here in SC Upstate. I was contemplating growing Red Snapper this season but decided to wait till next year. After your Critique. Im sorry I didnt plant any this year or last. Kellogg were a pleasant surprise for me. Delicious, Very Large Fruits weighing a lb or more. Terrific when sliced thick for a Bacon and Tomato Sandwich or just sliced and eaten fresh with mayo, salt and pepper. They did succumb to disease & some fruit rot, but I still managed a decent crop of Beautiful Bright Orange Tomatoes. I was impressed with the Flavor and meatiness of Kellogg Tomato. I'm Growing them again this season. Genuwine Tomato was very tasty, but the Fruits were all different sizes and shapes. Many catface. Not the best-looking fruits but somewhat productive. I not growing them this year, but I may in the future. Jubilee did not fare very well. Low productivity, small plants & fruit. The few fruits I did get were tasty but Im switching over to Lemon Boy Plus this year. Mrs. Maxwell Italian Tomato was a disaster. I only had two plants that grew 6-7 feet tall but produced only 6 or 7 Tomatoes combined. Small 3-4 oz fruit. Nice taste but I not worth the effort. I owe a lot of my recent success to Hoss. I purchased a Seed Starting Grow Light Kit and it's made a big difference in starting and maintaining my Tomatoes & A thumbs up to Hoss pelleted Seeds!

These are drilling holes into every peach that reaches golf ball size, and my other peaches are not growing any bigger than a pointed 1 inch bud. I think these bugs are compromising the overall health of fruit production even though the foliage is dark green and overall looks pretty good but something is chewing holes in that too.

Anyone can grow tomato's.....in a yard (instead of damn grass), in a pot,etc.Those you get in the store are picked green and shipped to various states and Mexico. Nothing better than right off the vine.

Made a mistake planting a full row of National Pickling cucumbers with hortonova trellis. They have just started putting on and I had enough small cucumbers to can 16 pints of bread and butter pickles today. I’m gonna have SO many more cukes than I possibly know what to do with! Even after I make sweet pickles and kosher Dills for friends and family.

Did you guys ever think about adding a wish list to your web site. Almost every show you mention something I might want, but don't want to buy right away. I guess I should make a note of it, but I never do. So, a wish list would really help. Good show.

I never cared for tomatoes till I ate a homegrown one. Store bought ones are bland, mushy. This year I'm growing Aunt Ruby's German green, Alice's Dream and Rosso Sicilian. Rosso Sicilian are very prolific growers, Aunt Ruby's only produce 2-3 per plant as do the Alice's Dream. Happy gardening guys.

Kelli Kuhr Don’t water in the evening, wet leaves during the night promotes disease and mildew
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
We water mostly through drip, so the timing really doesn't matter in that case because we're not wetting the leaves. If you're overhead watering, you'll want to do that in the mornings or afternoons (but give enough time for the plant leaves to dry before dark).

Interesting. We didn't have any splits on those varieties. Not sure what could have caused it if it wasn't from too much water.

As a second part to my question about anthracnose, Travis, you said you were growing your tomatoes like Greg this year and not pruning to see if they were healthier. What was your verdict? Most of mine in the garden have something or another but I have some volunteers not pruned in the yard that are healthy as can be.

When it comes to seeds, what does Palleted mean? I saw them mentioned when I was looking at the seeds on your sight and you mentioned you would have the seeds palletized for next year. What is that in reference to?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
Pelleted seeds are coated with clay, which makes them round and easier to handle. It just makes it so much easier to plant the seeds in trays when starting them.

There is a tomato grown in Lancaster County Pa., specifically in Washington Boro, Pa., that is the most delicious tomato you will ever eat. It's called "Jet Star" and it's amazing. The reason more people don't know about it is because it is a soft tomato and therefore it doesn't ship well. All I can say is if you're ever in Lancaster County during the summer months, find a place that sells them and you will find it it to be the sweetest and best tasting tomato you ever ate.
@gardeningwithhoss

I've heard of it. It's an older hybrid variety. Seems like a couple KZbinrs grew it last year and made it seem like it was the best hybrid tomato ever. I've asked my tomato breeders about it and they said it doesn't hold a candle to the modern-day hybrids. I'd have to grow it myself to confirm that, but just what I've been told by the "experts."
