I agree. They lost fine men in the Soviet Union. General Colin Powell was assigned to lead 60,000 troops to help the Soviet Union RECOVER. He was making friends with leaders. Reagan and Bush obviously resented that; they wanted war, faked their need for cold war! Tearing down the wall wasn't necessary but a deviation from war! Colin Powell was assigned to the White House as NSA! They wanted more control over their war tactics!

Excellent film with the 2 late great actors Rutger Hauer, Max Von Sydow & Martin Sheen in their commands & a great supporting cast ! Great moments of tension around minutes 12 to 15 where the suspense & expressions of Sheen's eyes darting left to right in caution saying "Where the hell is he"? before the subs scrape together are great, subtle touches of drama. Thank you for sharing this !

Lots of tension for tension junkies, especially during the fire, on the Soviet Sub. My major plot complaint: both sub commanders knew that the Soviet sub was performing a "Crazy Ivan" maneuver, yet neither did what was necessary, to avoid a collision.

This movie is outstanding and brings to life the threat of nuclear energy. I was in the Army at the tail end of the Cuban Missile Crisis and was part of the detachment in south Florida manning our own nuclear missiles. To this day I experience bouts of PTSD knowing that we came so very close to annihilating Cuba and every living soul there. Thinking that while battling the mosquitoes and snakes in the Everglades we were also ensuring our missiles were war ready to most likely begin a war that would end civilization. I have nightmares about those times and feel an immense guilt that I was part of an effort to potentially kill millions of people. Even today I weep.

Ok movie. Many unrealistic enactments. Engines don’t engage with levers. They are steam turbines operated by throttle valves. Our attack boats especially LA class didn’t have O 6 ( full captain) as their CO’s. Always Commanders. Sheen did not behave or sound like the sub skippers I had. Hunt for Red October (with exception of the made up propulsion system on the Typhoon) was a much more accurate and representative version of the Cold War submarine hunt and chase game played.

Amazing....this film reminds me of the time I took a cruise vacation with my then lover MarcEnder. We had an amazing time and we had often dinner with and lots of margaritas with the Captain who made quite a few enemies as he revealed to us and other passengers some of the crew’s secrets. Tragedy strikes one afternoon when they saw him in the water, and accusations flew as to who could have thrown him overboard. Was he thrown or was it an accident? The coast guard was involved and than we MarcEnder and I decided to end our vacation and we took the first available flight back to Boston from the Island of Martinique. We kept thinking about the Captain was it really an accident or a pay back. It was all very traumatic for the passengers but also for the crew Guess we will never know the truth of what really happened to Captain to Captain Dinovac.

Sorry, no, a fire will not launch a missile. The fuel for all sub launched missiles is solid, not liquid. If by some miracle a missile got hot enough to 'cook off' it would vent through both the upper and lower hatches. It might heave the upper stages a few hundred feet into the air but no further. At least the screenwriter had a lively imagination.

'Hostile Waters' is one of many sub movies that are widely underappreciated, mostly because they never had a theatrical release, so most people don't even know they exist. If you are a fan of the genre, here are three recommendations to put in your queue. They wanted to tow the sub to a berth for repairs because then the incident would become public and Americans would have backed out of the Rejkavik (sp?) summit. The Russian commander sank it to cover it up the incident long enough to allow the summit to proceed.

This film is an historical oddity. It's set when there is still an USSR but I can't believe that it was made before 1989. Even 1992 would be pushing it. But it's a fine film nonetheless.

"The United States government denies the accident occurred"... and so does the real Captain Britanov. (He in fact sued Warner Brothers because he believed this movie made him look incompetent, and got about a hundred grand in the settlement. Although apparently he had no problem being portrayed by Rutger Hauer, is the rumor.) Yes, there was an explosion and a fire on the K-219; it had happened before, one of her missile tubes was fused shut because of a very similar accident. The ship was also 15 years old and not well-maintained; this was the Soviet Union just getting out of the "Era of Stagnation", after all. But the U.S. Navy says there was no collision, and Captain Britanov says there was no collision. The Russian government, on the other hand...
@Electricfox
@Electricfox Ай бұрын
I must admit that's something I've never understood, I don't think this film made Britanov look incompetent at all, quite the opposite. I can understand if it was over the collision, but the Britanov in this film does everything he can to save the crew and his boat, he is the model of a good submarine captain and Hauer does him proud. I guess it's a cultural thing.

This movie shows that the K219 was having leakage issues in the missile bays, before contact with the American sub. Yes, the collision may have exacerbated the leak. But the fact that the leak was already an issue, cannot be ignored in favor of the 'blame game.' The K219 is now a legend in the annals of naval history. Many men were never celebrated, for acts of valor, bravery, and selfless courage, we as Americans would never have attributed to the Russians during the cold war. Nor their own government. We were busy on both sides as seeing one another as the "enemy." forgetting such notions as 'humanity.' The K219 was a loss for Russia. And it was a real test of both sides, in the face of a potential nuclear war. Good people die, as governments deny... But isn't that way?

@@jaydefuca4153 What? One sub following another is a common tactic on both sides. All sides. All countries with the capability, shadow one another, when they can find one another, beneath the surface. It's how they collect information on the sub they follow. If you watched the video, the collision occurred when the Russian sub went into reverse suddenly and the American sub could not respond in time to miss it. Even so, the Russian sub was not so damaged they could not surface. They did just that! It was the fires inside that made them try to partially flood the sub and extinguish the fire. "A fire that started with the mixture of rocket fuel and sea water... An explosive mixture in any situation." Neither sub was so damaged by the collision, that they could no longer function. There is no arrogance in that. If insulting people is all you have, then don't get on the internet... But because of the collision, all nations with submarines at that time, agreed to stop the shadowing of each other's subs, to limit any further collisions. But who believes that it no longer goes on?

What is... "common" doesn't mean it is right, neither means it is correct according to maritime law (which certainly you are totally unaware even of its basics...). Do you know how many nautical miles a country can claim as territorial waters and how many miles does your country recognize as legit@@jameslanning8405? When you find out, you have the answer on why he was following SO CLOSE.

This was a fun movie, I enjoyed it. Technically, I think it was awful. First, it is a very detailed process to launch a nuclear missile. If there were a fire in their missile compartment it is much more likely that one of them would have exploded and destroyed the ship. Second, the only way to shut down their reactors was to enter the reactor compartment and operate a hand crank? The Soviets weren't known for their fine safety programs, but they were not that stupid. How would they have performed routine reactor startups, shut downs, and normal operations? It is more likely that a guy on a control panel could instantly shut down the reactor with the flick of a switch.

They did try to shut down the reactors after they couldnt contain the fires.. the problem is that the reactor controls were in a room next to the command center at the other side of the missile compartment wich was on fire.. and the fire destroyed the reactor controls ..so they had to shut down they by hand.. the problem here was that there was also a fire in the reactor compartment making condictions horrible for those shutting down them by hand.. In reality the reactors were not going criticial or overheating but there was no way they would leave them running in a burning room in an out of control sub so they had to shut them down yes or yes.. the end result was the same..Sergei Preminin died after he shut them down and was unable to leave the compartment

The initial missile tube explosion killed 2 sailors and damaged the reactor controls. Safety systems should have automatically SCRAM'ed the reactor when the explosion happened, but that failed in the explosion. That is the reason the reactor had to be shut down by hand. In reality, doing so was a death sentence for the reactor crew because their protective gear was insufficient for that level of exposure. Preminin would have known he was a dead man before he went into the reactor compartment. As it happens, this is the only part of the story that is really accurate. USS Augusta (not Aurora) never collided with the Russians. The captains of both subs agree on this point. The fire and explosions were caused by a leaking missile tube hatch. The seawater combined with the missile fuel to ignite the fire. K-219 already had one missile tube welded shut due to a similar accident previously occurring. A large percentage of the tension and drama in this movie has no basis in real life. I was quite disappointed at how far departed from reality this really is.

Why did Admiral Quinn keep calling Lieutenant COMMANDER Curtis "Lieutenant"? The proper designation is "Commander" even though she was a Lieutenant Commander.

What the military also won’t admit to, is a whole bunch of US navy ships sailed right over that Russian submarine, and never knew it! I know, as a Marine, I was on the USS Inchon with the Nimitz and a couple more, all heading to Norway for operation Northern Wedding Bold Guard. I never knew about this event until years later.
